Showing Eden Cottage Yarns

Hi folks! How is it nearly August??? I always find that summer is a great time to make socks, wouldn’t you agree?! They are quick, portable, lightweight and always useful! So with that in mind I have some sock-related news for you.

Vikki Bird’s fundraising Seed Head sock pattern is now published. Until 14th August 2020, £2 from the purchase of this pattern will go towards The Flower Power Fund (for Marie Curie UK). You can buy the pattern on Payhip and LoveCrafts. We have an update coming next week of the yarn that Vikki used – Tempo 4ply. This is our PROPER sock yarn – by that I mean it’s a nice tough Merino (more coarse than in our other yarns, but still soft) with nylon added. It’s incredibly hard wearing in my experience (I have socks in it that I’ve been wearing a LOT for nine years now!!). The update goes live on Tuesday the 28th of July at 7pm UK time.

On the subject of Marie Curie, our Flower Power yarn raised a grand total of £1667!! So thank you ever so much to everyone who bought some – and I have to give another big shout out of thanks to YarnUndyed for donating the yarn. This is the kind of awesome thing that can happen when people work together. ????

Going back to socks… we still have a great selection of sock yarn from the latest update. Brimham High Twist is perfect for socks as it is machine washable and hard wearing. If you like your socks with a bit more interest, why not pair a skein with a contrasting mini skein? They’re also available in Brimham High Twist as well as other bases, including sparkly silver Nateby 4ply and sparkly gold Rosedale 4ply. There is also a good selection of Harewood Fingering still available from our last update so you should find plenty in stock for any project.

For the crocheters we have stocked the latest book from The Crochet Project! The Shawl Project Book 5 features five designs using laceweight yarns and we are totally in love with it! Each design has a different construction method with a combination of join as you go, granny stripes and more! We have a new post on the blog introducing you to all the designs and providing our suggestions for which of our yarns you could use. Our Titus Lace, which would be the perfect pairing with this book, is out of stock but we have plans for another update very soon. We will let you know when that will be as soon as we can!

Next up, a little bit of housekeeping. There is a new episode of The Wholly Irregular ECY Shedcast on the Eden Cottage Yarns YouTube channel and it has captions! (We are working to add captions to all episodes so please do bear with us!) This one is a nice quick one showing you the yarn for the update after next which will be a singles special — featuring Keld Fingering and Coniston Fingering. In the Shedcast I say that the update will be on 28th July but that is the Tempo update (OOPS!). Keld Fingering and Coniston Fingering, which are both fingering weight merino singles blends, will be coming on 7th August!

Other future updates in the plan include Hayton DK, Titus Lace and a Summer Stash Box!

We ship worldwide but have recently had to increase shipping charges to the US due to increases in the costs to us. Our free shipping offer has ended but we have replaced it with a 10% discount to orders with a pre-tax value of over £100. The discount only applies to products purchased and not to the shipping charges. To take advantage of this offer enter the code 100THANKS during checkout.

Plenty of news coming from ECY Shedquarters this time! First up is news of a new yarn for our next update…

Actually, there are two yarns as it comes in both fingering weight and DK weight. I’ve named it Keswick Fingering and Keswick DK (the w is silent so it is pronounced Kez-ick!!), and it is an 85% Superwash Merino base with 15% Donegal neps mixed in. The neps are made of polyamide as it’s soft and doesn’t take dye, so that means the neps are always visible. Obviously when I’ve dyed lighter shades you can see the darker coloured neps more, and on darker dyed shades you can see the lighter coloured neps more. That’s added to my dyeing fun, I have to say!

I’ve been swatching these in both crochet and knitting, and I’ve absolutely loved working with both. The 4ply is a high twist and the DK is normal twist, and for both I’ve found that at a tighter tension you get a really nice firm fabric (although still soft enough for next-to-skin wear), and as the tension gets more loose the yarn starts to soften and drape more.

I’d recommend both for a wide variety of projects – I’ve had a nosey at other companies’ versions of the fingering weight just to check on whether people are making socks with it and they are, so although I haven’t tried it yet myself (I will do!) I feel confident in saying you could make socks with it. I can’t feel the neps against the texture of the yarn, so although you can see them they don’t really interfere with the knitting or crocheting process.

I will be releasing a Shedcast all about them shortly, so most importantly… the updates goes live on Saturday the 11th of July at 5pm UK time.

There’s still lots of beautiful yarn from our last update too, so that’s all ready and waiting! There’s Bowland DK, our classic BFL – this is a pretty woolly yarn, but it’s soft and hard wearing. I’ve got garments that I made in it in 2011-2012 which still look new (honestly)! There’s also the brand new sparkly Silverdale DK! The sparkle is fairly subtle which I think is nice – it just catches the light. The yarn is soft, smooth, and satisfyingly solid, somehow! It’s very easy to crochet or knit with. I’ll be doing a blog post about it as soon as I get chance so there’ll be more info coming soon.

I’ve been meaning to make up more yarn packs for ages but kept forgetting! Stephen West’s latest pattern releases reminded me, though! I’ve put together yarn packs in both 4ply/fingering weight, and DK weight, and with varying quantities. So some are just 3 x 100g skeins, and they go up to 6 x 100g skeins for the biggest one. I can always make more or bigger ones though. ????
They’re great for all sorts of projects – we first did them for things like Skimming Stones, and Starting Point. There’s often only one or two of each for the hand dyed ones so they are quite unique! To make things easier to find we have renamed packs we made for previous patterns, such as Fading Point and What the Fade?! These are all now five-colour or six-colour 4ply/fingering weight yarn packs.

Another option for multi-coloured projects where you only need a little bit of a handful of colours would be to get your hands on a lucky dip of five DK Yarnlings™. DK Yarnlings™ aren’t new to ECY but they haven’t been available on the website for a while. They now come in the same glassine bags that the 4ply Yarnling™ lucky dip comes in. They work perfectly in the original DK version of Quadratic by David O’Kelly.

We’ve put the aran and chunky for the Cat Knits projects on sale to clear at 20% off! So that’s Bowland Aran, Pendle Aran, and Pendle Chunky. The associated kits for these yarns from Cat Knits are discounted with 15% off, too. There’s no code needed and the discounted price shows on the website I’m keen to make room for a whole load of incoming new yarns so now feels like the right time to do this!

It has been a while since we shared a plan for future updates, partly because it has been impossible to plan that far ahead! But as we settle into the new normal we are able to look a bit further ahead so this is what is in progress:

Brimham High Twist and the return of Harewood Fingering (also a high twist yarn) – update penciled in for 19th July
Keld Fingering – This was so popular it nearly all sold out in the first day and so as soon as we could get our hands on it again (yarn supply has been impacted by COVID-19) we did. It is in the dyepots and we are hoping to have the update go live towards the end of the month!
Coniston Fingering and Hayton DK updates are in the planning stages so will likely be in August.

Our free shipping offer ended on 30th June 2020 to correspond with regrettable but necessary increases to costs associated with shipping to the US. There is a blog post with more information about this on our website. The offer has been replaced with a 10% discount to orders with a pre-tax value of over £100, excluding shipping costs which are calculated separately. The code 100THANKS is active now and can be used in place of the existing codes ahead of the changeover.

You can still only use one discount code/offer per order but the new code can be used on orders of ANY size!

Our next update will be on Friday 12th June at 8 p.m. UK time. This update will be the beautiful Hayton DK and Bowland 4ply so we have a great combination of British bluefaced leicester in the Bowland, and Merino, cashmere, and nylon in the Hayton. Both are gorgeous yarns but in totally different ways! If you want to know more about the differences between the fibres of the two breeds check out our blog post on the subject. Hayton DK is soft, squishy, and cosy.. whilst Bowland 4ply is much more woolly, soft in a different way, and has a sort of light drape to it. If you’ve got really sensitive skin then something like Hayton DK will suit you better than the BFL yarns. I’ve done larger batches of the DK (as usual!) so that you can get sweater quantities if you wish, and there are lots of semi-solid colourways so that you can do things like lace and textures without losing the stitch pattern amongst lots of colours. There are variegated colourways too though, of course! Also worth noting is that Snow Leopard is back! It sold out in minutes last time so I thought I’d best make some more for those who missed out. ❤️

While planning our Bowland 4ply update Laura reminded me about the Royal Mile shawl by Justyna Lorkowska aka Lete’s Knits. We released this as a collaboration at Edinburgh Yarn Festival 2017. It uses two skeins of Bowland 4ply and you can play around with the colours to really personalise it. The sample below is made using two balls each of Milburn 4ply in Althaea and Natural. We have copies of the pattern available on the website and we also have add-on kits. Add-on kits let you choose the yarns and colours you want for your kit and we package them up with the pattern, a project bag and a sachet of soak. Simply add the yarns and the add-on kit to your basket and we’ll do the rest. Check out the Kits section of the website to find all available add-on kits — there are loooooads!

Monday 25th May is a public holiday for us, so at ECY Shedquarters and we are taking the opportunity to have a few days of downtime. This means we will be closed Friday 22nd through to Tuesday 26th May. You will still be able to place orders during this period, but they will not be processed until after we get back to work on Wednesday 27th May. Emails will also be off during that time and we will start checking them and replying from Wednesday.

Boring admin out of the way! Now I can tell you about our next update which is coming on Monday 25th May at 1pm UK time. We have had a few requests recently for laceweight yarns (2ply) and considering we have very little of it left on the website, we decided it was time for an update of Titus Lace (Merino/silk) and Askham Lace (baby alpaca/silk). We have a great selection of colourways for you and are sure you will find the perfect skein for your next laceweight project so set your alarms to be sure to get your hands on it!

In case you missed our last few updates, you have definitely not missed out. There is still plenty to choose from on the following bases: Brimham High Twist (full and mini skeins), a great all rounder with fantastic stitch definition; Coniston Fingering, our luxurious blend of extra fine Merino and Superkid mohair giving a sumptuous fuzzy halo; and Rosedale 4ply (full and mini skeins), our fab new gold sparkle yarn! Check out the Latest Update category on our homepage to find all these yarns and more!

While we are closed you might be interested to take a look at The Wholly Irregular ECY Shedcast on YouTube. I (Victoria) have filmed a few episodes now talking through various things like the colourways in our updates, suggestions for combining colours and whatever else comes to mind at the time! If you search for Eden Cottage Yarns you will find the channel. I hope you like it!

We also still have a pre-order open for our yarn raising money for Stonewall, a UK charity supporting the LBGT community. This exclusive colourway, Trans Rights are Human Rights, was created as part of the Operation: Social Justice initiative started by Angie of GamerCrafting, and we have already donated £200 from sales of our first batch of it. 20% of the purchase price of this yarn will be donated to Stonewall to help them campaign and educate around the subject of equal rights for the LGBT community as well as to support and empower members of the community. Our next donation will be sent at the end of the month so get your orders in before then.

We are still shipping to most countries worldwide but please do be aware that it may take quite a bit longer die to the global coronavirus situation. For more information check out our Shipping Info page.

Long before the lockdown, we started planning for two brand new yarns to add to the ECY stable (actually there are more, but these are the first two!). Rosedale 4ply, a new gold sparkle 4-ply yarn is coming later in April. But first we have Lowther Lace which is coming to the website on Sunday 12th April at 5 p.m. UK time. To see the colourways that will be going live on the website on Sunday you can find an album of these over on flickr.

Lowther Lace is a sumptuous blend of baby suri alpaca and mulberry silk. The alpaca fibre gives this yarn a wonderful cloud-like fuzzy halo and offers a great alternative to mohair. This yarn is ideal for using on its own in both knitting and crochet and can also be held double with other yarns to add a wonderful soft, fuzzy halo. It does not have great stitch definition due to the fuzziness of the fluff so complex lace patterns might get lost in it.

I have recorded a YouTube video about this yarn – I did lots of swatching and stuff so that’s all included. It’s just gone online, so you can view it on the Eden Cottage Yarns YouTube channel. This will be followed up with a blog post with some pattern inspiration and lots of other information about the yarn.

Also over on YouTube you can still find the video recorded going through all the designs in Cat Knits by Marna Gilligan, discussing the techniques, yarns used and possible alternatives. If you missed that, or prefer to read through information in a leisurely fashion, we have also published a blog post with all the same information plus a few extra bits which you can find on the home page on the website. Yarn packs are still available for all designs in the book along with project bags, pin badges and copies of the book, all of which you can find from the home page of the website.

PLEASE NOTE: This Friday and Monday are bank holidays and as such we will be closed. I know it won’t make a difference to a lot of people at the moment but in all honesty I am knackered and ready for a four day break! I’m setting up auto-posts for social media in case I am not online over the weekend, but I’m sure I’ll dip in to the ECY Garden FB group now and then. If you have any questions that’s probably the best place to post them, as the community is very lovely and helpful. I will be back on Tuesday, full of the joys of spring. ????

I wouldn’t normally go for the “Keep calm and…” trope but on this occasion it does fit in perfectly here, I’m afraid! I do hope that wherever you are and whatever your situation, you are staying safe and well. It’s such a weird time, isn’t it — being cheerful and talking about lovely new things seems a bit off, but at the same time being negative is hardly helpful either.

ECY is still going — Laura works from her bat cave at home in Cambridgeshire anyway, and obviously I work from home anyway too, I just now don’t have any physical help. I called our post office this week to ask how they feel about me continuing to send post (David drops it off on his way to work and he’s still working full time, so it’s no extra travel) — they asked me to please keep sending post over as often as I can (I did ask if it would help to bring it in on fewer days per week), as they are a small self-employed business and really need to keep afloat for as long as possible — and I am their biggest customer. So I’m still sending post at the moment — obviously if that changes I will let you know. It will take longer for me to dispatch orders though now as I’m packing them in between dyeing, processing yarn, photographing said yarn, and doing all my usual social media and stuff. Again, if anything changes I will let you know!

With all that out of the way I wanted to tell you that we have a VERY exciting update happening on Saturday at 8 a.m. UK time! Now… we wouldn’t have planned to have a huge update right in the middle of a pandemic, especially not one that involves a lot of investment in yarn, merchandise, books, and so much time… but it’s been in the offing for 12 months and we couldn’t possibly have known what would happen!

This weekend sees the launch of Cat Knits by Marna Gilligan of ‘an caitin beag’ (she of sinister cat fame!). Cat Knits is a book of 16 knit designs all featuring Marna’s signature kitties on a mixture of garments and accessories. It’s a wide-ranging book actually — it feels like there’s more than 16 items in there. Each chapter covers a different yarn weight, so there’s a 4ply section, and DK section, an Aran section, and a Chunky section, all using our yarns. Each section has a garment AND matching accessories included, and they range from nice simple textures, to stranded colourwork (like sinister cats), to intarsia.

With everything that is going on globally, plans for the launch have changed many times over the past few weeks and may still change again, but the CURRENT plan (correct as of the time of writing!!) is that Marna, Laura and I will be going live online on Instagram at 2 p.m. UK time on Saturday. We really hope that you will join us as together we talk through each of the designs, the yarns required and other items that have been produced to accompany this fantastic book. If you can’t join us don’t worry — I think the video will be available for playback (I am a bit clueless about live streaming if I’m honest), and we will turn it into a blog post too for better accessibility.

In the update we will have:
– copies of the book
– yarn packs for each of the 16 designs in the book
– Eden Cottage Cats project bags
– some of Marna’s items (tote bags, stitchmarker sets and pin badges)
– plus our own exclusive Eden Cottage Cats enamel badge (due for delivery next week so we might have a slight delay on those).

There will also be a few additional colours of Pendle Chunky that can be used in place of Silver Birch for the Chunky chapter. We also have an option for you to buy all the merchandise with one click. The “very catty merch” bundles are limited so get in quick if you want to get hold of them!

Although this update has taken a large proportion of our focus that hasn’t impacted other yarns being added to the website. Only last week we added a selection of colourways in our alpaca/silk yarns Askham 4ply and Askham Aran.

When we heard about Operation: Social Justice, we felt we had to get involved as it is a great opportunity to spread the love with acts of random kindness. Our chosen charity is Stonewall, an organisation in the UK supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Our next update will be going live at 12 noon UK time on Sunday 15th March and will include a special one-off colourway “Trans Rights are Human Rights” on our Brimham HT base. We will also have pastel rainbow mini skein sets on the same base. 20% of the purchase price of these two products will go to Stonewall. There are a limited number of skeins of the one-off colourway but if they sell out we will open preorders for more.

Over the past few weeks we have been very busy adding yarn to the website, restocking some of our popular bases. On Friday 13th March we will add a few colourways of Bowland 4ply, our 100% British Bluefaced Leicester yarn. Last week we had a small sock yarn update featuring Tempo 4ply and Brimham 4ply in a selection of browns and neutrals. Before that was a bumper Hayton 4ply update, adding a great selection of variegated colourways and semisolids on one of our most popular bases, a blend or Merino, Cashmere and nylon. Prior to that we had Oakworth DK, our New Zealand Polwarth yarn, in a great selection of colourways. This yarn is a real workhorse and is great in a wide variety of projects including the free Follifoot Legwarmers pattern, which is available both or our website and on Ravelry.

Looking forward to next Friday we are very excited to announce that we have an alpaca-based update with both Askham 4ply and Askham Aran getting a much needed restock. Both of these yarns are a blend of baby alpaca with silk, making them super soft with a lovely shine.

Our next update is Oakworth 4ply and it will be live on the website on Friday 21st February at midday UK time! This is a big bumper update with plenty of colours to choose from and is in support of a special pattern release — read on for more information about this.

Oakworth 4ply is our New Zealand Polwarth yarn, if you want to read more about the incredible sheep it comes from we have a blog post about it on our website. This yarn is a bit underrated in my opinion – it’s soft, hardwearing, and has good stitch definition – so I am delighted for it to be featured, and I hope you’ll give it a try. ????

The Blossoming Sweater (which is absolutely gorgeous by the way!) by Rachel Illsley of Unwind Knitwear is being released on Friday and calls for Oakworth 4ply (funnily enough!). We will have plenty of stock in the original colours used by Rachel for the design – Driftwood and Briar Rose. However, I’ve also dyed a wide range of other semi-solid colourways so that you can play with your own colour combinations; PLUS there are a handful of lovely variegated colourways, just because. 🙂 Rachel is offering a 15% discount off the price of the pattern until Monday 24th February and there will be a KAL running for this design in the Unwind Knitwear group on Ravelry, too.

A few months back we launched an exciting new yarn, Coniston Fingering and we were blown away by how much everyone loved it. Not that this should have come as a surprise as the whole ECY team are besotted with it. Coniston Fingering is beautiful extra fine Merino with luxurious superkid mohair (the finest and softest fibres obtained from the first shearing) all lovingly spun into a singles yarn. We just love the combination of a single ply with a beautiful mohair halo. It is soft, fuzzy, drapey but with a little bounce too, and just a sheer delight to work with.

We just knew that as soon as possible we needed to have more on the website and so this Saturday at 3pm UK time we will have a great selection of our signature muted semi-solids alongside variegated colourways. There should be something for everyone! Head over to the home page of the website on Saturday to find all the lovely new yarn.

We do also have some colourways still available from our most recent update including Pendle Aran and Bowland DK, the DK is in sweater quantities! Plus we have kits available for the final pattern in the Four Seasons Collection, our incredible collaboration with Jayalakshmi of Apoorva Designs.

Happy February everyone! I am here with news of our next hand-dyed yarn update, which will be going live on Saturday 8th February at 5pm UK time. The update will include Bowland DK, Pendle Aran and the final installment of the Four Seasons Collection, our collaboration with Jayalakshmi of Apoorva Designs. Snowy Evening is the winter design, which is to be released on Saturday and it uses four skeins of Pendle Aran in colourway Oak. The update will include printed copies of the pattern, a limited number of the winter subscription boxes and add-on kits which allow you to choose your own yarn to be made into a kit. As the collection is now complete we also have a pattern bundle so that you can purchase all four patterns together at a discounted price.
