Tournament of Yarns

Do you like surprises? If so, the Tournament of Yarns is for you. It’s a mystery bag event where you can get yarn at a small discount and the possibility of a special prize as well. Here’s how this works.

I’ve put together 26 mystery bags, labeled by letter. Each one has a different price (from $15-$30). There will be a listing on my website for the Tournament, and you pick the letter(s) you want to purchase. I’ll send you the mystery bag I’ve assigned to that letter.

What’s Inside the Bags?
~ One skein of yarn. Usually this yarn will be an orphan skein (meaning the last of its dye lot), but one bag contains a limited-edition base. The price per bag is a discounted price for the skein inside (discounted anywhere from $2-$5).
~ Six bags will contain two skeins of yarn (same color from same dye lot) and priced as if a single discounted skein (so you get a discount plus a free skein)
~ One bag will contain a 50% off coupon code for your next purchase on the Round Table Yarns website or at an event where I’m a vendor
~ Two bags will contain a 25% off coupon code
~ Four bags will contain a 15% off coupon code
~ Six bags will contain a 10% off coupon code
~ Two bags will contain an enamel pin with the Round Table Yarns logo
~ One bag will contain a wooden needle sizer with the Round Table Yarns logo
~ 10 bags will contain a notepad and pen with the Round Table Yarns logo

Each bag will contain at least one of the above surprises. Some of the double skein bags may contain an additional surprise from the list.

Tournament Timeline
The Tournament of Yarn will begin on Friday, November 23 at 8 a.m. Central Time and will run through the end of the day on Monday, November 26 or when all 26 bags have sold (whichever comes first).

Shipping is free for all U.S. orders and free for international orders over $100.

We Knit in Texas Y’all Cowl Kit – Fundraiser for Unite for Bleeding Disorders

Karen Robinson of Round Table Yarns and Tim Stephens of Periodic Knits have teamed up to create a kit to raise money for the Unite for Bleeding Disorders Walk, which benefits the local Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the Texas Central Hemophilia Association. Tim’s 14-year-old stepson, Bryen, has severe hemophilia B (which affects less than 1% of all hemophilia B patients), and Tim and his family are walking as part of Team Awesomesauce. The money raised through the Unite for Bleeding Disorders Walk goes directly towards three categories: Registration for the Texas Bleeding Disorders Conference, Camp Ailihpomeh, and Education Events for Families.

Pattern: The kit contains a cowl pattern designed by Tim called We Knit in Texas Cowl. This cowl was inspired by the phrase “We knit in Texas, y’all” which has become a rallying cry for all Texas knitters. The ribbed pattern was created by taking the phrase “We knit in Texas, y’all” as written in binary code. Binary code is a wonderful language for knitters because just as binary code uses two characters (0 and 1) in varying combinations to express ideas, knitting also uses two main stitches (knit and purl) in varying combinations to design fabrics.

When the phrase “We knit in Texas, y’all” is translated into binary code, the resultant 0’s and 1’s can be transcribed as knits and purls, respectively, to produce an aesthetically pleasing cowl pattern. Combine this with yarn that has been dyed in Texas and you get a uniquely Texan item. As part of this kit purchase, you will receive a coupon code to download the PDF pattern on Ravelry.

Yarn: The kit includes one skein of yarn to make the cowl, in your choice of one of three colors: red, white or blue. How much more Texas can you get? The yarn is a new worsted weight base called Gareth. It is 100% Superwash Merino with 218 yards per 100g skein.

The kit is $26 and for each kit sold, $17 will be donated to the Texas Central Hemophilia Association on behalf of Team Awesomesauce.

Knight of the Lion Yarn Club

The latest yarn club for Round Table Yarns is now open to subscriptions! In the 5-month Knight of the Lion Yarn Club you’ll get the story of Yvain, who decides to avenge his cousin who has had a shameful experience with another knight. This adventure will change Yvain’s life forever, but not always in a positive way. He’ll find and lose love and go on a number of side quests, one of which earns him the name Knight of the Lion. What happens to him in the end? Will he be shamed like his cousin or will he have a happier ending? Find out by joining this yarn club and following along on Yvain’s adventures.

For five months, you’ll receive one shipment each month (five total shipments) of a special yarn club colorway based upon this story. The story has been split into five parts. Each month, you’ll receive part of the story on a postcard (or two) and a color of yarn based upon that part of the story. In at least one of the packages, you’ll receive an extra small gift. Each yarn color is a surprise that you’ll anticipate each month along with the next part of the story. The colors are exclusive to the yarn club for at least three months from the date of shipment. Colors will be semisolids/tonals.

You’ll also have the option of participating in a knit-along/crochet-along in the Round Table Yarns group on Ravelry, where you can chat with other yarn club members and be eligible to win prizes. In addition, you’ll receive a recommended list of pattern ideas (posted on Ravelry) for using your yarn club yarn.

Sign ups for the club will run from June 27 through July 9. However, the club may close early if all spots are filled.

Knight of the Lion Yarn Club Pre-Club

It’s time for the next yarn club from Round Table Yarns. Well, almost time. Before we begin, I’d like to invite you on a little pre-club adventure.

What Is a Pre-Club?
The story for the yarn club is based upon the tale of the Knight of the Lion. But before that knight’s story gets told, another knight, Sir Calogrenant, shares his own tale with those at Arthur’s court — a tale which is the catalyst for Yvain’s adventure into becoming the Knight of the Lion.

I’ve taken Sir Calogrenant’s story of his misadventure and created a special colorway for it. Because this part of the story comes before the main adventure, instead of having this color be part of the full club, I’m creating a special offer for it. You can order this color whether or not you plan to join the full club. It’s a taste of what a club shipment might be like without having to fully commit to the club.

Why Join the Pre-Club?
1. You love the color! (It’s not a surprise like the regular club will be.)
2. You love the base! (Also not a surprise.)
3. You can get a taste of what it is like to be part of the yarn club.
4. But you don’t have to commit to the full club if you join the pre-club.
5. If you do want to join the full club, you’ll get first access before it opens to everyone else.
6. You’ll find out why Calogrenant is so reluctant to tell his story to the other knights.
7. You won’t have to wait until the end of September for this color to be released outside the pre-club.

Featuring hand-dyed yarn inspired by the legends of King Arthur, Round Table Yarns is your yarn quest destination, where every color tells a story. Round Table Yarns will be releasing at least a dozen new self-striping colorways in the upcoming months. The first two, Courtly Love and The Underwater Bridge, are now available.

Courtly Love: Multifaceted, love covers a range of emotions, from a softer, more romantic type of love (pink) to a more passionate love (red). Inspired by Valentine’s Day, though not exclusive to the holiday, this two-stripe colorway is easy for you to fall in love with.

Announcing the new Abduction of Guenevere Yarn Club

Round Table Yarns has just opened a new yarn club. Sign-ups run through November 15. For yarn clubs, a specific story from the Arthurian legends is chosen as the inspiration, and with each yarn shipment, you receive part of the story. This club’s story is called the Abduction of Guenevere.

One day, Queen Guenevere takes a few knights with her on a pleasant horseback ride. But the ride quickly turns unpleasant when an evil knight comes along and abducts the queen! For this yarn club, you’ll receive part of the story each shipment, so you’ll find out who has kidnapped Guenevere and why through the end of the adventure. (What does Lancelot do when he finds out? Is Guenevere rescued? How does Guenevere end up getting herself in even more trouble?)

For four months, you’ll receive one shipment each month (so four total shipments) of a special yarn club colorway based upon this story of the Abduction of Guenevere. The story has been split into four parts. Each month, you’ll receive part of the story and a color of yarn based upon that part of the story. In at least one of the packages, you’ll receive an extra little gift.

Each yarn color is a surprise that you’ll anticipate each month along with the next part of the story. The colors are exclusive to the yarn club for at least three months from the date of shipment.

Each yarn base will be your choice. You can receive the same base throughout the entire club or you can mix and match and get a different base in each shipment. You’ll also be able to choose how many skeins of yarn (1-4) you receive each month (same number of skeins per month). All bases sent as part of the club contain 100 grams per skein.

You’ll also have the option of participating in a knit-along/crochet-along in the Round Table Yarns group on Ravelry, where you can chat with other yarn club members and be eligible to win prizes. In addition, you’ll receive a recommended list of pattern ideas for using your yarn club yarn.

Check out the club website for more information, including reviews of previous clubs and FAQs.

Halloween-Inspired Self-Striping Colorway

Halloween is 6 weeks away, which means you have just enough time to knit or crochet yourself a special pair of Halloween socks. This special Halloween-inspired colorway has four stripes: pumpkin orange (thin), black (thin), pumpkin orange (thick), black (thick). This colorway will be available through Halloween.

The name of this colorway is Tarn Wathelene. Where did this name come from? Well, a medieval story called The Awntyrs (Adventures) off Arthur contains a scene in which Gawain and Guenevere encounter a ghost! The Tarn Wathelene is the name of the lake where the ghost appears. I share more about the story on the inside of the yarn label.

Note: I’m dyeing batches of this colorway as they are ordered. Sometimes the yarn will be ready to ship and sometimes the yarn will be a preorder with shipment within a week. The listing will be updated and clearly marked whether the yarn is ready to ship or a preorder.

I hope you have fun with this Halloween-inspired self-striping colorway!

Introducing The Wooing of Isolde

Round Table Yarns is proud to introduce you to a new colorway: The Wooing of Isolde.

This icy light blue colorway will enchant you like the first perfect blue sky of spring or the eyes of the most beautiful girl in the world. It’s a cool, pastel blue with subtle streaks of silvery white for depth and intrigue. Once you get your hands on it you’ll never want to let it go, though you may be inspired to create something fit for an ice queen.

As with all of the colors from Round Table Yarns, there’s a story behind the name. This color name comes from the larger story of the love affair between Tristan and Isolde. Check out the color on the Round Table Yarns website to read the story behind the name. This color is currently available on four bases: Isolde (lace weight; 55% Bluefaced Leicester, 45% Silk), Camelot (fingering weight; 80% Superwash Merino/10% Cashmere/10% nylon), Tristan (sport weight; 100% Superwash Merino wool), and Avalon (DK weight; 50% Merino/50% silk).

Round Table Yarns Tristan and Isolde Yarn Club

The Round Table Yarns Tristan and Isolde Yarn Club is open for subscriptions now through January 31, 2017.

The story of Tristan and Isolde tells of the forbidden love affair between this knight and lady, who is married to Tristan’s uncle, King Mark. Their tale is woven into the fabric of the Arthurian legends, usually as a foil for the love triangle between Lancelot, Guenevere, and Arthur. That love triangle ends in tragedy, with the destruction of Camelot. Does the story of Tristan and Isolde take a similar path? Are the lovers able to stay together? Find out during the course of this nine-month yarn club.

For nine months, you’ll receive one shipment each month of a special yarn club colorway based upon story of Tristan and Isolde. This story has been split into nine parts. Each month, you’ll receive part of the story and a color of yarn based upon that part of the story.

Each yarn color is a surprise that you’ll anticipate each month along with the next part of the story. The colors are exclusive to the yarn club for at least three months from the date of shipment.

Each yarn base will be different and will range from lace to worsted/aran weights. Four of the bases will be regular Round Table Yarns bases (including the new laceweight base), and five of the bases will be special bases chosen for the club. Those bases may at some point be added to the regular lineup, but will be exclusive to the yarn club for at least a month from the date of shipment.

You’ll also have the option of participating in a knit-a-long/crochet-a-long in the Round Table Yarns group on Ravelry, where you can chat with other yarn club members and be eligible to win prizes. In addition, you’ll receive a recommended list of pattern ideas for using your yarn club yarn.

Here’s what Shannon C. said about the most recent yarn club from Round Table Yarns:

“I’d never joined a yarn club before the first Round Table Yarns club last winter. I was a little concerned about making the commitment; I can be really picky about my yarn and color choices! However, I was already familiar with many of the Round Table Yarns bases, and every colorway I’d seen was so rich and vibrant. It seemed like a fairly safe bet, and I loved the idea of getting exclusive colorways! It was also an opportunity to get out of my merino comfort zone: the potential for trying out new fibers I might not have considered purchasing on my own, and using colors that I normally would dismiss outright at the LYS.

“I’m now planning to sign up for my third subscription to Round Table Yarns. I love anticipating the surprise waiting for me in the mailbox, seeing what neat little extra is included in the package, and reading about the inspiration for that month’s color. It never fails to amaze me that Karen can link together such a variety of rich, regal colors through the tales of Camelot and her denizens. A curated bundle of patterns appropriate for each month’s club selection always helps to inspire, and I really enjoy watching the other club members post about their projects with the club yarn.

“This isn’t your typical flavor-of-the-month yarn club!”

Round Table Yarns Poisoned Apple Yarn Club

The newest yarn club for Round Table Yarns is currently open through September 15 for subscriptions. This four-month yarn club is based upon the Arthurian story of the poisoned apple. Guenevere has been accused of poisoning a knight and will be burnt at the stake if she is found guilty. Did she do it? Will she be found guilty or innocent? What will happen to Arthur’s court? Find out as you receive part of the story in each of the four shipments.

Each month, you’ll receive a different yarn base with a special club colorway (exclusive to the club for at least three months) inspired by that month’s portion of the story; both base and color will be a surprise. You’ll receive a postcard with the story in each shipment as well as at least one special surprise gift through the course of the club. You will also be invited to participate in the club’s KAL/CAL (and possibly win some prizes) and will receive a list of recommended patterns for that month’s yarn.

Payment for the yarn club can be all up front (for a slightly reduced cost) or through four monthly installment payments. You can sign up for one, two, three, or four skeins of yarn per month. Shipping is available worldwide, with cost determined by location.
