Born in the Shanghai Ghetto after her family fled Germany in 1939, Judy Fleischer Kolb donated her little red dress for the 2009 opening of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. Kolb’s story is told in detail in the Little Red Dress of Hope on Modern Daily Knitting, which invites each of us into the story of Kolb and her family, who were among 20,000+ refugees who fled Nazi persecution to Shanghai, the last safe harbor in the world.

As an homage to the endurance of this piece of clothing, the piece includes a link to a contemporary little red dress knitting pattern by designer Melissa Shinsato, available for purchase on the knitting website Ravelry.

Kolb, a former nurse and museum volunteer, uses her dress to urge children to have courage and to “realize their heroes are right in front of them.” Kolb continues, “I’m so happy my dress can bring hope to others. I only wish I could share the impact of the little red dress with my family who made my life so special.”

Starting Feb 17, a Knit-Optional KAL will be held on Facebook, accessible via the Little Red Dress KAL Facebook group, which is comprised of people who have been touched by the moving story, will have the opportunity to meet Kolb, Singer and Shinsato as they knit the dress step-by-step.

The little red dress is on display at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, IL. Museum volunteers have knit 60 copies of the dress, which are sent to classrooms around the nation to teach about the Holocaust, reaching more than 1,200 students each month.

Each vendor will have a 45-minute slot every hour on the hour to present their company to you. Each vender will be sharing with us some “tricks” of the trade. Want to get a head start on some holiday knitting? Us too! We are casting on for a holiday stocking Knit-a-Long on November 1st, and hope you’ll join us. There will be weekly prizes, encouragement, help if needed, and we’ll share our progress with each other. Plus, we’ll have a blast knitting a straightforward, two-color stocking in DK weight.

I am very happy to be teaching at VKL October edition with two new classes:

• Knitting in Two Directions: The Modular Elongated Triangle Shawl (Saturday Oct 10) – The Modular Elongated Triangle (or Triangular) Shawl that will be taught in this class is knitted in two different directions! The idea is to use the Talyse pattern to demonstrate the details and techniques of this construction, which creates a very elongated triangle (Wingspan 68” / 173 cm x Center Depth 15” / 38 cm after blocking) shawl with just one skein of fingering or sock yarn! The participants will received a code for downloaing Talyse pattern for the class!

• Create with What You Have: Upcycling Your Stash! (Sunday Oct 11) – I am very excited about this creative class! Everything in your stash is very welcome on this class! It is possible that we have leftovers from previous projects, some skeins found on a thrift store, or maybe a gift from a friend! We would love it if you bring to the class different yarn weights with all kinds of fiber contents, because in this creative class we will renew the way we look at those yarns, mixing colors, fibers, textures creating macro motifs and opening a whole new world of possibilities for our stash. Concepts covered in class:

– Focus on giving info and tools to encourage the knitters to upcycle what they already have in stash; a playful way to be confident to explore creativity
– Using a few macro motifs as a template, the participants will be invited to approach colors, textures and fibers in a more freely way.
– The more crazy or tacky the yarn, the better!

Hello from Stardust Fiber Studio!

Time has almost run out to sign up for our studio’s first virtual Knit-a-Long! Sign up by September 30th, 2020 to join us in all of the fun! The pattern we will be doing is the beautiful Waiting for Rain shawl by Sylvia McFadden. We are extremely excited to be able to showcase our new base collection with this gorgeous pattern! The Knit-a-Long will be for the one color pattern, but for those that are up for a challenge, the pattern also comes with modifications to add a second color, more lace, and different cast-offs. We will be listing color combinations to choose from for those who want two colors. This knit-a-long will run from November 1st to December 31st. The Knit-a-Long kit comes with two hand dyed skeins of our signature yarn and an exclusive Knit-a-Long stitch marker set for your project!

During the Knit-a-long, we will host a weekly Knit and Sip via Zoom Wednesday nights from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM PST, so that you can hang out and chat with other knitters. Break out your favorite tea or drink and join us. You can be a part of the Zoom calls by joining our new Community Group on Facebook. Not only will you finish this knit-a-long with a beautiful new shawl, there will also be giveaways for participants along the way! We are so excited to have you join us. The kits for the knit-a-long will be available for purchase through the end of September in order to give us time to dye before the start date in November.

September 30th, 2020 is also the deadline to purchase our first annual Advent Calendar! These gift boxes will include 24 individually packaged mini skeins to open throughout December and one full skein to open on Christmas. All of the yarn in this calendar is in our signature fingering weight base, Andromeda. There will also be lots of little gifts and surprises in each day’s box as well. This is a perfect gift for yourself or your favorite fiber artist this Christmas. There will be a few “traditional” Christmas-themed skeins, as well as a variety of jewel tones and timeless colors that can be used in a variety of projects!

Not only will we have our yarn Advent calendar this year, we will also have a stitch marker Advent calendar available for the avid collector. You will receive daily presents to open with unique, handmade stitch markers, and on Christmas you will receive one of our new Analog Row Counters. Both the yarn and stitch marker advent calendars will be available for pre-order until September 30th.

You don’t want to miss out on either of these exciting opportunities!
