A little corner shop

  • Red and green yarn.

Hello! My name is Gail and Dragon Thistle Fibers is my little corner store. I’m a small-batch dyer and offer a variety of colors and weights. I have put some holiday colors in my shop, including some sock sets in 50-gram skeins that come with a mini! Christmas Party, and Holly Jolly are just two of my holiday colors — come and have a look to see what else is in stock! I have other sets made up in a beautiful soft Merino/angora 80/20 mix. This really is a pretty, and so soft, wool that knits up gorgeously!

Virtu-Wool Fiber Festival: Tricks and Treats

Join 22 of the best and brightest in the fiber industry for this two-day virtual fiber frolic. We will have vendors presenting everything from fiber and yarn to bags and stitch markers. Each vendor will have a 45-minute slot every hour on the hour to present their company to you. Each vender will be sharing with us some “tricks” of the trade. Whether it is introducing you to the animals that provide fiber or a dyeing demonstration, each hour will have something new and unique to share. Come learn how to wind a skein of yarn into a ball without a swift or ball winder! Watch a pottery demonstration. Come see something set on fire! And as an even more special “treat” the vendors have collaborated with a show color palette with special yarns and products available to coordinate your next project!

The date is this weekend, October 31-November 1 beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern time and running until 9 p.m. both days. We hope to see you there!

Halloween colorway is here!

  • Black and red yarn and fiber.

Happy Halloween!

October is nearing its end and with that comes one of my most favorite days of the year: Halloween!

This year I designed a new colorway just for this special day: “Beyond the Veil.”
It is available as both yarn and fiber.

They are both 100% wool (Corriedale cross) and in fact come from the same fleece. I washed, picked, carded, dizzed, dyed and spun it all personally, as always supervised by my shop mascot and canine supervisor Fiberdog Hestia. The fiber braids are 50g, the yarn 100g each.

In addition to this I also added a dyed-to-order service for fiber braids.

If you are curious about my process of creating yarn, I have created a blog post about it:

Have a spooky Halloween!

Palettes for Making Undyed Yarns Pop!

  • A brown knitted square with a circle of gray.

At Gothfarm Yarn, we love our neutral shades. After all, our last Indie Untangled blog post showcased our array of gray yarn and roving!

But working with our undyed yarn doesn’t have to mean projects in muted colors. Check out four color palette ideas to make striking knits with our undyed, naturally-colored fibers! Each palette photo is posted in the same order as the list below.

#1. Harmonious
This palette uses three yarns in earthy hues. The colors work together; one doesn’t dominate over another. Our two brown yarns — Aswan and Ultisol — form a marled background. The gray yarn — Gabbro –creates a solid foreground shape. Aswan’s subtle gray tweed helps strengthen the color harmony.

Yarn guide:
Light brown: Aswan
Dark brown: Ultisol
Gray: Gabbro

#2. Dye Collider
There’s no reason why undyed yarns and indie-dyed yarns should live in different worlds!* In fact, undyed yarns can create a neutral canvas that can make indie-dyed yarns pop! In this palette, our white yarn — Bone — is combined with hand-spun dyed yarn from Hedgehog Fibres. An added bonus: Bone’s fuzzy halo helps blend it all together.

*as long as the dye is well-set, and the finished product is gently hand washed in cool water.

Yarn guide:
White: Bone
Colored yarn: Hedgehog Fibres hand-spun (personal stash)

#3 Marled Metallics
Our golden, lace-weight yarn – Aten – can add shine and class to any project. Simply hold it together with your main yarn to create a marled metallic look. We paired it here with our matte-gray yarn Nebelung.

Yarn guide:
Gold: Aten
Gray: Nebelung

#4 High contrast
Undyed yarn is known for complex, rich neutrals. You can make neutrals pop by choosing a high-contrast colorwork motif. A classic example of that is Houndstooth. We did our own take on it based on the tooth shape of the Crab eater seal. The pattern chart is free on Ravelry! https://www.ravelry.com/projects/GothfarmYarn/crabeater-seal-teeth-motif

Yarn guide:
Black: Carbonado
White: Kaolin
Gray: Gabbro

Special one day sale at Fiberdog Fibers

September 28th is coming up and guess what? It is my wedding anniversary!

I like to spread the joy I feel in my life and crafts so on that day only EVERYTHING in my store will be 20% off! You won’t need any code, the discount should be applied automatically at checkout. Of course if there are any issues, please contact me so I can solve your problem as quickly as possible.

Also, I have restocked “Hot Summer”!
It is available both as yarn and fiber and, like all of my products, is hand-dyed and handspun.

Finally, I’d like to introduce my Ravelry group to you, the Fiberdog Fibers Ravelry Fiber Pack. The goal of this group is to create a community where fiber crazy people like you and me can meet and share our joy. Share projects, help each other when we are stuck somewhere, just generally support each other. I will share updates to the shop there, but you don’t have to be a customer to be part of that group (though I would certainly appreciate it 😉 )

I’m looking forward to sharing my fiber passion with you!

Rhode Love Hat knit pattern

  • A woman models a purple and gray hat on a beach.

Rhody Love Hat is a cozy knitted hat named for the lovely little state of Rhode Island. It gets chilly in the autumn in New England and stays cold until springtime. Whether you are exploring Providence in October or walking on one of the many beautiful beaches in the ocean state in early spring, wearing knitwear is definitely needed in Rhode Island. The designer — that’s me — and my collaboration partner, indie yarn dyer Jill of Jilly and Kiddles, live, work and create in Rhode Island. Rhody Love Hat can be made in any two colorways. Try contrasting colors for exciting pops of color, or mix your favorite two colors for fun stripes. Visit Ravelry for the pattern and Jillyandkiddles.com for yarn options! This hat is the perfect accessory as we head into fall!
