Meet the makers
Sarah launched her indie dye company three years ago out of the community room in the sadly now-closed Happy Knits in her native Portland, Oregon. She is currently based in Santa Cruz, California and specializes in woolly, non-Superwash yarn with an emphasis on American-raised breeds, like the Rambouillet she sourced from Lani’s Lana and had milled by JaggerSpun in Springvale, Maine.
“I’m lucky enough to live near wine country, so I love trying all of our local wines. I love rosé for its crispness with a hint of sweet. To me it says summer, and I’ll happily drink it all year long to keep that summer feeling going. My favorite rosé is Bonny Doon Vineyards Vin Gris de Cigare Rosé. It even comes in a sparkling version! If you need me this summer, I’ll be knitting on the deck and sipping my rosé.
Tamy makes hand-dyed yarn come alive with her elegant shawls and accessories, which feature lace and texture. She lives in southern New Jersey with her husband, who she considers her biggest knitting enabler.
“I love sweet tea! My husband and I are avid gardeners and so naturally we have a variety of mint plants growing in our garden, which includes spearmint, mojito mint, peppermint and chocolate mint (yup, there really is such a thing and it smells heavenly!). We love harvesting the leaves and steeping them in boiling water, to then make iced sweet tea. When it’s 90 degrees outside, nothing beats sweet tea for me.”
Portland, Oregon-based Thao creates “snacks” for fiber crafters. Through her designs — Thao comes up with the creative concepts and then teams up with illustrators and local printers who bring them to life — she aims to create inclusive products reflecting the multicultural diversity found throughout the fiber community.
“I’m normally a red wine drinker but in the summer, I prefer something cold, so my go-to is rosé. I kinda enjoy Underwood because it comes in a can and I finish it in one sitting (as opposed to an entire bottle).”
Lisa launched Indie Untangled in 2014 as a way to help fiber crafters discover and keep track of hand-dyed yarn, designs and fiber-related accessories. It has since grown to include events like the Rhinebeck Trunk Show and the sale of exclusive colorways and designs.
“My husband and I were married 13 years ago at the Wolffer Estate vineyard on the East End of Long Island, about 70 miles from where I grew up. We’d first visited Wolffer in 2001, the summer after we started dating. While I’ve since discovered different rosés, theirs sets the bar for all the others — it’s dry, crisp and full of flavor. I also love their rosé gin, which makes for the ultimate summer G&T.”
