June brings a new addition to the shop: Calliope! This fingering weight, 100% raw silk yarn is kettle dyed in crisp, vibrant colors. I don’t know about you, but I always cringe at the price of imitation silk yarns. As well, I think it’s just crazy to pay an arm and a leg for non-synthetic silk that has been scoured, bleached, and degraded into something that is soft and shiny, but very different from what nature intended. Neither scoured nor chemical treated, Calliope drapes like linen, plus it retains all of the elasticity that those little silk worms intended it to have. Instead of that high-polished industrial shine that you get with most silk yarns, Calliope retains its natural opalescent sheen, even after dying.
Each hank is 400 yards (100g) and retains that OOAK quality due to the kettle dying process. Colors are fixed so, unlike many raw silks out there, the colors will not bleed or fade. Current colorways include: Blue Agave (pictured), Flamingo, French Lilac (pictured), Cardinal, Cove, and Java (pictured). The weather has been kind of crazy here on the farm lately, so look for additional colors to arrive in the shop in the next week or so.
I can’t think of a more perfect summer-weight yarn, especially for lacey accessories like shawls and long, draped scarves. Choose Calliope in place of any fingering weight sock yarn for your next summer project and wrap yourself in the luxury of silk!
