Showing Softyarn Designs

The “Gift of the Mermaid” shawl, originally designed for a mystery knitalong, is now available in standard pattern format. Worked with two colors of fingering/ sock yarn, this crescent-shaped shawl keeps things fun, switching stitch patterns every few inches. The accompanying story takes you on a mermaid’s journey to go along with the pattern.

The shawl was designed to be worked with one variegated or hand-painted skein and a coordinating tonal/semisolid — but it also looks great in a gradient yarn. This is an intermediate-level pattern that includes lots of description about the stitch patterns, along with photo tutorials, so that you can learn new stitches without stress. Designer support is provided if you run into questions.

The Mermaid Scales stitch is not only fun to do and easy to learn, it is also a great showcase for beautiful variegated, tonal or hand-dyed yarn. It’s a delight to see how the stitches catch the light and show off your beautiful yarn. The “mistake-stitch” ribbing is also easy to work and provides the perfect fit for this fun-to-make, fun-to-wear hat.

This hat takes about 175-200 yards of sportweight yarn (gauge 24 sts/4” or 10cm) and is worked in the round, but the pattern includes instructions on how to work the first few rows flat if you find it challenging to join in the round without twisting.
