Great Southern Yarn is for lovers of quality yarn who want their garments to be cherished and to last a lifetime. Our yarns are 100% Australian made from the highest quality Merino and alpaca fleece, hand dyed and luxuriously soft.
Founded four years ago by Jennifer and her husband Andrew, Great Southern Yarn has established itself as Australia’s premium yarn. “We needed to know where the fleece comes from and how well the animals are treated,” says Jennifer.
To achieve this, we have single-origin sourced our fleece from ethical producers who care for the welfare of their animals. We run our own mob of Merino sheep at Mount Bodangora, near Dubbo, NSW, to source a fleece with a 4-inch staple, to help make a superior yarn. These sheep are non-mulesed. Our Suri alpaca comes from Banjo Ridge at Dungog, NSW, and our Huacaya alpaca from southern Tasmania.
We have two yarn bases: 100% Merino and our GSY Blend, which is 50% Merino and 50% alpaca, a mix of Huacaya and Suri. The blend combines the softness and drape of the alpaca with the bounce of Merino. Both bases are absolutely scrumptious.
We are working with some wonderful designers both in America and Australia. Caroline Hegwer’s Amonite Shawl is breathtakingly original and showcases our yarn to perfection. We have worked with Caroline to create kits, each with three of our colours, two semisolid and one variegated. Caroline’s Kits can be ordered on our website for shipping from within the U.S.
Our yarns can also be ordered with free shipping to the U.S. for three skeins or more.
