Each day for the next 24 days, Alice of Backyard Fiberworks will be posting an Advent giveaway on Instagram. This year is even better than last year, as Alice is partnering with two dozen designers — including Kirsten Kapur, Alicia Plummer, Ambah O’Brien, Mary Annarella, Laura Aylor and Bristol Ivy — and matching up her yarn and their patterns for the ultimate prizes. Some designers are even offering some discounts around their giveaway,…

What to stash this week: Yarn nation

The third installment of Indie Untangled’s Knitting Our National Parks takes us to Joshua Tree National Park, a surreal landscape east of the beaches and palm trees of Los Angeles and San Diego. Jill turned this photo of a sunset framing one of the park’s giant yuccas into not one, but two colorways, and designer Kirsten Kapur created a worsted weight, Western chic cowl using both colors. The yarn will be available to preorder exclusively on Indie Untangled until November 13 or until sold out,…

2016 holiday newsletter giveaway

It’s hard to believe this crazy year is soon coming to a close. It seems like only yesterday I was ringing in 2016 with my husband in a Santa Barbara hotel room, falling asleep after watching the Times Square ball drop at 9 p.m. Pacific time (ah, jet lag).

As I have done for the past few years, I am thanking my wonderful newsletter subscribers, and welcoming new ones,…

What to stash this week: A new ewe

Linda of Kettle Yarn Co. desired a yarn that was sheep-y and rustic, yet soft enough for princess-y skin. So, she helped dream up Baskerville, a blend of 60% Exmoor Blueface, 25% Gotland and 15% silk. This Kettle Yarn Co. exclusive is a worsted-spun 2ply that comes in a 437-yard skeins that Linda indigo dyed in lovely shades that range from a lightly heathered silver to a deep blue.

Here’s a Valentine’s Day gift for you,…

2015 holiday newsletter giveaway

I know we say this every year, but the holidays have snuck up on me. It seems like only yesterday I was lighting the first menorah candle (from left to right, because my childhood with an electric menorah that we displayed in the window didn’t prepare me well for lighting actual candles…). Since Hanukkah was early this year, my newsletter giveaway doesn’t overlap with both winter holidays, but I hope you’ll appreciate the sentiment just the same….

What to stash this week: Winners and llamas (and yaks)

As a journalist, I love a good follow-up story. We have one this week: In my recent interview with Carl Koop of Bijou Basin Ranch, he revealed that they were in the process of collaborating with a number of indie dyers on special colorways for their Tibetan yak yarns. Before I knew it, I had a Marketplace post from them announcing a set of seven colorways hand-dyed by Philadelphia-based Lattes &…
