Showing The Wandering Flock

One of my first New York City summer experiences was the Coney Island Mermaid Parade and it was by far one of my favourite experiences in NYC. The Mermaid Parade is an annual parade held at Coney Island. It embodies the fun, creative energy of NYC that we don’t always see. A sea of people dressed as Mer-people in blues, greens, lots of neon and plenty of homemade costumes, all in the name of fun.

This fun, creative spirit is what inspired our limited release for the summer. Mermaid Parade, named after the parade itself, is a pastel sage speckled with pops of neon yellow and pink and deep green. It will be available on our Fingering Single and Mohair Silk bases.

Mermaid Parade will go live in The Wandering Flock Etsy shop on Friday, May 27 at 12 noon Eastern.

Our exploration of Tie Dye-inspired yarn, has finally led us to releasing the “Tie Dye Your Knits” kit.

At the beginning of Summer, I created the Tye Dye Yarn Collection, a series of Tie Dye-inspired yarn, a series of three fun cheerful colors: Cosmic Tye Dye, Lavender Highlights and Ombres Skies, which are now also available in Mohair Silk. However, while having Tye Dye-inspired yarn was amazing, it still did not satisfy the full Tie Dye look I was hoping to achieve at The Wandering Flock, so I decided the create the “Tie Dye Your Knits” kit, a DIY tie dye kit, where we encourage you to Tie Dye your FO.

The kit comes with two skeins of Organic Pima Cotton Yarn in DK weight, the Tilly Crop Top Knitting Pattern, which is a quick easy knit, and all the materials and dye needed to tie dye your project. Don’t think you could tie dye your FO? Well, the beauty of our kit is that you can tie dye the yarn instead. We have two color choices available: PeriPinkie Winkie and Cosmic Speckles.

The kits are available for preorder until August 31st and will be shipped the following week. After all the kits have shipped, I will be hosting two Zoom Tie Dye Party sessions, where we’ll demo various tie dye techniques, how to manipulate to dye to get the shade you like and all the tips and tricks we know to get the results you want — kinda like a virtual workshop, but we like the sound of a party better.

Each kit comes with enough dye to also tie dye a couple of T-shirts with your tie dyed FO. We do have a limited amount of kits available and additional skeins can be bought with your kits.

With summer on the horizon and the promise of warmer weather, I knew I wanted to dye something that was fun and cheerful. Using inspiration from tie dye, holographic fashion and trends I’ve been seeing on the fashion runway, I created three new colorways: Cosmic Tye Dye, Lavender Highlights and Ombre Skies.

Recreating and translating looks from the runway into fun colorful skeins of yarn, our Tie-Dye series in our 100% Merino Fingering Singles, is a bright pastel palette of yarn meant for fun summer knits, whether you’re making a cosy shawl for cool summer nights or a fun summer sweater.

While most of us are still staying home right now, I hope these cheerful colors will remind us of the brighter days ahead!

Don’t let this quarantine bring you down and use the promo code QUARANSKEIN for free shipping on all purchases above $50 in our shop.

After leaving the world of fast fashion, I was determine to start a business that would be committed to sustainability. While becoming an indie dyer was not the immediate solution that came to mind, it was something I soon discovered gave me the outlet of creativity I craved so much that was lost after I stopped working in fashion.

I had always been a knitter, long before I started working in the world of fashion and always had trouble finding yarn in the exact shade I was hoping for, or patterns I was dying to knit. Having always been a product designer, the only natural solution was to just make it. I’ve always enjoyed the process of creating my own unique creations, so I almost exquisitely never knitted with any patterns but my own.

Finally, in the summer of 2019, I took a leap of faith and decided that I would start The Wandering Flock, a knitwear design studio and hand-dyed yarn line. At the same time, I also took a chance and submitted a couple of sweater designs to Pom Pom Quarterly. I never expected to hear back, but miraculously they choose one of my designs for their Winter 2019 issue, and gave me an opportunity to not only showcase my design, but my yarn as well.

While The Wandering Flock has only been around for three months, it has been an incredible journey, from appearing in Pom Pom to working with Indie Untangled and meeting knitters who have FOs knitted in my yarn!

Drawing from my experience in fashion, I approach dyeing with a lot of intention, and focus on the final product your creations. While a skein of yarn is where my process ends, I think about what you will make with it. My hope is to create a line of yarn and classic, yet contemporary, knitwear patterns that will fit into your everyday wardrobe.

I’m excited to announce that I will be presenting my line of yarn and patterns at the upcoming Vogue Knitting Live Marketplace in New York City (Booth 1101-1103). There you’ll get to experience my full line of yarn and see the sweater I designed for Pom Pom.
