The Internet is a great source of information these days… some of it conflicting. Take the name of this sweater: Isaura. Quite a few sites told me that Isaura (pronounced ee-SOW-rah) originated with the Portuguese, Spanish, or Late Roman, and indicates that one is from Isauria, a region in Asia Minor. On the other hand, an equal number of sites said that Isaura (now pronounced ee-SOR-uh) is from the Greek, and means “soft air,” or “gentle breeze.” Regardless of the actual origins of this particular word, here I prefer the Greek. This feminine cardigan is the perfect thing to pull on when the soft air of evening’s gentle breeze whispers against your skin.

Though it’s rarely the case, here the delicate lace and cable stitches are fully reversible, making the shawl collar look exactly the same on the front and back sides of the fabric, so there is no awkward wrong side to hide.

Cardigan is knit in pieces from the hem up. Lace panels are knit with each front, and are worked as an applied border from the top of the shoulder to the back of the neck, after back and front shoulders are joined. The lace pattern is mirrored (chiral) on right and left front panels, except that all lace-related decreases are k2tog for simplicity.

I’ve had spring on the mind lately while developing new hues of Islington for the coming months, and I’ve come up with a new range of hues which I realised are perfect for Saturday’s love up … and are in the shop update this week!

There is a good mix of updated stock, new colours and other bits for fun as well, so check in at 5pm GMT this Friday Feb 13th on the new website shop to see what is available!

Also, if anyone is looking for last minute Valentine’s Day gifts, or wanting to forward some hints to a significant other, I also have gift certificates available as downloads in store!

Happy Valentines Day, everyone!

I’ve just released Sundance, a fun venture into colorwork. The Sundance mitts are designed to keep help keep your hands and arms warm in those sub zero office temperatures that we all know and love. These cute mitts are knit up in Knitted Wit’s Victory DK in Wild Orchard and Naked.

Use coupon code: stupidgroundhog for $1 off of Sundance in my Ravelry pattern shop. Don’t wait because it expires on Midnight 2/15!

Wintertime is my favorite time to knit colorwork patterns. The longer nights and shorter days of winter seem to beg for brighter colors and patterns. The Sundance mitts are inspired by classic Norwegian mittens and sweaters with a touch of modern design.

Sundance is written in one size, but can easily be altered by going up or down a needle size or two, or by using a lighter or heavier weight yarn. Make sure to knit a swatch to check your gauge and to ensure you will like the fabric if you are altering the size of the mitts. My test knitter Julia, aka Sapphirechild on Ravelry, used Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool and altered her gauge to make them a bit smaller.

and
Plush Super Bulky, 80% superwash Merino & 20% nylon

The Magpie Fibers Etsy shop will also occasionally be updated with ready-to-ship skeins.

I’m so loving this update for the diversity of fibers that I’ve listed today! I have 19 micron Merino, BFL/Silk blend, Falkland and more. I also realized that there are a lot of old colorways that I have almost forgotten. I get so excited about playing with creating new colorways that sometimes I forget that I already have some wonderful ones that I also like to recreate from time to time. With this update, I have brought back some of my old favorites.

Not only have we been dyeing up tons of gorgeous colors for Stitches West, but we’ve also been hard at work, preparing to launch the SkeinMinder! What is the SkeinMinder, you say? It’s a tool for indie dyers and production spinners that takes the fuss out of winding yarn.

The motorized skein winders that indie dyers use are made by other small businesses, and are pretty simple in design. The SkeinMinder automates them! Just set it to the number of rotations you want, and push the big red button. The SkeinMinder keeps track for you, and automatically stops your winder. It’ll even detect if your yarn has jammed and pause everything!

We recently launched the SkeinMinder website, and are busy preparing for our Kickstarter campaign. Why Kickstarter? Well, the SkeinMinder is a custom electronics product, and those are expensive to make. We need to build them in batches of 100 for it to be feasible. With Kickstarter, we can make sure there are at least 100 dyers who want one. With their orders, and the support of the fiber community, we can start up a production line and make the SkeinMinder a reality!

We’re also going to have plenty of beautiful yarn rewards – there will be Alpenglow Yarn of course, plus yarns from several of our indie dyer beta group! And what a group it is, there will be packages of yarn that include Sincere Sheep, Knitted Wit, Canon Hand Dyes, Pigeonroof Studios, Hazel Knits, and Teresa Ruch, just to name a few! Stay tuned here or through the SkeinMinder newsletter to find out when the Kickstarter kicks off!

We’ll also have SkeinMinder demos set up at Stitches West, come visit us in booths 936/938! We’ll also have a stunning array of naturally dyed yarn that we’ve dyed up just for the occasion. See you soon!
