Needle is a small, slender sword that Jon Snow had made by Mikken for Arya Stark before he went away to the Night’s Watch. The sword is suitable to Arya’s slight build and the style of fencing known as “water dancing” used by the bravos of Braavos. Arya named it Needle as an ironic reference to her hatred of needlework. She sometimes refers to her use of the sword as needlework. Eventually, Needle also comes to represent her previous life at Winterfell and symbolizes the happy childhood with her family, which she still yearns for.

Earlier this year at Maryland Sheep & Wool I was able to spend a little bit of time chatting with Miss Babs. We talked about our favorite characters from Game of Thrones and tossed around a few ideas for a new Game of Thrones inspired pattern. Babs and I both really like Arya’s character. She’s smart, spunky, and doesn’t really back down from anything. On the trip home I worked up a small chart and some sketches of Arya’s Needle and then got to swatching. After a Skype meeting with Babs and Jen, Babs created a limited edition colorway called Arya in Yummy 2-ply. It will be available in limited quantities this weekend in her booth at Rhinebeck along with a hard copy version of both patterns. The Arya yarn will also be available for pre-order at missbabs.com.

Arya’s Needle is a versatile shawl pattern and can easily be knit with three different looks. The edging and center sections have the same number of stitches and can be interchanged if you would like. You could have a shawl with three swords, two swords and lace in the center only, or lace in all three sections. The choice is yours!

The long and slender point of needle will let you Subtly wield your sword with Arya’s Mitts. Instructions are included for a shorter version if you would prefer to wield a dagger rather than a sword! The pattern has two sizes: S/M and M/L and is very easily adjusted by going up or down a needle size.

The patterns can be purchased individually or in ebook format on Ravelry.

I’m excited to announce that there are several new yarns and colorways in the shop that I think everyone will be as excited about as well!

First, though, SIREN TWO SOCK IS BACK! For those unfamiliar with Siren Two Sock, it is approximately 380 yards of 80% superwash Merino, 10% Cashmere, and 10% nylon. Pretty much the same as the Luxury Sock except that Luxury Sock has 20% Cashmere. People have been asking about this yarn for a while and I’m so happy to be able to bring it back.

Pigeonroof Studios is also making the foray into the ever popular superwash Merino singles yarns with our Superwash Merino Singles, approximately 440 yards of a singles construction superwash Merino that takes dye amazingly.

We’ve had it before, but not for quite some time: Silky DK. Approximately 230 yards of 50/50 superwash merino and silk, making this yarn have amazing drape and shine. It feels so good!

In the DK weight realm as well, we’re offering another new Made in the U.S.A. yarn– American Squishy DK. To say this yarn is squishy is actually an understatement– I’ve not seen such a lovely plump yarn before! Think cables, cables, cables. Like the other American yarns, the stitch definition is superb. And at 300 yards for $25, it’s also an amazing deal.

Last, but not least, Rustic Silk Worsted and Rustic Silk Lace. Both of these yarns are 100% pure silk singles yarns from India. Rustic Silk Worsted (approximately 250 yards) has a lofty, almost woolen feel– it would make a fabulous substitution yarn for those who cannot work with wool. Rustic Silk Lace (approximately 850 yards) knits up into a soft and drapey fabric with a gorgeous sheen. Perfect for lightweight garments or shawls.

All of these yarns introduce some new colorways that I hope everyone will love! There are also some new colorways in High Twist Sock and American Twist Worsted.

I will be posting a number of blends on the blue end of the colour spectrum tomorrow! A little preview for you above!

clockwise from left: Wimbledon Sport in new colourway After Eight, Islington fingering in L’heure Bleue and Old Smoke, more Wimbledon Sport in an ooak colourway, a new Heath fingering hue called Dungaree Marl, and finally more Islington fingering in Blighty grey.

The shop update is this Friday October 17th at 5pm GMT- check your local time on the Kettle Yarn Co. Ravelry group!

I’m pleased to announce the launch of my Sylvan Scarf Pattern. It’s the perfect thing to keep you warm on a walk in the woods, wide enough to provide plenty of material to snuggle into and long enough to wrap all the way round. The central lace panel is reminiscent of fully grown pine trees, whilst the edging and borders feature the saplings of the forest floor.

The Scarf is knitted with just one skein of my newly-launched yarn base Tethera 4ply. The sample is knitted in the Sitka colourway. Tethera 4ply is a smooth 4-ply yarn, spun from 100% British BFL wool, perfect for hats, gloves and socks. There are 14 semi-solid colours available now at my Etsy store.

This is a sideways shawl that was inspired by Sara, a dear friend of Tami Dyman of Eternity Ranch. Sara is an inspirational example of beauty, grace, and forgiveness for those who turned her world upside down. The yarn colors Tami chose to honor Sara with were inspired by the breathing, majestic Western Montana Mountains where Sara lives and found the power to forgive. The collaboration of yarn meets design is a delicate, dense pattern that expresses Sara’s strength as well as her femininity, giving the feel of the serene mountains where Sara finds peace.. To read more about Sara’s inspirational story, please visit rubyridgetofreedom.com.

Copied with permission from Penny – Knit-By-Bit-Designs on Ravelry.

I am the dyer of the custom Colorway, Sara’s Story. It is a colorblock of Teal, Tan, and Grey. It shows off the stitch design beautifully.

Kits are available now until October 20th for pre order. If you are on Ravelry please sign in to either Eternity Ranch or Knitbybitdesigns, so we can get the pattern to you. If you are not on Ravelry, you can still order the yarn and pattern we will just send you the pattern via email.

The kit is up in Eternity Ranch Knits on Etsy.

You can join with any yarn if you can’t or do not want the kit yarn. Any Eternity Ranch yarn will qualify you for prizes on both boards, non- ER Yarns will still qualify you in Knit-By-Bit-Designs Group.
