New Sock Lines & Shop Update

  • A woman models pink to blue faded socks.
  • Socks in a pink to blue fade.

I’d like to introduce a few new sock lines, a new base to the SBY lineup for Spring 2020 and hugely discounted Sailing Sweater Kits! All are available in our next shop update April 5th at noon EDT with new additions to colourways — all prices in Canadian dollars which make shopping in USD a real bargain!

Introducing Deconstructed Fade Sock Sets – the idea for these came to me when I kept looking at prized skeins of yarn that were too pretty to knit with. What if I could take my SBY favourite colourways and have them knit into socks as they appear in the skeins — and to further the idea, take my favourite colourways and fade them into each other in perfectly matched socks? And there you have it – each set is 2x50gm (230yds/ each skein) skeins of 75% Superwash Merino/25% nylon of perfectly matched fades — all you have to do is pick your favourite pattern and knit knit knit.

Second in the new sock line is Sojourn Self-Striping Socks – from 12-24 stripes these socks are fun with long colour runs and unexpected striping patterns. All sets come with a coordinating-but-not-perfectly-matched mini for cuffs, heels and toes to add further dimension to your socks! Sets come with 75% Superwash Merino/25% nylon with 80gm/350yds of stripes and 20gm/90 yds of the mini.

Third in the sock lineup is Sole Mate Self-Striping Socks – these are my favourite pairings of variegated and semi-solids, striping together – all you have to do is knit, no more switching yarns every few rows, darning in ends, or getting your balls all tangled. Soul Mate colourways for our Sole Mate Socks! 75% Superwash Merino/25% nylon, 465yds.

A new base and a quick favourite is the Mariner Mohair Merino Single – so soft, gorgeous halo, and all in one perfect fingering weight single. This yarn has drape, but stability for your favourite sock weight sweaters, the softness and halo of mohair and a sheen as if there was silk in it. 56% Superwash Merino/44% Kid mohair, 100gm/437 yards per skein in a sock/fingering weight. Available now on our website!

I’ve had two shows cancelled this season and wholesale orders delayed and cancelled. As a result, I’ve also loaded my show special to the website for order, now with dyed-to-order options to be included in the update this April 5th at noon EDT – the kits, with gorgeously soft 100% SW Merino, are severely discounted (starting at $62 off the regular price!) and include the Sailing Sweater pattern along with the yarn to make it!

Hello! About Me, Shop Update, Sailor Sweater & Show Schedule

  • A collection of skeins of pastel hand-dyed yarn.

Hi! My name is Beckie, I’m the sole worker bee behind Shirley Brian Yarn… wait what? Your name is Beckie and you’re Shirley Brian Yarns? Huh? Shirley was my grandmother’s name — she was an epic knitter. She made sure that our family was never cold, and that my Barbie had the best knitwear collection in the world. Brian was my father, we lost him much too soon, and this is a way to keep him close daily. And there you have it: SBY.

I live and work with my pup Oliver in Ottawa, ON, Canada, and ship my yarns all over North America (hopefully worldwide soon). I’ve been in the yarn business for the better part of a decade. First as yarn store owner and then, after selling the store, I have been dedicated full time to SBY. I like to write patterns when there is time, I knit constantly and playing with blank yarns and colours is my full-time job and passion.

I like tomatoes, avocados, soup, and wine. I have travelled far and wide and continue to do so as much as I can. Reality TV binges fuel my knitting time and I consume a ridiculous amount of books on Audible monthly. I have a weakness for vintage knitting, spinning and weaving tools and notions, and would be embarrassed if you saw the size of my knitting bag collection.

And that’s me in as brief of a nutshell as I could manage. I hope you’ll join me on Instagram, my newsletter and in my Indie Untangled posts here for more SBY happenings! I’ve got so many exciting things coming and cannot wait to share them with you!

Sailing Sweater

My Sailing Sweater pattern was recently released on Ravelry. It’s a super simple quick knit and the easiest sweater to throw on for running around in. The pattern includes both completely written and charted instructions, and it is the perfect sweater to knit for those who prefer to work on accessories over garments, as it is like knitting shawl. The pattern is easily adjustable, with clear instructions on complete customization. It’s a super quick knit, too! I’ve just completed a navy blue version in a week!

Festival Season!

I’ve got a fully loaded fibre festival season ahead of me, and am adding dates in between already scheduled events. If you’d like to follow along and meet up with me at an event they are all listed here.

Want to have us visit your store for a trunk show, or a brioche class, or stock my yarns? Please get in touch!

Thanks so much for taking the time to spend reading my first post here!
