I’m so pleased to announce the release of Tyrion’s Gift, the fourth shawl patten in my Game of Thrones inspired series.

Tyrion’s Gift is a top down triangle shawl that is deceptively easy to knit. With resting rows on the wrong side, it’s a perfect project to take to knit group or work on while you watch the Game of Thrones Season 4 Premier. This tribute to Tyrion and his lady friend Shae is knit up in Miss Babs Tarte, in the Volcanic Eruption colorway. Tarte has a wonderful hand and is a generous 500 yard skein. Miss Babs dyed some up just in time for the pattern release and you can purchase directly from her site: missbabs.com

A huge thank you goes to my test knitters Margi and Helen who whipped through this pattern in no time and gave it raving reviews!

Like most couples, in the beginning Tyrion and Shae were truly in love. They were both quite happy until Tyrion’s father forced him to marry another woman.

Shae refused to leave Tyrion, even at the risk of her own safety. Tyrion was forced to resort to sending her away in a rather brisk fashion. As a parting gift to show how much he cared for her, Trion commissioned a shawl in deep reds of the Lannister colors.

A single, simple gift to keep Shae warm was what Tyrion intended to give to Shae. The betrayal that he got in return was most unexpected.

C. Whitney Knits and I are collaborating this spring! I’m hosting the Unlikely Friends KAL in my Ravelry group, Heather Anderson Designs, from April 1-May 15, 2015. This KAL features my two new shawl designs, the Fishtales Shawl and the Shoalmates Shawl. These shawls are suitable for beginners as well as experienced knitters. They can be (and have been) knit in multiple yarn weights, with multiple colors (including variegates), and with or without beads. They are quick knits and make great gifts to stash away for the holidays!

C. Whitney Knits has developed five exclusive colorways to complement this unlikely pairing of shawls: Nemo, Poseidon, Unlikely Friends, Mermaid Lagoon, and Loch Ness. Each colorway is available in a variety of bases and will be retired when this KAL ends.

We hope you’ll join us in the knitting fun!

Heather

Many of you know me from my Etsy Shop, “The Knitting Artist,” but did you know I also have designs on Ravelry?

I have been designing off and on for a few years now, and have several sock patterns, as well as multiple others on my Ravelry shop. The latest addition is “Midnight Surf,” a pair I designed when I decided to challenge myself to only make socks I design myself this year. The pair in particular utilizes a DK weight yarn with a flowing lace pattern. I chose this pattern because it reminded me of waves and the beach, and the blues in this yarn were perfect for an oceany themed design. Knit from the toe up with a standard gusset and triangle heel, these are a really quick and simple knit.

I hope that you enjoy knitting these socks as much as I did!

I’ve been known to run the odd naming contest on my blog when I cannot come up with a good pattern name on my own. I did that recently for this cowl design. Because the stitch is patterned from an architectural feature, the graceful ogee, I wanted a name related to a specific building, region, or even a tile design, something directly related to the motif. A creative knitter suggested that I name this design not after the All Saints church in London — the church is filled with ogees, arches, and other stunning architectural details — but rather after the street where it is found, Margaret Street.

Cowl is knit in the round from one end straight through to the other. The lace is easy to do, especially once you find your rhythm, and is very pleasing. I’ve provided four different sizing options, but many more are possible by simply changing the number of times the motif is worked in a circle, and how many times the rows are worked.

Our next kit is live! Glenna’s Cowl by Marly Bird is now available in our online store and will also be making its debut at the DFW Fiber Fest this weekend (we’re in booths 85 & 86!).

This cabled cowl is an instant classic, and it’s knit in Skye, one of our hand-dyed Outlandish colorways in our Himalayan Trail base. It’s a great way to count down the days til Jamie and Claire return to our lives in April! Retailing for $56, you’ll save over 15% when you purchase the yarn and pattern together in this convenient kit.

Construction and Size
This cowl uses a lace stitch pattern that creates a design that looks like a ring of shields around your neck (see About the Name below). Worked in the round on circular needles in a DK weight yarn, this cowl is fairly tall so you can wear it scrunched around your neck for extra warmth or even pull it up on the back of your head or in front of your face. The suggested yarn is a blend of merino and silk which provides softness and a lovely drape. Pattern includes both written directions as well as a chart for the lace pattern (which is also written out).

Skill Level: Advanced beginner
Skills needed: knitting in the round, yarn overs, decreases

Malabrigo Silky Merino (51% Silk, 49% Merino, 150 yds/137 m per 50 g skein); 3 skeins; sample uses colorway London Sky (or 400 yds (366 m) of another DK weight yarn)

About the Name
Brynhild is a character in the Völsunga saga, which is an Icelandic story from the thirteenth century. The story is probably most well known by the character Sigurd, who famously slays a dragon and eats its heart.

Brynhild is known as a shieldmaiden, a female warrior (also known as a Valkyrie). She is supposed to decide upon a battle between two kings, and instead of picking the king Odin favored, she chooses the other, angering Odin. She is punished by being made mortal and is placed in a castle that is surrounded by a wall of shields (which is much like the cowl—the stitch pattern forms a wall of shields), and she is surrounded by a ring of fire.

Sigurd rescues her (along with getting through the walls of shields and flames, he has to cut the extremely tight armor off of her), and the two seem to fall in love, but Sigurd ends up marrying someone else. Brynhild also marries and she and Sigurd’s wife argue over whose husband is braver, a conflict that reveals jealousies and betrayals. This situation leads to the murder of Sigurd. Brynhild, who is still in love with Sigurd, throws herself onto the funeral pyre.

Tavie is a worsted weight cardigan design which features interesting, lovely cables. The cardigan is knitted from top down, the construction incorporates saddle shoulders into contiguous sleeve shaping (depeloped by Susie Myers, SusieM on Ravelry).

The pattern includes instructions for both short and long cardigan versions with long or short sleeves.
