MidMitten Designs has teamed up with knitting friend Lisa Adcock of Splash of Color Yarns to create a special treat for knitters.

The limited-edition kit includes a medium project bag from MidMitten Designs featuring the popular vinyl window that lets you see what’s inside.

The yarn, dyed to coordinate with the yarn balls in the fabric, consists of five mini skeins, each 92 yards for a total of 460 yards of 80% Merino and 20% nylon. Color names are Peppermint Fusion, Wintergreen, Fruitcake, Ribbon Candy and Candy Cane — just to get you in the spirit.

Also included is a list of pattern options for cowls, hats, socks, shawls and other accessories — all available through Ravelry. The perfect gift for a knitter (or yourself!) there are limited quantities available through the Splash of Color Yarns Etsy shop.

A Swell Blin-Drift is worked from the top down and in the round with a steek.

This week’s update is brought to you by two Indie Untangled makers who have teamed up to bring you the Koi Pond kit.

Alisa Beer of KnitSpinQuilt and Debbie Bresler of Murky Depths Dyeworks both live and work in New York City, and, ironically, met on Ravelry.

Alisa and Deb have teamed up to create a exclusive, limited-edition kit that spoke to both of them. It features one skein of fingering-weight yarn, dyed by Deb, and one medium drawstring project bag, sewn by Alisa. In line with Alisa’s habit of donating to charitable causes, 10% of the purchase price of each kit will be donated to RAICES to help in the ongoing effort to reunite migrant children with their parents. If all the kits sell out they will donate an additional 5% to RAICES for the excellent work they are doing in these troubled times.

When Deb suggested an aquatic theme, Alisa went on a deep dive (hah!) looking for the perfect fabric. After some consultation, she ended up with a subtle dark teal with kelp foliage and flashes of tonal and bright orange fish. The tops of the bags are a coordinating geometric print that Alisa bought on a whim, and which ended up being just what was needed to pull it all together.

The bags are made of 100% Kona Cotton — a fabric that is slightly denser and sturdier than most quilting fabrics, which is Alisa’s go-to for her bags. The bags are long wearing and machine washable. The ties are grosgrain ribbon, and each bag has a key ring you can attach a lanyard or carabiner hook to. The medium size bag is Alisa’s best seller and at 10” x 7” x 3” is big enough to hold three skeins of yarn.

The yarn is Murky Depths Deep Sock, a squishy 80% Merino/20% Nylon Superwash 3-ply that’s perfect for socks but next to skin soft — suitable for garments and accessories. Each skein is 100 grams/400 yards. This exclusive colorway was developed specially to match the project bag. In keeping with Deb’s moody style, the yarn is dyed in multiple tonal layers with little pops of goldfish orange peeking through.

This kit will be available for preorder from October 5 until October 25, and will start shipping on November 25. We know that’s a bit of time to wait, but we need to be certain we can deliver the highest-quality product possible, so we’re setting a conservative timeline to be sure! Additional options exist to substitute a large drawstring bag or add an additional skein of the yarn.

Nerd Bird Makery is a small online shop — with a home base in Portland, Oregon — specializing in unique goods for crafters.

The motivation for launching this shop was the desire to create diverse and inclusive products representing knitters of all backgrounds. Over the last year, we’ve been pretty fortunate to be able to donate some of the profits to causes we believe in, including women running in the midterm elections (Sharice Davids, Shireen Ghorbani and Lucy McBath), the ACLU and World Relief, an organization that works with refugees.

Our shop is currently stocked with enamel pins, apparel, totes and paper goods, including art prints, greeting cards and gift tags.

Interested in seeing our products in person? We have products in select local yarn shops across the U.S. and we will also be at Indie Untangled in the Canon Hand Dyes booth.

Check out the photo of my newest crochet project! Using my The Shape – Michael Myers themed yarn. I made a bobble stitch beanie!

Our journey began when we, the Schowens, found ourselves at my grandmother’s house in the charming town of Iron Bridge, Ontario. Marian Norlena Rutledge was a multitalented, hard working woman. She played the steel guitar, was a trapper, rock collector, quilter, leather maker, knitter, gardener and mother of seven.

As we waded barefoot through her carefully tended garden, now ours, we were flooded with her innovative ideas, inspiration and love. Marian was a true hard worker. Thank you for your inspiration, boundless energy and spirit that guide us.

I love working with indie dyers because they inspire me towards more creativity. So, when The Fiber Seed approached me with their Swifties program, I jumped at the chance to work with them. Swifties are patterns that are mostly single skein patterns that are designed to be fun and fast to knit up. I started swatching to see what I could come up with and struck upon something that grabbed my attention as I hope it grabs yours.

It started as a top down triangle, but I decided to do something a little unorthodox. Instead of mirroring the lace pattern at the spine I decided to see what it looked like if I simply worked the same shaping on both sides of the spine, and it turned out to be magic! The straight rows of lace look like they are going every which way when in fact they are running in the same direction within the panel — it’s just that the panels are oriented differently. This led me to want to also make a three-panel version, which yielded a 3/4 square shawl. I kept the lace simple and geometric because I wanted this lace shawl to be able to handle crazy variegation to highlight one of The Fiber Seed’s beautifully multicolor yarns.

Realizing that I had two shawls to knit gave me the opportunity to do something I have always wanted to do. The Fiber Seed does this really cool and unique thing in that they dye the same colorways using different techniques. What that means is that the colorway has a set combination of colors but the dye genius there combines them in different ways. For the two-panel, top-down triangle version I worked with the color Which Witch Kaleidoscope and for the the three-panel, 3/4 square version I used Which Witch Half Speckled. You can see that they came out very differently, but I think both are beautiful. Of course the shawl will work in any of their solids, semisolids, speckled, dipped or besprinkled colorways and I cannot wait to see how they all look!
