This well-known quote from Elizabeth Zimmerman resonates during this increasingly combative time. Knitting gives our souls the space to heal, to reflect, and to find peace. These moments of quiet contemplation renew our strength and prepare us once more for the struggles of daily life.

Mauri Tau means calm or serene in Te Reo Mãori, though I personally understand it as “settling of the soul.” This top-down yoke pullover features an eye-catching yet simple slip-stitch motif to create a soothing knitting experience. Even if you put it down for a while, it will be quite easy to see where you left off! The simple motif also allows you to use your more variegated yarns to knit it up and still not lose the beauty of the stitch pattern.

The abundance of calming stockinette allows the pattern to be easily adjusted at the body for length and waist shaping. You can even add extra flourishes at the sleeves and hem of the pattern if you like.

Join us July 10-14, 2026 on a knitting tour to explore old Montreal, with sightseeing, shopping, knitting, and more. Montreal is the largest city in the Quebec province, with its cobblestone streets in Old Montreal and historic architecture. Known for amazing food and culture, Montreal is like stepping into France without crossing the Atlantic. We will visit the iconic Notre Dame Basilica, take in some art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, explore a culinary adventure by taking a Montreal food walking tour, and visit a farmer’s market for a French shopping experience. Montreal has incredible yarn stores that we will visit, including La Maison Tricotee and Les Garçons Boutique. Knitting classes will consist of creating knitwear inspired by our travels, all levels of knitting can be accommodated. Our popular “Day to Night” rolags are restocked! Part of the Woodland Tweed collection, these are SW Merino with a touch of tussah silk and gold banana thread.

I made a small sample spinning one rolag end to end for each of two singles, then plied them together, matching the colours for a simple 2ply. They were spun semi-woolen on my Lendrum wheel. So many ways to spin rolags! You could spin as I did, end to end repeatedly, for a distinct small repeating stripe. You could spin them matching pink to pink and blue to blue to make those stripes longer. You could create a fractal-ish yarn by staggering the singles. You could pull them apart and pool the colours, mix or ply them with another fiber… There are endless possibilies. If you spin some “Day to Night,” we’d love to see it!
