August’s Subscriber Inspiration colorways are based on a photo newsletter subscriber Melanie sent me, of a gorgeous Autumn-hued mandala. It made me think of the ancient Silk Road, rich tapestries and silks. And, of course, the beauty of Autumn in the eastern United States (and I don’t know about you, but I am ready for Fall!!).

After looking at Melanie’s photo for a while, I knew it was the one to use for August, as summer comes to an end and autumn is on the horizon. Evenings are cooling off, and there’s a crispness to the air on some mornings (not today, though!) that tells me Autumn is definitely on its way.

“Tamrin” is based on the palest colors in the mandala. It’s named for the Tamrin Basin, in Northwest China, made up part of the Silk Road route.

“Taklamakan” draws from the rich golden hues, and is named after the desert which dominates most of the Tamrin Basin.

“Kashgar Market” is based on the rich chili red-orange in the mandala, and is named for the colorful markets along the Silk Road.

Lastly, “Jingdezhan” draws from the muted teal in the mandala, and is named for the kiln responsible for the highly reconizable ceramics of China c 1300-1340.

All four colors are available for pre-order now through August 30. Then I’ll get busy dyeing them up, and plan to ship by September 15-20, 2018. Just in time to officially welcome Autumn to the Northern Hemisphere!

And hey, don’t forget! If you’re a newsletter subscriber (link on my website), send me an inspiration photo for September. It can be a photo you’ve taken, or something you’ve come across online. If I choose your photo, you’ll get a free skein of yarn in your special color!

Happy Almost-Autumn! Woohoo!!

You Can’t Take The Goth Outta The Girl!

Well, you can’t. Amirite? I’m right. If you’ve been one of my Groovies from the very beginning, you’re probably shocked to see a colorway like our new Goth on your screen. “This can’t be Groovy Hues,” you might be saying. Ah, but it is! I wanted to do an atypical Halloween colorway this year. I’ve always done something black and orange with some green and purple. I’m over that. I wanted you to have a yarn that you can use ANY day of the year without anyone giving you the side-eye. And, let’s face it. We’re all a little bit goth when it comes down to it. This colorway sold out through and through at our last trunk show at the destination LYS Do Ewe Knit, and now it is available in the online shop for the first time in FIVE bases, including luxury YAK!

It also seems that you want your pumpkin spice, and you want it NOW!

I’m pretty basic. I can admit it. In fact, I EMBRACE it. “Waiting For My Pumpkin Spice Prince” has sold out every time I’ve ever released it in its usual tweed. You have begged for me to make it in some new bases, and I’m being as accommodating as possible! I have obliged. What am I, if not flexible? It came out so beautifully on the not-so-usual bases that I should listen to all of you far more often. Again, the rich, darker yak is my favorite, but the DK and Cuddly sock are just as awesome.

Some yarns from the Yoga Collection have been restocked. Om Shanti is amazing on the laceweight, and you absolutely need to check out Drishti. It pairs perfectly with the new Goth colorway for this week for any contrasting colorwork!

I’ll be in Spain from the 1st through the 9th, but expect some amazing things from Groovy Hues when we return! Shop will remain open while we are gone. All orders before we leave will ship before we leave. Orders during that week will ship when I am back!

It’s that time of year again! I don’t know about you but I absolutely love fall. The Hudson Valley always looks so beautiful when the leaves begin to change, the apples become ripe and a chill can be felt in the air. Each year I love creating new fall and Halloween inspired colors for the shop. And it’s also the time of year when I like to bring back my tweed yarn bases. This year you will see lots of new colors, tonals, OOAKs and even a few colors from last year.

Starting tomorrow, August 26th at 10 a.m. EDT, you will find all of these items and more in the Fall into Halloween Collection on the website.

Happy Crafting 🙂
Julia

This summer has been a giant heap of crazy for me. If you’re one of my newsletter subscribers, you know both my kids went away to college last week (my son to James Madison University, as an incoming junior, and my daughter as a freshman to Duke University), my husband and I are in the process of splitting up and I’m not yet sure where I’ll be come 2019. So, big changes! It’s all scary-sad-exhausting-exhilarating. Such a gamut of emotions going on over here these days.

There were times this summer when I was so frazzled and exhausted, I couldn’t even knit. When I did, I needed something relaxing and uncomplicated, something that would keep my hands busy while my brain could do it’s own thing. This scarf is the result, so I’ve aptly named it Stream of Consciousness.

Stream of Consciousness is designed in sections of garter stitch and striped garter stitch, with sections of textured stitches mixed in. It’s knit on the diagonal, so the only “hard” part is remembering to increase on one side and decrease on the other, every other row. And pay a little bit more attention in the textured stitch portions.

I’ll admit I even messed that up here and there. Forgot to increase or decrease, knit too many rows of one color here and there …

But it’s all about having fun and relaxing with your knitting. Knit too many rows in a section? It’s no big deal, just keep on going. Switch sections up if there are some you like more than others, and knit until you run out of yarn. Use one, two, three, four, or even more colors! Use up all your leftover scraps! Leave sections out to make it shorter if the length is longer than you like (and it’s pretty long as designed – I may have gone just a bit too stream of consciousness 😉 ). Swap out the DK for fingering weight for a lighter weight scarf, or choose worsted or bulky to knit a more substantial shawl (just be aware yardage requirements will change if substituting yarn).

This design is meant to be a starting point for your own unique accessory. You can even leave the end a diagonal for a different look, and not worry about the final decrease section. It’s all about having fun with your knitting, relaxing, and putting your own unique spin on it.

I think it’s a perfect pattern for knitting while watching kids’ fall sports, play practices and other activities. Also perfect for watching TV or any activity where your attention is split, and you don’t want to be knitting something you need to be constantly looking at or checking. With all the complications in life these days, I’m all about comfort knitting.

I have loads of great colors available on my Andromeda yarn base, which is a fabulous DK weight single ply superwash Merino, which I’ve linked to this post. It’s soft and lofty — knit yourself a scarf in this yarn, and you’ve knit yourself a wonderfully soft hug!

“Stream of Consciousness” is available on Ravelry.

Bronze is the name of the game this week-and I think you’ll find a few new favorites in this collection! From Dragonflies to Frosted Oceans, you’ll find rich, warm colors to showcase your luxurious knits. Which one are you over the moon for?

If you would like to see these pins in person, you’re in luck! I travel to events from coast to coast. Check out the Events page on my website for the full lineup. The most recent event was Michigan Fiber Festival. This is the most fun I’ve had at a fiber festival. They had kids and sheep in costume parading around the festival, among many other adorable and fascinating entertainments. Check out the event recap on my blog for pics and videos!

Have you ever matched your knitting to a project bag? Have you ever bought yarn based on your favorite movie or holiday? Ever posted a picture on instagram of your coordinating mug, tea, yarn and book? I feel you! We crafters love a good crossover, right? Well, for all you crafters that, like me, are also avid readers I am thrilled to announce the pre-order for my limited-edition colorway inspired by Jodi Picoult’s latest novel “Spark of Light.” (Full disclosure: Jodi is my sister-in-law and graciously allows me to turn her books into yarn.) Last year I released a limited-edition colorway for the debut of her musical “Between the Lines,” and you may not know that my popular Storyteller colorway is based on her novel of the same name.

Pre-Orders for the “Spark of Light” colorway will go live on my website at 10am EDT on Saturday, 8/25 and will remain open until Monday 8/27 at 10am EDT or until they sell out. You will be able to choose either my Fuse Merino Singles or Fuse Sock base and all orders will ship on or before September 25th, in time for the book’s launch on October 3rd. The colorway is a surprise, but it will include all of the beautiful colors from the book cover. The best part is every purchase automatically enters you for a chance to win a SIGNED hard copy of the book!! The book deals with issues surrounding reproductive rights in America, so I feel it’s fitting to donate $5.00 of each skein sold to Planned Parenthood in support of women’s access to healthcare. “Spark of Light” is a limited-edition colorway and will not be dyed again, so make sure to get yours during the update this weekend!

Saturday’s update will also include sweater quantities of my Fuse Luxury Fingering base. For this update I focused on neutrals and colors that can be combined to make the perfect Rhinebeck sweater. The yarn combos in the above photos are: 1) River and Verdigris as seen in @knitosophy’s gorgeous Shusui Shrug. 2) Brooklyn Heights and Hinterland. 3) Smokey Eye and Dusk. 4) Black Pearls and Fairy House.

As always, thank you so much for browsing my shop giving my yarn a try!!!

Asylum Fibers is hosting a KAL/CAL in collaboration with Kristy Glass of Kristy Glass Knits and Michele Costa of Stitch and Hustle.

Kristy is best known for her “Tell me about your Rhinebeck Sweater” video, so it’s especially fitting that this knit and crochet along will culminate in a fun group photo at the New York Sheep and Wool Festival. If you can’t make it but would like to be included in Kristy’s video, you can send her a photo.

Michele designed two shawl patterns for this KAL/CAL. Unicorn Kounty is a knit pattern that’s simple enough for beginners, but allows a lot of room for interpretation for adventurous knitters. Unicorn County is the crocheted version and looks very similar. It’s extra special that both knitters and crocheters can participate in this together, and I’ve already seen quite a few double dippers! Both patterns are available on Ravelry.

The original kit for what I’ve been calling the “Unicorn Along” has colors curated by Kristy and adorable unicorn themed stitch markers as well as a limited edition project bag. There are just a few of these kits left from Stitch and Hustle.

For those looking to break the mold, I’ve put together some other color combos, using the same sparkle DK base as the original kit, and they will be available at 7 p.m. EST, Friday, August 24th.

If you can join us, share your progress using #kgkunicornalong!

P.S.: I can’t wait to see you at the Indie Untangled Trunk Show! Look forward to a very special pattern and kit collaboration with Lavendar Lune Yarn Co. and Mina Philipp, aka Knitting Expat on Youtube. There will be mohair involved!

Our next hand-dyed yarn update goes live on our website www.edencottageyarns.com on the 29th of August at 8 p.m. UK time.

Yarns included will be: Titus 4ply (75% Superwash Merino, 25% mulberry silk)

Titus 4ply is a lovely, luxurious blend of Superwash Merino and mulberry silk. The silk gives it a gorgeous shine as well as strength. It is ideal for all sorts of projects, from shawls to garments and everything in between. It washes well in the machine, and because silk gives it strength it can take a lot of use — it’s great for socks if you are unsure about pure wool yarns being hard wearing enough (just watch your tension so you don’t get drapey socks!).

All the colours will be posted in the Facebook event page and a flickr album for you to plan your purchases; look out for our colour combination and knit/crochet project inspiration posts, too.

As always, our updates can sell out really quickly so please just be aware that there might be a lot of competition for skeins and you’ll need to be quick on the day. I don’t want to panic you, it’s just something to be aware of!

As Fall slowly starts to creep into most of the Northern Hemisphere, we at QCC Yarn are still in the midst of summer and will be for a few more months. In order to make it feel more like the seasons are changing, we have started to dye up some autumnal and Halloween colors.

In addition to the new colors, we now have three new yarn bases available: Floofy Cat, Forlorn Cat and Cat-Mandu.

Floofy and Forlorn Cats are 2-ply fingering weight yarns, with 400 yards per 100g. Floofy Cat is 80% SW Merino/20% nylon. Forlorn Cat is 80% SW British BFL/20% nylon.
Cat-Mandu is a 3-ply fingering weight yarn with 436 yards per 100g. It’s 70% SW Merino/20% yak/10% nylon.

Cat-Mandu is a rather special yarn. It has a natural grey base, due to the yak fiber; when dyed, it creates wonderfully deep, rich colors. These colors are only available on the Cat-Mandu base, unlike our other colorways, which can be dyed on any of our other bases.
