There has been a serious shop update at Cedar Hill Farm Company! New colorways have been added to nearly every available base, especially to Rocket Sock and Traveler, because sock knitting is in full swing and Socktober is on the horizon. You’ll love our selection of self-striping and multi-colored yarns that not only work up like a dream in your hands, but are also completely colorfast and machine washable.

We have also begun carrying kits for two patterns: All About That Curve (ankle socks with a Sweet Tomato Heel) and Inverse Mitts (fingerless stranded color work mitts). Each kit contains notions necessary for pattern completion. Choose your colorways or let us do it for you. Both kits create perfect accessories for the much-anticipated cooler weather of Autumn.

In addition to all of the new yarns, we also have plenty of new project bags to choose from. Our ever-popular two-grommet bags are perfect for small take-along projects and fit easily inside a purse, tote, or backpack. Our set-in zipper design allows you to keep your project tucked safely inside the bag without the worry of catching your yarn in the the zipper. Our sweater-size bags feature and nylon webbing wristlet and are just the right size for taking your sweater project on an outing. Both types of project bags are completely machine washable/dryable and are fully lined with no visible seams.

Finally, a new shop section has been added: Needles & Such. Beginning in September, Chiaogoo Red Lace needles and other needle favorites will be available, as well as a variety of other knit-knacks like fun project keepers and stitch marker sets, including the full collection of Dr. Who project keepers.

Stop by the shop today to see what’s new and replenish your stash or pick up a few holiday gifts (because you’re already getting a jump on your gift list). Knitting season is definitely upon us!

Let’s make yarn! I’ll provide all the materials and equipment for the beginning handspinner as we explore the transformation of fleece into yarn. We’ll start with a washing a raw fleece and learn the technical details of fiber preparation. At the wheel, we see how twist and ply affect a finished yarn, and we’ll experiment with a variety of fibers, from breed-specific roving, to camelids and silks. No experience necessary. Class size limited to 6.

After the class, the studio will be open to the public from 3-5 p.m. I’ll be demonstrating Eco-print natural dyeing with botanicals on silk scarves in the studio, and my pet Shetland sheep will be thrilled to show off their tricks (eating grass and, well, eating grass).

If you’re not able to make it this weekend, learn more about and register for these upcoming fall and winter classes at the Middle Brook Fiberworks website:

Thursday, November 10 – Dyeing for Yarn
Sunday, November 13 – Begin to Spin
Thursday, January 26 – Spinning for Texture
Thursday, February 23 – Eco-print Silk Scarves

The Polyxena Shawl uses a half-pi construction, which doubles the number of stitches after each section. The construction is well-suited to showing off gradient yarn, and the final section is adjustable based upon how much yarn you have available. Although the name Polyxena refers to a character from the story of the Trojan War, the “poly” part of the name means “many,” which refers to the gradient or color-changing yarn used in this design.

Designed specifically for the Jumbo Sock Garden Party Cake from Art-by-Ana, the pattern includes instructions for three sizes based upon how much yarn you have (463 yards, 555 yards, and 693 yards).

Karen and Ana are co-hosting a KAL for the shawl. The KAL will run from September 15-November 15. For more details, visit their Ravelry group.

The newest yarn club for Round Table Yarns is currently open through September 15 for subscriptions. This four-month yarn club is based upon the Arthurian story of the poisoned apple. Guenevere has been accused of poisoning a knight and will be burnt at the stake if she is found guilty. Did she do it? Will she be found guilty or innocent? What will happen to Arthur’s court? Find out as you receive part of the story in each of the four shipments.

Each month, you’ll receive a different yarn base with a special club colorway (exclusive to the club for at least three months) inspired by that month’s portion of the story; both base and color will be a surprise. You’ll receive a postcard with the story in each shipment as well as at least one special surprise gift through the course of the club. You will also be invited to participate in the club’s KAL/CAL (and possibly win some prizes) and will receive a list of recommended patterns for that month’s yarn.

Payment for the yarn club can be all up front (for a slightly reduced cost) or through four monthly installment payments. You can sign up for one, two, three, or four skeins of yarn per month. Shipping is available worldwide, with cost determined by location.

Trust us: you haven’t experienced true luxury till you’ve tried Paco-vicuña! Paco-vicuña are a cross between alpacas and vicuñas and have existed for some time in small quantities in Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina, with very few currently in the United States. Paco-Vicuñas have super-fine fiber like the wild vicuña, but with somewhat longer and denser fleece like the alpaca.

We’ve just added Paco-vicuña yarn and fiber to our online store. We work with a Colorado farm called Jefferson Farms to source the highest quality fleece and fiber! Choose from several natural colors in Grades 0 and 1 here in our online store.
