For some reason, I never tire of variegated yarn, especially when combined with a nice solid to tone it down. I wanted to show you two designs that are both simple, “beach takers” as I call them. You’ll quickly get the hang of them and can dodge sand and sunscreen as you sit under your umbrella and take breaks to boogie board!
Both require 2 skeins of sock/fingering yarn (any brand is fine.)
Painted Windows is a boomerang shaped shawl and Rainbow Warrior is a top down-crescent shawl.
When we announced our new house colors last month, we hinted that more was yet to come. This month, we are pleased to unveil 5 gorgeous new limited edition colorways from MJ yarns which are available on our popular Tibetan Dream sock yarn base, as well as an exciting option we’re calling Big Bijou Bliss.
Big Bijou Bliss (or BBB for short) is a worsted-weight version of our well-loved Bijou Bliss sport weight yarn, and both are a soft and springy blend of 50% Tibetan yak and 50% Cormo wool. Each skein has 160 yards, which is perfect for lots of small projects such as hats, fingerless gloves and more.
BBB is a limited run yarn base, which means that once it’s gone, it’s really, truly gone! We think that these gorgeous variegated colors are the perfect way to get ready for fall (it’ll be here before you know it).

It seems that it’s been decades since I’ve gone SCUBA diving. Oh wait. It nearly has been! Well, simply because I haven’t been in the sea for a long time doesn’t mean that I’ve stopped thinking about it, or designing sea-themed knits like this crescent shawl, Great White. Even if being in the ocean when there’s a shark in the water nearby doesn’t make your heart sing, you can still knit up this lovely crescent scarf and be close to a shark… but not too close.
Summer show season has begun in England in earnest, and Third Vault Yarns is joining in the fun.
Our first show is Fibre East, taking place on the 30th and 31st of July at Redbourne community college in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. We’ll be in the Romney tent on grandstanding with a fantastic selection of yarn including our newest base, Gytha Worsted, a squishy buttery soft SW Falkland Merino offering. Just to make things extra special we’ve been collaborating with Kate Bostwick of Cowtown Knits to create some wonderful new kits.
The fantastic shawl you see here is Lambton Panes, our first collaboration, designed by Kate using a custom Cowtown colourway along with a solid. It has gone through several iterations in the design stage, but has morphed into the beautiful shawl you see above. Whilst the kits will be officially launched at Fibre East, you can still get your hands on one. I’ve come up with a range of different gradient colourways which can be paired with the new selection of solids all ready to be Pre-ordered ahead of Fibre East. If you’ll be attending the show you can pre-order your kit now ready to collect at our stand, to make sure that you don’t miss out, as there will be a limited number at the show. We offer a range of New Zealand hand-dyed 4ply Merino Superwash yarn dyed by me, Nicola, in a collection of 6 semi-solid colours, and our sock yarn (75% NZ Merino/25% Nylon) is randomly dyed with 8 colours to choose from.
Our patterns, also designed here in New Zealand, complement our yarn range. This spring, we are featuring two new luxury hand-dyed yarns of a 4ply weight, decadent blends of Yak & Silk and 100% New Zealand Alpaca.
Last years official Swiss Wulle Festival shawl was a big success… this year, we again offer a shawl kit for a beautiful and exclusive new design by Nadia Crétin-Léchenne, knit in Silky Swiss Gorgousness by Siidegarte — the “October Rendez-vous”!
