Showing needles and hooks

I’m an indie bag maker recently from Wisconsin, formerly from Pennsylvania, and I make everything myself.

The project bags I make are to carry around your knitting, crochet and spinning. I have many shapes, including box bags, pyramids, wedges and backpacks. I make a few bags that snap to hang on spinning wheels or looms in order to hold fiber or tools.

All of the bags are designed by me. I search far and wide for fabric and even have some that I print specifically for my business alone. I always have a variety of prints, some of which don’t stay around long. The fabric baskets and rope bowls are excellent to sit beside your wheel or loom to hold fiber or weaving supplies. I also make stitch markers to hold your place in knitting or crochet. I make orifice hooks for your spinning wheel and crochet hooks with fun handles. The crochet hooks are one of a kind as I play with clay and bake them on the hook. I also just recently have started to blend some different wools together to make batts for sale.
I love doing special orders and I’ve worked with other indie dyers to do collaborations of bags and yarn kits. Please feel free to message me to see about your own collaboration or bag made specifically for you. I also have items that I don’t generally sell online, but if you’ve seen them at a show and you’d like them, message me!

StarKnits was scheduled to vend at Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival in Pittsburgh, PA, March 20-22 and then at YarnCon in Chigago, IL, April 4-5. Both events were canceled due to COVID-19 and I applaud the organizers for being proactive about the health of our community. I’m using my time to take photos and do an update of epic proportions (at least for this one-woman business) starting on the 20th.

Drum roll please!

The Kings County Fiber Festival is an outdoor market for the fiber enthusiast! The setting is the historic Old Stone House of Brooklyn, located in picturesque Park Slope, on Saturday, October 12th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Aside from a variety of indie vendors — including dyers, felters, knitters, crocheters, quilters, spinners and weavers — the event will feature a talk and exhibit by crochet artist Nacinimod Deodee, moderated by textile developer Sahara Briscoe of Super String Theory Design.

We will also be collecting donations of handmade hats for the homeless.

Summer is upon us and the lambing season is finally done. If you are looking for a lightweight yarn to knit with this summer, our hand-dyed wool, linen and silk blend is perfect. I just finished Wave by Kristen Finlay with our wool, linen and silk blend and it knit up beautifully.

We are participating in the Save Em to Save Em Campaign and we have raw Shetland and Leicester Longwool as well as Leicester Longwool yarn. We will have Shetland yarn for the fall festival season.

If you are in the Dover, Pennsylvania area, give us a call and stop by and see the farm, our baby lambs, all the sheep and the shop, located on the farm.

Great Ocean Road Woollen Mill is a boutique spinning mill located in the hinterland of the Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia. We pride ourselves on being incredibly sustainable: 95% of our power comes from our solar setup and we wash only using rainwater and a low phosphate detergent, with the waste water keeping our orchard green and healthy. We source all our fibre directly off farmers, most of whom live within one hour of our property/mill. Our yarns have the lowest carbon footprint of any commercially produced yarn in Australia, about 225km from farm to scourer to us (the alpaca travels even less distance, being washed by us on site).

Our yarns are yarns with heart. They are small-batch runs, designed to highlight the amazing work Australia does in growing some of the best fibre in the world. The merino we use is 17.5 microns, making it incredibly soft and luxurious, ideal for next-to-skin projects, or just that lovely cuddle factor. All of our fibre is traceable and every yarn has a story behind it: who grew it, where it was grown and how it was transformed into yarn, ready for you to use and love.

Our business is the true definition of small business. It is just my husband, Nick, and I, Isabel, who do everything from sourcing the fibre, processing the fibre and selling the yarn. Every time someone buys our yarn they become part of our story. To find out more, get in touch and say G’day!

Did you know that My Mama Knits offers more than just gorgeous hand dyed yarns? Whether you are shopping for yourself, a good friend or getting to know a new fibre swap partner, you will find something sure to delight in our Needles, Notions, Gifts and Goodies section. There you will find a quirky selection of hand-sewn project bags made especially for us by Amelia X Joy, stitch markers in singles or themed sets, and hand made birch wood Socker’s Rules by Fleece Loved Products.

We also stock a range of HiyaHiya products perfect for the knitter, such as cute animal snips, glitter cable needles and short 9″ circulars in bamboo or steel. Need a birthday or gift card for that special fibre loving friend? We also have a range of stationary featuring luscious photos of knitting in nature and our yarn.

Come and check us out and find something you love.
