It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The first day of July can only mean one thing here at Forbidden Fiber Co – our Advent calendars go up for preorder! We work at these year-round to make sure it is the most fun box you open all year long.

Our 2021 Advent theme is Random Acts of Kindness. We feel that there can never be enough kindness in the world, and we want to do our part to spread it throughout our community. So accompanying each colorway (and each extra), will be a simple act of kindness that you can do for a friend, or even a stranger!

That said, we like to do our Advents a little differently. Instead of an Advent box with 24 (or 25) mini skeins of yarn, we like to shake it up a bit! First and foremost, we work with a knit and crochet designer to bring you an exclusive MKAL/MCAL pattern to go along with your yarn. It’s a little bit different each year, but this year is truly outstanding! We’re focusing on several smaller projects instead of one big wrap or shawl. The knitting patterns are designed by Afifa Knits, and the crochet patterns are designed by Katie Clark Crochet.

Our Advent Calendar this year features 25 wrapped gifts – 18 of them will contain a 25g skein of our Fortitude DK yarn (Superwash Merino), as well as a piece of this year’s MKAL/MCAL pattern. The other seven (7) packages are what we call “rest days,” where you have a chance to catch up on your project if you’ve fallen behind. December is a busy month and we want to make sure there’s no stress involved in this Mystery-along! Each “rest day” package will have a fun little extra for you to enjoy along with your stitching – some are knit/crochet related, and some are just fun! Most of them are handmade by our team at the FFC studio, and all of them are bigger and better than ever this year!

I truly think that this will be our best Advent Calendar yet. So preorder yours and join in the fun!

Hi, I’m Sophie, the dyer from Botanical Yarn, based in York, UK! I’ve created an aqua to lilac exclusive mini skein fade set especially for the Indie Untangled Across the Pond event this weekend. I’m a crazy plant lady, and at last count have 316 house plants, and I’m inspired by unusual plants and flowers to dye my colourways, hence some of my unusual names for my yarns!

I also love mini skeins and the possibilities that they can bring. The exclusive fade set that I’ve created comes with 10 minis, which can be used to make various projects, including shawls, hats and garments, or a blanket to keep you warm whilst crafting!

I will be live during Indie Across the Pond from 3 p.m. CET this Friday, Saturday and Sunday — make sure you’re registered, as you will also get a coupon code for 10% off purchases over £75 ! — and feel free to book a personal shopping appointment with me, as I would be very happy to help you pick colours for your next project! You can follow me on instagram here.

Trying to decide on an interchangeable needle set reminds me of buying a home. Okay, maybe it’s not quite the same level of commitment, but in both cases, you’ll be living with the decision for a long time, and discovering the little flaws as you go. When I decided to add a few brands of interchangeable needles to my shop, I did a lot of research, and I figured other knitters could use it to, so I created a chart that compares 14 brands of needles. This chart gives you a side-by-side look at the most important elements of the best-known interchangeable knitting needles systems. While this may not offer enough detail for you to decide which kit is right for you, it will at least help you narrow it down to the systems you’d like to know more about. You’ll find it – along with some other posts about interchangeables – over on my blog.

In the end, I decided to stock ChiaoGoo metals needles, and KA Seeknit (based in Japan) bamboo needles to start my needle shop, but I am always open to answering questions and helping knitters find their dream needles, even if it leads you away from my shop.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer Mystery Yarn Club is finally here! I’ve been wanting to share my love of Buffy for a long time now, and what better time to kick it off than Jilly & Kiddles’ second birthday, right? This club will be centered around the slayers of the series: Buffy, Kendra, and Faith AND fiber. I can’t wait to show you what I’ve cooked up and how everything ties in together as we explore these iconic characters from one of my very favorite TV shows.

This will be a three month mystery yarn club, and shipping within the U.S. is included. Each month you’ll receive a skein of fingering weight yarn, a set of custom Buffy/Yarn-themed goodies by DKGraham, and some other fun extras I’ve been planning out for a while. If you’ve ordered one of my clubs before, you know I always strive to provide a great value, and this is no exception. Let’s have some fun merging two awesome things: our love of fiber and our favorite cult classic series! Orders open 2/4 and close on 2/22; after that they will no longer be available. There will be a limited number of club memberships available and orders will close early if they sell out.

Each of the three monthly club installments includes:

— 100-gram skein of an EXCLUSIVE Buffy-inspired colorway in Jilly & Kiddles fingering weight yarn (bases may vary each month)
— A different custom THEMED notions set each month by DKGraham
— TWO more surprise themed extras
— Shipping is INCLUDED within the U.S.
— Each monthly shipment will be valued OVER $50

If you are outside of the U.S. and would like to order, I’m happy to help with that! Please email me directly for an estimate of additional shipping costs prior to purchasing.

Shipping dates for the club:

1st Shipment: Buffy kit ships April 15th
2nd Shipment: Kendra kit ships May 15th
3rd Shipment: Faith kit ships June 15th

This club has been in the works for quite some time, and I’m so excited to share it with you! I’ve spent a long time finding all the perfect items to include in the shipments and I know you’re going to love it. Plus, Kirstan of DKGraham really knocked it out of the park with her custom-themed goodies, because she’s a huge fan of the show too! She REALLY knows how to incorporate yarny fun with pop culture and it wows me every time. We’re totally geeking out about it. You don’t want to miss out on this one. And if you aren’t familiar with the show, no worries — I share two places you can watch it on the product page in my shop. Take a peek now before you forget…

I’m excited to share two new cases and a bit of re-branding! The Knitter’s Book Case is now called The Original Case, and is joined by two new designs, The Flip Case and The Stretch Case. All three are exclusively offered in leather, with a wool felt lining in the Flip Case, and are now listed for preorder, closing November 9. (They’ll ship in early December to arrive in time for the holidays in the USA and Canada.)

The Flip Case stores up to eight needle tips, and has two pockets for cables. I love this design, because it really is so flexible. It can lay flat as an add-on inside your Original Case and transform into a convenient needle wallet by folding over. Thanks to a simple elastic closure, the fold line can move depending on the length of the needles you store in it.

The Stretch Case is inspired by classic pencil cases that strap around binders and notebooks. I started working on this when I was using my Original Case on road trips (sigh, remember those?) I really wanted access to my notions without having to open the whole case up – plus it allows you to store some bulkier items that don’t fit as well in the interior pocket of the Original.

The Original is offered in my usual Dark Brown and Deep Black, and a special edition Red. And just for this batch, I’m offering a custom embossed monogram in the centre front panel.

The Knitter’s Book Case has gotten an expansion pack!

Earlier this spring, I introduced the Knitter’s Book Case, designed to hold multiple sets of interchangeable needles and leave lots of room for extras. But what if slots for up to 24 needle tips just isn’t enough? Introducing the Knitter’s Brief Case. This versatile interchangeable needle case can work as a standalone or as an add-on for the larger Knitter’s Book Case. With two pockets for cables, a large zippered pouch for notions and slots for up to nine pairs of needle tips, the Brief Case expands the capacity of the Knitter’s Book Case by more than a third, and has two slots devoted to really big needles – up to 15 mm.

Even when completely full, the Brief Case folds easily inside a jammed Book Case, adding only about 1″ to the width.

The Brief Case is also ideal for putting together a project-specific toolkit. Working on a pattern that calls for two needle sizes, three cord lengths, snips, stitch holders and a darning needle? Move them from your larger case to the Brief Case for the duration of the project.

Just like the Book Case, the Brief Case is made from 100% wool felt and suede and is cut and assembled by hand in Montreal.

Introducing the Knitter’s Book Case, an interchangeable needle case that is designed for the knitter with a large collection of tools. With ample space for multiple needle sets and essential notions, you can store everything in one place. Unlike a needle roll, the Knitter’s Book Case stays flat and keeps its shape even when full. It’s about the size of an iPad or a notebook (hence the name) and fits easily into most bags and purses.

A few highlights:
Slots for up to 24 pairs of interchangeable needle tips
Maximum needle size 10mm, can store needle tip lengths from 3.75″ to 6″
Four pockets for cables – sort by length or by brand
Large zippered pocket for notions and add-ons like connectors and stoppers – will even fit crochet hooks and DPNs up to 8″ long
Magnetized area for stitch markers & darning needles – strong enough to keep even large items like scissors in place, even when you are on the go

The cases are handmade in small batches in Montreal from the finest materials. The exterior and lining are 100% wool felt, an ecological and sustainable fabric that meets OEKO-TEX standards for safety and the interior pockets are suede, ideal for keeping needles firmly in place – no more wandering needle tips!
