One for Jaipur Shawl

This design was created for Rowan Tree Travel – 2025 Textiles & Treasures of India, Jaipur Edition. It’s a simple knit-while-you-travel project for the participants of this trip while they explored some of the northern cities of India.

It is an asymmetric wrap worked in one piece. The design uses simple garter stitch bands interspersed with lace rows to create a breezy wrap.

This news series, “expansion takes its toll,” is inspired by the mess and bared bones of some local toll road work and the general, beautiful stone of the area. Expansion, Whitestone Blvd, Limestone, and Strata fiber are all tweed non-SW US Shaniko wool. Unearthed and Look Up! are non-tweed versions of the same.

When you’re a natural dyer, it’s so easy to get swept up by all the possibilities. What color will this plant make? How about this bark? Next thing you know, there’s been a yarn takeover!

That explains how I ended up with 52 different colors of naturally-dyed Meadow Rustic Sport — WAY too many to manage. So it’s time to free up some space.

Join Row House & Tanis Gray for Camp Knit-a-way!

Row House is hosting a special weekend on Laurel Island in East Hampton, Connecticut from September 18-20, 2026. The event will take over the whole island for Camp Knit-a-way, and attendees will have access to the island’s amenities, including hammocks (!), kayaks, SUP, pedal boats, swimming, volleyball, bocce, giant Jenga, private and group decks, board games, yard games, sauna, and more. There will be plenty of knitting (or crocheting) time, as well as s’mores and a fire pit at night, group and weather willing. The weekend includes all meals, drinks, and snacks, catered by a private chef.

Tanis Gray will be joining Camp for a second year because she’s awesome, and everyone had such a good time. She’ll be teaching workshops on knitting a beaded hat and patchwork bargello earrings, and your gift bag will have a kit for the hat you’ll be knitting.

Why is a natural dyer promoting undyed yarn?

Sometimes, we’re so focused on all the gorgeous yarn colors, the inherent beauty of the original wool color gets overshadowed. The different shades of cream, gray and brown that make up a yarn base become muted. And you lose some sense of the fiber’s characteristics, too.

Enter exhibit A: Corriedale Gotland DK. This undyed blend of two different wools has a soft beauty that doesn’t need dye to shine.

White Corriedale wool has a long staple and lovely crimp, giving the yarn a natural springiness. Gray Gotland is an old, long-haired breed originating in Sweden. Long, lustrous locks produce wonderful drape and subtle sheen. Blended together, the yarn is slightly heathered with a light halo.

Wondering what to make with fantastic Corriedale Gotland DK? One suggestion is the striking Braids of Grass pullover by Ailbíona McLochlainn.
