Hi! I’m Chrystee of Play at Life Fiber Arts. I’ve been dyeing yarn and fiber on a small scale in Southeast Massachusetts since 2009. I spent many years juggling parenting duties, and working a day job while trying to keep my little yarnie business chugging along. I’m happy to still be at it and even happier to be able to pursue this as a full time gig now!

I focus on dyeing variegated and coordinating semisolid colorways on yarns and spinning/felting fibers. I especially love colorwork and fade sets, and I’m always coming up with new rainbows — brights, neons, dark, moody — I can’t get enough rainbows!

The Glow Gauge makes swatch measuring easy!

The nights are getting colder over here in Scotland and the end of the year is fast approaching. We’ve updated the shop with new colourways and yarns, including our non-Superwash and plant fibre bases. Since it’s that time of year, we’ve stocked our Baubles, which include a geeky yarn colourway and a little extra all wrapped up in a pretty box or fancy bauble to put on or under your tree or mantle.

We’ve also got our newest range of hand-dyed project bags, with the fabric colourways celebrating autumn, the Aurora, and watercolour paintings. Pattern of the Week – Koha Mittens

Pre-colonization and the advent of money, koha (gift, offering, donation) was the economic lifestyle in Te Ao Māori: a circular economy and redistribution of resources and valuables throughout the community.

Nowadays, giving a koha (in the form of money, goods or services) is the practice of bestowing an unconditional gift.

A koha best given is said to mirror the mana of both the giver and the recipient: what the giver is able to give, and the level of appreciation of the recipient.

The Koha Mitts feature a colorwork motif of the Kūmara plant (as identified by the jagged stripes). Someone who is very generous is said to have manaakitanga (hospitality), often demonstrated by the sharing of one’s food or resources with another out of aroha (love, compassion). To respect the mana of yourself and the recipient, this gift is best given to someone who exemplifies the qualities of the Giver Fibre Muse — someone who is selfless and seeks to help others AND is knitworthy!
