When we dream, our spirits take flight. We travel on feathers and clouds across the globe, to places that exist in our imagination, to the future and the past. Daydreams express our hearts’ deepest hopes. And for many of us, knitting brings us this opportunity to experience the sights, sounds, tastes, scents, and feelings. With each stitch, we bask in the enjoyment of it all.

Daydream is a shawl for those with wanderlust. This crescent shawl is worked bottom up, with short rows shaping the curve. Let your dreams select the yarn. Linen or silk yarn creates magnificent drape, shine and sheen that transports you to other worlds. Cotton gives you a soft touchstone to familiar ground. Wool cuddles you for trips to beautiful icy heights.

The Chrysanthemum Shawl, originally published in March 2016, is a collaborative piece between Amelia Putri, Indonesia’s first indie yarn dyer, and Aroha Knits. The Chrysanthemum flower represents optimism and joy, two values that both Amelia and I hold dear! May this shawl bring you joy and positivity, as well as beauty, to your handmade wardrobe!

This design features an all-over lace pattern (which looks more complicated than it really is) on a half-pi shawl construction. Meaning, you don’t have to worry about edge stitches or stitch count increases until you reach the end of the section. Each section of the shawl is knit “straight”, followed by a row of increases to form the shape. It’s a very accessible construction to those new to shawl knitting!

Can you smell the sea breeze?

When we think of shawls, we often envision warm wraps to cover ourselves during the chilly winter months. While this shawl can certainly serve that purpose (just use a wool-based fiber!), I designed the Taha Moana (Te Reo Māori for “Seashore”) shawl as a warm-weather accessory. This majestic and flowing shawl evokes images of moonlit moments by the sea or tranquil rest under the shade of palm trees overlooking sandy beaches.

The 3/4 shawl shape makes it easy to wear over the shoulders — much more practical than a triangular shawl at times — but if you prefer to knit a triangular version, instructions are provided for that modification! Four colours were used in the original sample, but instructions are included for creating a version with two or three colours as well.

With summer vacations and outside crafting opportunities on the horizon, a craft kit is the perfect bring along. Especially when the craft kit contains everything you need, it’s so easy to toss in your bag and craft on the road or on an airplane.

There are some great new kits in the shop at Red Hen Books. Just arrived are embroidery and beadwork kits from Kate Wyatt Fine Art. These are unlike any kits out there as they feature contemporary design using traditional stitches and materials. I have a blueberry and a strawberry beadwork embroidery kit for now but plan to add more designs. Also new in are natural dyed silk thread sets and a Boro Sewing Book kit from Cedar Dell Designs.

A very special new kit addition is from Min Amanne Designs. These kits feature traditional Palestinian Tatreez Cross Stitch, include all supplies, and come in eight different designs. I will be donating $10 from every kit to support World Central Kitchen in their efforts to provide meals in Gaza, one the biggest humanitarian threats right now.

Check out all the other craft kits and grab one for the road this summer! Sign up for my weekly newsletter for 10% off your first order!

Enjoy,
Anne

PS. Popular knitting books from Laine and Cozy Publishing have been restocked.

May is here and we are celebrating the start of Pablo Picasso’s Cubism era with a self portrait created in 1906. This yarn (and art) features browns, tans, and golds — the perfect variegated neutral colorway.

Orders are for skeins only — you must subscribe to get the fun stuff — and need to be placed by the end of the day Saturday, May 24th. They will be shipped between the 28th and the 2nd.

I’ve really enjoyed exploring fiber this year and couldn’t wait to do a small countdown for it. So this year I’m offering an Autumn Equinox Fiber Countdown!

Each box will have eight 1-oz bumps of fiber in coordinating cozy Autumn tones. You can open them all at once or count down the week leading up to the Autumn Equinox on September 22.

The fiber options for this box are Shaniko Silk, American Rambouillet, or a special limited Rambouillet and alpaca blend from Get Bentz Farms. Theresa runs a local solar powered mill and she makes it a goal to use MN- and Midwest-sourced fiber when possible. I’m so excited to collab with her for this box!

The boxes will only be available through Memorial Day, so don’t wait!

Join us for a knitting-filled murder mystery weekend in Denver, CO from November 14th to 16th, 2025! Our Founder, Cheryl, will be joined at the *skein of the crime* by the amazing Cecelia Campochiaro (the inventor of sequence knitting) to host you for the knitting portion of a weekend that requires both your sleuthing and knitting skills. We’ll be at the Halcyon Hotel in Denver, CO, in the fun Cherry Creek neighborhood. The murder mystery is for everyone (not just knitters/crocheters), so you can bring a non-knitter, if you’d like. For knitters (and crocheters!), we’ll be adding on plenty of fun, swag, and knitting time.

The murder mystery kicks off Friday, November 14th, at cocktail hour, and the murderer is revealed on Sunday, November 16th, at breakfast (we’ll also have a farewell lunch Sunday afternoon just for our crafty sleuths!).

You’ll need both the Murder Mystery Weekend package from the Halcyon Hotel and the Knitting Detective Package (that you purchase from Row House) to join us for the knitting portion. The Halcyon Hotel package includes two nights in the hotel, cocktail hour with heavy appetizers on Friday, three meals on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday, as well as the murder mystery entertainment. The Knitting Detective Package that you purchase from us includes a workshop with Cecelia, a gift bag with a kit of her latest shawl pattern in your choice of color, snacks on Friday, lunch on Sunday, a private knitting room, and more.
