Hey East Coast Folks! As you plan your summer vacations, why not plan a stop at the sweetest place on Earth: Hershey, Pennsylvania! Coming this summer, Kayla of Little Loopy Yarns will be opening a brick and mortar shop titled “The Underground Yarn and Books.” That’s right, yarn, books and coffee all in the same spot — what more could you ever want?

Kayla is thrilled to be the in-house dyer for the shop and would love to have you come in for a visit. With a focus on indie dyers and community building, The Underground will be a place that will leave you with all the internal and external warm fuzzies! To hear more of the story, check out the Kickstarter.

Kickstarter rewards include:

•An EXCLUSIVE COLORWAY dyed by Little Loopy, only to be dyed once for Kickstarter supporters, and never to be dyed again

•A private yarn-dyeing session with Kayla

•Naming a colorway after you and keeping it for the Little Loopy lineup of offerings!

It started with the thought: What if contemplation isn’t idle but essential?

In a world that values never-ending and highly-optimized productivity, sitting with unfocused thoughts — letting them meander, circle back, or dissolve entirely — feels contrarian.

Contemplation is (one of) capitalism’s antithesis: it’s slow, nonlinear, and inherently “unproductive.” Yet it’s also where we dream, problem-solve, and reclaim agency over our minds.

I know this intimately. During my years of burnout and mental health struggles, my brain’s timeline shrank to surviving this hour, never mind next week. Recovery came with an unexpected gift: the return of mental space to contemplate. To think beyond immediate survival. To play with ideas again.

The Contemplation Shawl is an homage to that long and transformative journey. It features an asymmetrical triangular shape with a textured garter stitch body and winding cable borders. This design encourages you to “make each stitch sweet,” resulting in a soft, squishy fabric that rewards slow and deliberate knitting.

The shawl starts at the top tip and begins with an intercrossing cable border, which works quite well as a meditative exercise in attention and awareness (you might want to shoo others out of the room, though!).

Once this border is established, the body expands into a rhythmic garter stitch, creating that iconic textured fabric that invites the squiiiiishhhhhh ‘n’ sniff. The final ribbed edge is finished with a polished tubular bind-off, providing seamless integration to balance the shawl’s ribbed stitch flow.

As you knit: Where will your mind wander? To a creative project left dormant? A boundary that needs guarding? A dream you’ve been too busy to water?

Protect that time fiercely. It’s your sacred space of agency and autonomy.

Spring is here, and it’s time for a refresh. I’ve taken my classic project bags and zhuzhed them up a little bit. I made them a little larger and added leather handles and magnetic snap closures. Of course, all the nice details of my classic project bags (which you can still find here!) remain: a hand-waxed, water-resistant canvas base, a fully finished lining with slip pockets, and a binder ring on a ribbon for your small tools and stitch markers. And like everything I offer, it was made entirely by me in my smoke-free, dog-friendly home.

I also have a group of medium classic project bags made from repurposed fabric samples that were on their way to the landfill before I rescued them. I hope you’ll agree that they’re far too pretty to throw away and that they make beautiful project bags.

There are also zipper pouches and lots of pretty handbags if you’re shopping for something pretty for Mom, too. I put lots of love and care into my bags, and I hope you’ll love them, too.

There’s something magical about a pattern that challenges you just enough while still feeling like a meditation. That’s exactly what I aimed for with the Puiaki Shawl — now available as a free gift for you.

This one-skein wonder (just 400-450yds of fingering weight!) features:

✔ A Japanese-inspired lace border adapted from Hitomi Shida’s exquisite stitch dictionary — those delicate twists and clusters create texture that will catch everyone’s eye
✔ Soothing short row shaping that builds the crescent naturally as you knit
✔ Perfect for when you’re on the go and want to take knitting with you.
✔ That one-skein wonder in your stash? Now could be the perfect time to use it!

Puiaki is Te Reo Māori for treasure, precious. Inspired by the Māori proverb “Whaia te iti kahurangi ki te tuahu koe me he maunga teitei” (“Aim for the highest cloud so that if you miss it, you will land upon a lofty mountain”), this pattern reminds us that these challenging stitches, like aspirations, naturally lead to rewarding destinations. Whether kept as a personal treasure or gifted to someone special, each Puiaki Shawl carries the quiet intention of handmade meaning.

You can access the pattern on my blog, The Practice of Fibre, and download it for free!

“Yes, this one is perfect,” I said to myself, when I found my Rivendell fingering and DK yarns.

It was exactly what I was looking for in a hand-dyed yarn base: non-Superwash, natural fibers with a woolly-wool feel that would work for almost any type of project, and that even the most discerning yarn snob (like me!) would love to knit with.

Rivendell is perfect, whether you’re knitting sweaters, shawls, socks, home goods… or just admiring your yarn stash.

Here are some things I love about this yarn:

It’s soft — There is something about the feeling of non-Superwash yarns that I just absolutely love. With Superwash yarns, the softness feels like a silky-smooth softness, but with non-Superwash yarns, the softness is more of a fluffy softness. It feels closer to the sheep and to all that I love about natural materials.

It’s durable — With its 4-ply, worsted-spun construction, this yarn is a durable all-natural option. I’ve used it for sweaters and shawls so far, including a summer cardigan for my 2-year-old (pattern in development), and I love the results every time. I’ve even gotten away with tossing it in the wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and not had to worry about felting.

It takes color beautifully — You can see for yourself in the photos above. I think many people associate non-Superwash yarns with more muted colors, but that is definitely not always the case. Many of the colorways I dye on this yarn are deep, rich, and saturated. I’m excited to try my hand with variegation and speckling at some point, but I’m trying not to get too far ahead of myself.

This base is available in fingering and DK weights, and I may be able add a worsted/Aran option in the future.

Here are the details:

Composition: 100% Non-Superwash fine (21.5 micron) Merino
Weight: available in fingering and DK weight, both 4-ply worsted spun
Fingering meterage: approx 400m (437 yards) per 100gm hank
DK Meterage: approx 225m (246 yards) per 100g hank

There are quite a few skeins currently in stock on my website, and I’ll be dyeing up more soon. If you’re dreaming of a project that feels like a refuge to Elrond’s house, the Last Homely House East of the Sea as depicted in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, Rivendell is ready to take you there.
