This week let’s talk about medium weight hand painted fingering weight yarn. Why? Because even though many have predicted that the sock-knitting craze would wane, it’s still going strong. And, if you are also a sock knitter who enjoys cables as much as I do, then you know that you just can’t get that crispness that a cable pattern demands in a 2-ply fingering weight sock yarn.

Enter Rocket Sock Medium. This 4-ply superwash wool yarn (that is NOT of the super scratchy variety) is exactly what light-weight cabled patterns demand! Hand painted for total OOAK uniqueness, Rocket Sock Medium holds its shape and gives your cables the raised crispness that you want, especially if you have plans to share pictures of your finished pair of socks or gloves on your favorite social media site.

You are in luck this week if the perfect sock yarn is what you’re searching for because there are plenty of new colorways in the shop to choose from! Some colorways, like Roller Derby, Wacky Duck, and Venetian, are hand painted multis in a collection of amazingly deep colors. Others are self-striping, including Sexy Cyclops, Pickles & Jam, and Solitude.

Check out Rocket Sock Medium and our many other yarns at www.cedarhillyarns.com because you ought to love the yarn you’re with!

I am so happy to introduce our new knitting project kit, the Queen Bee Leg Warmers. These adorable warmers are knit with one skein of super soft, washable, Luna Grey Fiber Arts Aspen Sport hand-dyed yarn. Knit in the round using double pointed needles, the cuff is knit with needles two sizes smaller than the body of the warmers to ensure a snug, secure fit. The highly textured honeycomb lace pattern is easy to memorize and fast to knit. Pattern includes instructions for three sizes: 1-3 years, 4-6 years & 7-9 years.

The best part? Through May 10th, you can get the pattern for free (a $4 savings) when you purchase a Queen Bee kit using coupon code QueenBeeMay at checkout.

As an artist, I am constantly finding new ways to represent the knitted form in a creative way. Recently, I worked on a collaborative mural project and was lucky enough to have some great inspiration. Part of the mural was a cityscape and I decided it needed a “yarn bomb” behind it. Upon completion I realized that I could do the same thing on a smaller scale and hunted around for some vintage postcards to experiment with.

If you’re a knitter, or just like funky things, than these are for you. Vintage postcards that I have “Yarn Bombed” with various painted ropes and balls. The whole idea is that when you look at the cards, you see something is off, not right, or even just silly. Stratigically placing my painted motifs within the pre-defined landscape, the once old imagery begins to come to life.

Perfect as a humorous gift or to keep for yourself, you are sure to smile every time you look at these images.

New to the shop are five new Rocket Sock colorways that will make you say “I need that!” These new colorways include: Soul Sistah, Poodle Skirt, Might Be Magic, Lizard Lips, and Tea Cake. I’m really into bold, bright colors right now, and I can’t decide if I’m more in love with Lizard Lips (self-striping) or Soul Sistah. Also self-striping are Poodle Skirt and Salt Marsh, depending on your stitch count, of course. The Carolina Fiber Fest was so good to me that I sold pretty much sold out of this yarn line, so you can expect to see the return of more popular colorways of the past (coming soon: Firefly, Supergirl, and Tuscan) plus whatever I can dream up between now and then as I rebuild my stock.

In case your are new to the shop or to this particular line of yarn, Rocket Sock is the perfect summer-weight sock yarn! 75% superwash Merino, 25% nylon, this ultra-high twist 2-ply is the perfect choice for socks and lace wear in the summer months. It’s light, it has an amazing elasticity, and it both washes (machine wash) and wears well with little to no pilling. If you are a sock knitter, this is a great choice for those times when you want to break away from the same ol’ square heel flap with a round heel turn and go for short rows, garter stitch, hat-top heels, or square heels — you won’t get that bulkiness under the heel that you will with a traditional 4-ply yarn. As well, unlike less elastic, more loosely-spun fingering weight yarns, Rocket Sock stays where you put it on the blocking board and doesn’t stretch out or sag with wear.

And heads up: I took advantage yesterday of the first sunny day in 2 weeks and I spent all afternoon dyeing up a new round of Rocket Sock Medium in seven knock-your-socks-off colorways. Those should be hitting the shop soon, so be on the lookout!

Our final Outlander-inspired project kit has landed! The Celtic Forest Pullover by Therese Chynoweth is a top-down sweater featuring a classic yoke design and figure-flattering details. Knit in the incredibly soft and cool Lhasa Wilderness yak/bamboo yarn, this piece is a year round winner!

Best of all, you’ll save over 15% when you purchase yarn & pattern together in our exclusive kit.

Knit your way through the Outlander series with this newest kit added to our online store! These kits will also be making their show debut this weekend at YarnCon and the Interweave Yarn Fest!

Coit Tower stands on the top of Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. There are two ways to get to Coit Tower: you can drive there — Lombard Street ends at the top of Telegraph Hill — or you can walk. By far the best route is via the stairs on the east side of the hill. There are two staircases that climb from the Embarcadero to the top of the hill (a rise of about 270 feet); one of them is Greenwich Steps. Both staircases wind their way through a tiny neighborhood of cottages with meticulously tended gardens that overflow with glorious flowers.

This rectangular shawl starts with a very long toe-up sock cast on (use your favorite one). It works out from this center line, increasing in width and length with every odd row. The shawl is worked in the round, and is seamless. Diamonds and flowers are accented with pretty little nupps. If you wish, replace the nupps with beads for a touch of bling.

I am guessing that I am not alone on this, but I am in love with colorfully dyed yarn. A big part of what motivated me into designing in the first place was the desire to allow the yarn to look as beautiful knit up as it does in the skein. And just when I think I have it figured out the amazing artists that dye the yarns come up with new techniques.

Currently occupying my thoughts are the speckle dyed yarns. What do they like? How are they going to behave? Can I convince them to do what I want? This pattern is a result of a long discussion with the skein of yarn that became the cowl. Knit up in the color Meadow from Gale’s Art, I think I managed to achieve my goal of allowing the yarn to shine through while still creating a fun knit.

Combining slipped stitches with a honeycomb style stitch pattern results in a deeply textured fabric that you simply cannot stop squooshing. It is fast and fun to knit so you can make the hat and cowl for yourself and for gifts. Designed for DK weight yarn each piece takes about one skein. During the test knitting process, a couple of my testers chose to use highly variegated sock yarn held double and that worked beautifully too.

It’s been a very long time coming, but I have finally found the PERFECT alpaca/Merino fingering weight yarn! 20% alpaca/60% Merino/20% nylon, this 4-ply fingering weight yarn is kettle dyed in jewel tones that will stop you in your tracks! This yarn is so sinfully soft, so fabulously squishy that you will want to knit every pair of socks from now on in VELVET!

If you attended the Carolina Fiber Fest last weekend, you’ve already seen (and fondled) this incredible yarn. If you weren’t in the area and couldn’t attend, then the only thing to do is to order some for yourself right now! I am so in love with this yarn that I think I am going to have to re-assign my sock yarn stash as a “shawl stash.” VELVET is just that amazing.

So stop by my online shop and check it out for yourself. You’re absolutely going to love this yarn!

Happy crafting!

P.S. We are featuring SIX new Rocket Sock color ways this week that will knock your socks off!
