Hello from ECY Shedquarters! We have another busy week ahead with Buxton Wool Gathering this weekend. Hopefully we will get to see some of you there! For information and tickets, check out their website. We will be bringing lots of lovely yarn with us so come along to see it all in person. Our next show after Buxton Wool Gathering will be The Wool Monty in Sheffield on 8th and 9th June. For more information or to book tickets check out the website.

Looking back to the end of last week, we added lots of mini skeins to the website. There are new Tempo 4ply and Rosedale 4ply mini skeins so do go have a look at those. We also have added loads of yarn packs for Tempo 4ply full and mini skeins. Yarn packs are the ideal way to get select a combinations of colours that work well together as we have taken the guesswork out for you. All yarn packs come at a discount from the price of the buying the yarns separately.

Tempo 4ply is a really versatile yarn — it’s our toughest sock yarn so it’s great for socks, but it is also soft enough for garments, and it’s got enough drape for lace too. It isn’t as soft as Brimham 4ply (that’s essentially the softer version of Tempo) but it’s soft enough for next-to-skin wear, especially considering how hardwearing and sturdy it is. I have been producing it since 2008! If you’d like to check out what people have made in it we do have a couple of blog posts featuring of projects made in Tempo 4ply, they can be found on our Yarn Specific Blog Posts Index (or, if you’re able to use Ravelry, you can of course look at projects on there).

A small update of Titus DK has also gone live on the website. Titus DK is a very luxurious blend of Superwash Merino and mulberry silk. The silk gives it a gorgeous shine (especially in dark or rich colours). It is ideal for all sorts of projects, from gloves to garments and everything in between. Did you know that the orange is a sharing fruit? Its slices represent the gift of giving and sharing as each of you and your friends get a portion. It was a treat to find an orange in your stocking during the great depression and those that did get one treasured it as a gift of gold from St. Nicholas and they often shared it on Christmas Morning.

Lynn and Marny started Explore Knitting Tours to combine their love of travel and knitting. Lynn will take you on a unique and special tour of these Italian cities.

You will enjoy wine tasting and a tour of a family-owned vineyard, view spectacular cathedrals, architecture and art, and enjoy shopping, incredible food and culture. We will stay in luxurious historic hotels embellished with ancient frescos and unforgettable panoramic views. We travel by comfortable coach, and you will explore Italy through a native’s perspective. We will visit an original working loom studio from the 18th century and yarn stores in Florence with the latest European yarns. Marny will teach you techniques, shaping, colorwork, designing, and more. Classes are modified to accommodate all levels of knitting. Non-knitters are welcome.

Inspired by traditional fishing net floats…The Glass Floats Story Collection from Quill & Quiver Fiber

The newest Quill & Quiver yarn collection, The Glass Floats Story Collection, is inspired by traditional fishing net floats made of recycled glass. Hailing from Norway, Japan and later the U.S., glass floats are highly sought after by beachcombers and antique collectors alike due to their vibrant colors and unusual story. Glass fishing floats were first commercially manufactured in Norway in the mid 19th century and were widely utilized to support fishing nets for the prolific stockfish fishing industry in the Lofoten Islands of Northern Norway. Prior to the invention of the glass float, fishing nets were supported by wood or cork buoys, which would eventually become waterlogged and sink. In Japan, the floats are called ukidama which translates to “floating ball.” The Japanese started manufacturing glass floats around 1910 and many dislodged floats have been found along the Pacific Rim, including on the west coast of the United States and Alaska, after a long voyage across the Pacific Ocean. American companies began manufacturing glass fishing floats in the 1930s and 1940s, during a time when the U.S. was looking for alternative sources for many European and Japanese manufactured goods before and during World War II. Collectors look for variations in shape, color, and seal marks, all of which reveal clues about the age and origin of these unique objects.
