When it came time to name my latest color collection, the colors are a dreamy, deep escape into romantic notions so naturally, my brain bubbled the word “Romantisch” to the surface. When I first learned this German word, I would roll the R a little, drop “mAN” for a more guttural “MAHn,” and then end in a whispering “tisch.” It felt like a secret endeavor. The word promised an escape into velvety, soft whispers from a lover.

Hello! Somehow I skipped putting a little chat on here for January, the months are a bit of a blur… Nevermind, here we are in mid-February and I hope you are well and being safe. If you pop on over to check out Dragon Thistle Fibers, my shop, you’ll see some pretty mini sets — I carry 10g and 20g mini sets, made up from four to 10 skeins. At the moment all are fingering weight, and I will be putting some worsted-weight minis back in stock soon in the next couple of weeks.

If you use Highland wool in your crafts, I carry worsted weight in beautiful colorways, great for quick mittens, hats, or the bigger projects, like crocheted blankets.

I am a small-and batch dyer, however I do try to have a unique variety for you to choose from, and I also aim to get your order out to you the next business day!

My knitting bags tend to be on the larger size so you can carry everything you need (tools of the trade and personal items) and not feel cramped for space. But if you like to knit smaller projects and like smaller bags in which to carry them, then I have just the bag for you.

A friend of mine sent me an image of a cinch bag for knitters that I thought was too small and hard to use and not very attractive. I decided to come up with my own version using my lovely wool fabrics!

It’s a combination of a cinch bag and a bucket bag. It stands on its own and maintains its shape like a bucket bag but cinches at the top to keep everything enclosed. And inside pockets keep items organized!

At 8″ round and 10″ tall, they’re perfect for projects like socks, hats, mittens, cowls, etc. They just went up on my website so you may want to head on over and take a look!

New Pencil Roving: Cirrus

I’ve always been a fan of pencil roving. The pencil-width and delicate handle make it a joy to knit, as well as spin!

Our new pencil roving, Cirrus, has both these attributes. Add in its dappled gray hue, and it’s like crafting with a storm cloud!

Cirrus is 100% wool, and made from a blend of Jacob sheep and Shetland sheep fleece. There are no dyes or synthetic fibers, so both the color and the texture come directly from the sheep that grew it. The overall feel is a medium soft.

100% wool pencil roving is a versatile material. In addition to knitting and spinning, you can easily felt it. If you’re new to using it, here are a couple tips to keep in mind!

– If you’re knitting or crocheting, treat it like a delicate, single-ply worsted yarn.

– If you’re spinning, spin it counter-clockwise to help release some of its native twist and make it easier to draft.

– If you’re needle felting, take advantage of its narrow width and gauzy feel to add intricate details, or roll it up to create core forms.

Each bump of Cirrus pencil roving is approximately 4 oz and 150 yards.

Hello beautiful fiber lovers,
I am thrilled to be partnered with Erica Heusser on a kit release for her new pattern, Varia Mitts! The Varia Mitts are exquisitely designed and like all of Sweater Sisters’ kits, are test knitted and professionally tech edited.

The mitts are knit bottom up in the round and start with a delicate jewel-like Fair Isle pattern. I love the back of the hand which features a rich outline of an owl settled in on a branch with the silvery background. The palm features a lovely Fair Isle pattern that evokes the look of individual feathers.

Erica used my Wayfarer fingering base (80% extra fine Superwash Merino/10% Cashmere/10% nylon) in Salem (rich bronze), Sanibel Island (silver grey) and Blue Hosta (blue and gold). I have kits available in these colors as well as two additional color sets; Lily of the Valley (deep olive green), Aspen (flecked gold), Sanibel Island and Catoctin (deep russet), Miami (coral, gold and silver) and Sanibel Island.

Each kit is $37 and comes with a 50g skein of the main color and two 25g skeins, one for each of the contrasting colors, and a download code for the Varia Mitts pattern by Erica Heusser.

The pattern releases on Saturday, 2/20, but the kits are available now up on the website!

Block printed project bag shop update

So happy to announce my first shop update of the year will be this Sunday, Feb 14th at 8 p.m. EST. The days are getting longer and the sun is getting stronger, so you can expect lots of really bright color combinations and bright Spring colors. Think pink and orange, mauve and purple, brown and teal, toffee and white and just a bit of gold. 🙂

For this update I tried focusing on making sets of bags for those who like sets but I sometimes got a bit distracted during the printing process tying different color combinations… So you might see one or two full sets or a set that consists of just three pieces etc. If there is enough interest I will be making more sets in the future!

Enjoy the changing of the season, I know Feb and March can be long months.

The Little Red Dress Knit-Optional KAL

Born in the Shanghai Ghetto after her family fled Germany in 1939, Judy Fleischer Kolb donated her little red dress for the 2009 opening of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. Kolb’s story is told in detail in the Little Red Dress of Hope on Modern Daily Knitting, which invites each of us into the story of Kolb and her family, who were among 20,000+ refugees who fled Nazi persecution to Shanghai, the last safe harbor in the world.

As an homage to the endurance of this piece of clothing, the piece includes a link to a contemporary little red dress knitting pattern by designer Melissa Shinsato, available for purchase on the knitting website Ravelry.

Kolb, a former nurse and museum volunteer, uses her dress to urge children to have courage and to “realize their heroes are right in front of them.” Kolb continues, “I’m so happy my dress can bring hope to others. I only wish I could share the impact of the little red dress with my family who made my life so special.”

Starting Feb 17, a Knit-Optional KAL will be held on Facebook, accessible via the Little Red Dress KAL Facebook group, which is comprised of people who have been touched by the moving story, will have the opportunity to meet Kolb, Singer and Shinsato as they knit the dress step-by-step.

The little red dress is on display at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, IL. Museum volunteers have knit 60 copies of the dress, which are sent to classrooms around the nation to teach about the Holocaust, reaching more than 1,200 students each month.
