The holidays are just around the corner, and while I’m among the group who prefers to celebrate one at a time, as a crafter I understand the need to start holiday projects with plenty of time to finish! If you’re not familiar with southwestern Pennsylvania pronunciations, it’s “yock-i-gainey.” Think “yock” like “sock”!
Did you ever wish you could channel the strength of a dragon?
I admit it’s a lot to ask of a knitted accessory. But that’s what I was thinking of when I designed Haku and Chihiro – companion one-skein cowls using the dragonscale stitch pattern. I love the thought of casing my vulnerable neck in steely yet elegant dragonskin. And I really love how this looks.
Haku uses silky fingering yarn and beads for a glamorous, grown-up accessory with a flared base. Chihiro is a straight tube in worsted weight that makes a quick gift knit for kids or adults. You can buy the set for just €6, more than 25% off the price for each separately.
Incidentally, the names come from Miyazaki’s anime classic Spirited Away. It took me ages to find a named dragon who wasn’t scary – which probably shouldn’t have surprised me, and yet. Do you find the idea of wrapping your neck in protective but totally elegant dragonskin as appealing as I do?

The Haygarden Shawl was created in collaboration with Artisan Yarns by Hampden Hills Alpacas. It features garter. stripes and slip stitches in a bias triangle. Three colors of DK weight alpaca/silk were used making for a soft, drapey shawl that is fun to knit and wear. The sample will be on display this weekend at Rhinebeck in Building 39, booth 9.
I can’t believe it’s time once again for the New York Sheep & Wool Festival! This will be Spirit Trail Fiberworks’ 14th year at the Festival, and every year we’re just as excited as our first year. It’s such a fantastic weekend (even if this coming weekend doesn’t look like it will be sweater weather).
We’ll be at the Festival in our regular spot: Building A, Booths 3-4. We have loads of new colorways, a few new yarn bases, and lots of new booth samples to inspire you. Shown here are just a few of the great new colors we’re bringing with us. We hope to see you at the Festival, but if you can’t make it, no worries. We’ll be having an online shop update of new colors and bases as soon as we can!
Hello, Untanglers! It’s been a busy summer & fall at Alpenglow Yarn, as we’ve been getting ready to launch our second product for indie dyers – the SkeinTwister! This tool helps with the final task that dyers, yarn companies, and mills do before mailing yarn to you – twist up those loose hanks into nice, tidy skeins. This is almost entirely done by hand, and you can probably imagine that it gets tiring and can even be painful if you’re twisting a large batch, or already have joint pain. Enter the SkeinTwister! It’s a motorized hook that does the twisting part, all the dyer has to do is fold the skein in half and push one end through the other to fasten it off. We’re excited about it, dyers are excited about it, and even if you’re not a dyer, there are several ways you can join in the fun too!
For fans of naturally dyed yarn, Alpenglow Yarn and Sincere Sheep are getting together at the dyepots to bring you AlpenSheep – a collaboration! We’re always talking dyes, and are excited to get together and work with a variety of dyestuffs and combine techniques. We’ll be dyeing her Cormo Sport yarn, which is entirely sourced and spun in the USA and is amazingly soft and springy. You can order as many skeins as you’d like, and request either all on color or multiple coordinating colors if you have a colorwork project in mind.
If you’re a little bit on yarn overload at the moment, we have a bunch of really fun Pirate Red gear! Pirate Red is the SkeinTwister’s sassy mascot, and you can drink some rum with her on our rocks glasses, or sport her on a coffee mug or t-shirt. We can offer a variety of styles and sizes thanks to on-demand printing, which also cuts down on textile waste because only the shirts that are ordered are made.

I have been very busy the past few weeks dying some new tonal and speckled colors. The website has been updated and all of these colors work well together to create a variety of fades. Colors are currently available on several of my fingering weight bases. Just visit the **New** section of the website to view them all. There are even a few OOAKs sprinkled in there.
Vintage No. 3 comprises fleeces from my own Shetland flock, blended with CVM fleeces, prime alpaca, and cultivated silk. The yarn offers a buttery soft handle, with exceptional loft and integrity. No. 3 is spun more smoothly and consistently than previous Vintage yarns, resulting in an even, warm and airy fabric with crisp stitch definition that is perfect for cables.
Natural Brown comes from blending my mioget (caramel brown) Shetland, Roobie, with a black CVM fleece. Prime black alpaca and white silk round out the colors to produce a warm milk chocolate brown.
Natural Grey comes from blending my two black Shetlands, Poppy and Quin, with cream CVM roving, along with a prime silver alpaca fleece and white silk.
Natural White is a blend of cream CVM roving and a white Shetland fleece from Oregon, mixed with prime silver alpaca and white silk.
As with all Vintage yarns, fleeces and rovings are hand-selected as the best of its kind and for the unique qualities it contributes to the final blend. I look for fibers that are are extremely soft but resistant to pilling. Minimal processing means there may be the occasional bit of vegetable matter, but it also means that the yarn retains its sheepy characteristics and feels full of life.
Gauge: 16 – 20 sts = 4″ (10 cm) Needles: 6 – 8 (4 – 5 mm)
Weight / Yardage: 3.5 oz /220 yds (100 gr/ 201 m)
