This month brings us the last ECY update for 2015, and lots of news for you.
First of all there’s the new hand dyed yarn — primarily Bowland DK (100% superwash British Bluefaced Leicester) and BFL Sock (also 100% superwash British BFL). Also look out for our gorgeous hand-carved shawl pins and sheep straight from our woodturner friend in Japan.
Next up, we’re having a sale on our lovely Askham 4ply — this baby alpaca/silk yarn is super-fine and soft, with 200m to each 50g ball and reduced by 25%, it’s a great oppurtunity to stock up on sweater quantities. I’ve been reviving the art of shepherding for over 20 years. The abundance of wool I harvest each Spring has inspired a variety of yarns. I hand process the fiber and handspin it into one of a kind yarns for knitting and weaving. I also send wool out to be custom spun into a variety of yarns, from laceweight to bulky singles. All the wool yarns is natural and undyed and available to purchase for your creative dyeing projects.
I also have LONGWOOL LOCKS from my English Leicester sheep available. They are all washed and natural and undyed, and I have SPINNING & FELTING FIBER for your creative endeavors.

Dark Harbour Yarn is a small indie dye company based in Wellington, New Zealand! Yarns are dyed in small batches, and I focus on achieving deep, layered colours that look stunning in the skein and when knitted up! This update (the last of 2015) features gradient sets — 600m of merino fingering yarn, and kits for Vexillology — a large, dramatic and very wearable shawl, as well as many other lovelies.

Knit in the round, the Gringolet Cowl uses a combination of increases (including double yarn overs) and decreases to create geometric shapes. The center of the stitch pattern resembles horseshoes, connecting the pattern to Gawain’s faithful horse, Gringolet. The pattern is both fully written out and charted, so you can use whichever type of directions works best for you.

About the Name
Gawain was one of the knights of the Round Table — an integral part of the stories both in his own right as well as because he was Arthur’s nephew. Although horses were important to the knights and get many mentions in the tales, not very many horses are given names. Gringolet is one such exception, and the name is used in several stories about Gawain from various traditions, such as the French Erec and Enide by Chretien de Troyes, the English Lancelot-Grail Cycle as well as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and the German Parzival by Wolfram von Eschenbach.
According to Roger Shermin Loomis, the name was derived from a Welsh word meaning either “white and hardy” or “handsome and hardy.” In either case, the “hardy” definition fits with Gringolet’s character quite well as he is a horse Gawain can rely upon. In Parzival, Gawain comes upon a wounded knight and tends to his injury. Gawain is “rewarded” by having Gringolet stolen from him. Later, Gawain finds himself jousting against a different knight who is riding Gringolet and recovers his horse, which is easily identified by the mark of the Grail it bears. Losing and regaining Gringolet seems to be a recurrent plot point for Gawain.
