Hello and happy spring from Pancake and Lulu Yarn, aka PLY! For April, fun colors and spring refreshing are on my mind.

In yarn news, I am still on a speckle experimentation kick. I have been creating some new Speckle Semisolids, which read like solids from afar, but are more speckle-y when viewed up close compared to my regular semisolids. I am having so much fun using these with some more traditional speckles in my latest cast-on: the Soldotna Crop by Boyland Knitworks. This is my first Caitlin Hunter project and I see right away why she is so popular — the pattern is very addictive!

I’m also planning to create some really special spring miniskein sets this month. So keep an eye out for those. Some of these combos will be based off of my versions of the All You Need is Love hat by Swift Yarns and my Shortcut Cowl by Stephanie Lotven. Another will be based off of my version of the Nightshift shawl by Andrea Mowry.

Speaking of Andrea — I met her!! I attended Andrea Untangled in Brooklyn. It was such a fun event and a great evening with Andrea and the incomparable Kristy Glass. It was a thrill to meet both of them and to show off my Nightshift made with PLY yarn. They are both so friendly and fun, as are all the wonderful knitters who attended.

Lastly, in My Dye Studio news, I am in the process of creating and moving into a brand new huge (compared to my old) workspace! I have completely cleaned and painted the basement under my kitchen and am installing a large restaurant sink, ventilation system and work tables. Check Instagram this month for my progress reports. It will be a total dream space for me to work in. Yay for fresh spring projects!

Well, that’s about it for now. Hope you are enjoying your spring so far (or cozying up with your knits for fall, if you are in the other hemisphere!)

xo, Aimee at PLYarn

This year I am doing one of the most exciting yarn clubs out there!

One of my favorite parts of dyeing yarn is we all do it differently and we each have our own style. It’s often talked about that even if two dyers had the same set of dyes, their skeins of yarn would still look different because we are all unique.

To show there is a place for us all, each month I am collaborating with a different indie dyer to create one of kind sets based on a common inspiration. The cool part, we aren’t discussing anything else about our colorways once the inspiration is chosen, we just go and do our thing. What comes from this is two unique, yet coordinating yarn to use for two-color shawls, as part of a fade or even colorwork possibilities.

So far this year I have had the pleasure to work with Machete Shoppe, The Flying Kettle and Woolberry Fiber Co.

Some months will have special items included like stitch markers (last month was Blue Dog Workshop), other goodies, or even patterns designed specially for that month!

The month of April is a very exciting month indeed! I have paired up with Nicole from HueLoco to create a beautiful set that will feature a summer top designed by Olga from Handmade Closet. Preorders will go live in my shop on April 1 for only one week. You won’t want to miss out on this month, trust me!

I’m looking at this as a little bit of an experiment and I also hope for the club to be in the true spirit of what this community is: connections, sharing and love.

Coming in May, I will be releasing my latest shawl pattern called Winter’s Moon and I thought it would be fun to create a Pandia’s Moon Box filled with everything you nee to make this beautiful shawl. Each box will contain three skeins of yarn, a Ravelry download code, and a few other lunar inspired goodies. I have a limited number of supplies so I only plan to make a few boxes. Preorders for the box will start Wednesday, March 27 at 10 a.m. EDT and will be available through 8 p.m. EDT on Sunday, March 31, unless they sell out before then. All of the preordered boxes are scheduled to ship sometime in June.

The yarn included in this set is dyed on our popular Treasure Dust Minis made up of 75% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon and 5% Lurex. A lovely yarn that is soft, yet durable with a just enough sparkle and is machine washable in cool water on a gentle cycle. Hand wash normal and lay flat to dry.

The colorway for this set is “Speckled Easter Eggs” made especially for this set and Easter.

The mug rug is quite cute and will hold your cup of tea or coffee and a small snack while you are working on your project! It is a machine embroidery design by Embroidery Garden and is available at www.embroiderygarden.com if you would like to make one yourself ????

If you attended Knitters’ Day Out last fall, you saw our limited collaboration with Fiberarrium that included an awesome sloth bag and coordinating dyed sock yarn. We loved those sloths! While we weren’t able to acquire any more of that fabric (apparently it’s crazy popular!) we WERE able to get this awesome print! I love how calm and almost floral this fabric looks, then all of a sudden you realize there is a sloth peeking out from one of the trees!

This Stealthy Sloth bag is the perfect combination of “grown-up” and fun, with the classic grey/pink/teal/white combination, and teeny little sloths scattered throughout. I don’t expect these guys to hang around for long though, so grab one today!

The Knitting Artist has been busy creating new colors and designs. The biggest update is the addition of the semi-speckled “paintwater” and the tonals that, paired with the original handpaints, create wonderful fades and striping projects. Buy all three (or four) and find the perfect color changing project. Or maybe pick up a kit for our newest designs, Dripping Paint Hat and Cowl, which utilize 50 grams of each type of yarn to create wonderful fading accessories. Each kit comes with your choice of yarn in 3 to 50-gram skeins and a copy of the pattern.

Introducing knitters’ mini sketchbooks from adKnits! When you’ve got your project with you on the go, a little sketchbook is an absolute must! Great for jotting down notes or sketching out a quick idea, these pint-size booklets are perfect to tuck into your project bag, purse or pack.

They’re small, but they pack a punch! The inside cover of each sketchbook includes a knitting reference chart and (my favorite part) a five-inch ruler. Made from recycled paper with a sturdy kraft cover, these little sketchbooks are an essential for any knitter!

When the big yarn festivals come and go it is easy to feel like EVERYONE was there except you. 🙁

Let’s ease the pain with a yarn sale!
25% off sweater quantities when you purchase any four items, mini sets included!

Do you only need one skein of fingering for contrasting heels/toes/cuffs? Or a couple of skeins of DK for colorwork?
Mix and match to your heart’s content. 🙂

Once you add four items to your cart discount is applied automatically to your entire order. Domestic Shipping is $4.

The Mini Skein Set of the Month, “Luck ‘O the Irish,” is included in the sale, and there are some new fun colorways in the shop — check out “Grumpy Old Troll” on sock and two DK bases and “I Dream of Mermaids” on DK.

All listings are ready to ship!

We have been working on a thing. A big thing. When it comes to dying yarn, nothing is more exciting than adding a new base to the yarn family. It is like having a baby, without all the cleanup. Vintage Vixen is unlike anything we have ever had at Despondent Dyes. It is our first non-Superwash base, our first sportweight, and the first yarn we have specifically designed to use in garment knitting/crocheting.

Our first palette of colors includes 12 stunning colors and three neutrals. This yarn is plump and soft and works up in colorwork like it was made for it. We cannot wait to knit all the sweaters, crochet all the tops, and of course, colorwork all the mittens in this amazing yarn.

The yarn officially launches April 15, but this is your special invitation to preorder, because we have a plan….
Maybe you have seen a sweet little top from Pom Pom Quarterly — the Water Clover top? Maybe you thought, gosh I would love to crochet that in a brand new sportweight from Despondent Dyes! Well guess what? Your dreams are all coming true! We are going to be hosting a crochet-along on our Instagram, Ravelry and Facebook platforms and we want you to play along!

The crochet-along will start April 15, the day the sportweight yarn launches. For the next two weeks we will have pre-orders up in our webshop! You’ll get a 15% off discount on two or more preordered skeins of Vintage Vixen, just use the code CROCHETALONG at checkout!
