For this shop update we have added some lovely new yarns to the shop, including a new worsted weight Merino base called Squish-a-Rino and our newly released pattern, Kaleidoscope Supernova. This is a beautiful, adaptable pattern that showcases the unique dye technique and can be knit as a cowl or scarf. It features stitch work that is easy to do but creates high contrast, prismatic fabric with the dramatic colour variegation in Mashmellow Rino yarn. The fabric knits up flat and reversible and is the perfect project for a single hank of Mashmellow Rino, or two if you would like to make a wider or longer scarf. Suggested skills for this easy level pattern include knit, purl, knit through the back loop, knit in the round, increase, decrease and short rows. The tech-edited and test-knit pattern includes written directions, a yarn color changing guide and a schematic.

Note: if substituting a variety of solid colored yarns, the pattern creates a striping effect of differing, but flattering, widths.

THOREAU fingering (50/50 Yak & Silk) offers one of those sensory experiences that makes you believe in magic. It is so incredibly soft. It really does leave me full of wonder and cravings when I squeeze a skein of Thoreau.

This base takes colors in a softly muted fashion. It achieves saturated rich colors, but presents these colors as if they’ve been gently blanketed with a wisp of cloud.

A delightful attribute of Thoreau is that it blooms more than any other yarn base I’ve ever worked with; so much so that it knits up like the fingering that it is, but blocks out with such a wonderfully full stitch definition that you actually start to wonder if it wasn’t swapped for a dk in the wee hours of the night. It’s clearly a very proud fiber that blooms in preparation for the spotlight.

New Pattern Release: Pyramus Beret and Thisbe Cowl

The tall, skinny cables in this matching hat and cowl resemble the crack in the wall through which star-crossed lovers Pyramus and Thisbe communicated. The length of the cowl provides warmth as well as a nice drape so it can be worn comfortably. The beret is knit from the top down in the round. The patterns are both fully written out and charted, so you can use whichever type of instruction works best for you.

Yarn
Malabrigo Arroyo (100% superwash Merino wool, 335 yds/306 m per 100 g); 1 skein for each project; samples use colorway Reflecting Pool; or 300 yds (274 m) of another sport weight yarn for each project

Beret Materials
US 6 (4 mm) 16” (40 cm) circular needle plus DPNs, or size needed to obtain gauge
US 5 (3.75 mm) 16” (40 cm) circular needle, or one size smaller than needle to obtain gauge
Cable needle
6 stitch markers (one different to mark beginning of round)

Cowl Materials
US 6 (4 mm) 24” (60 cm) circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge

Callistemon Beanie & Mittens

It’s the middle of summer where I am and we’re currently in the grip of a heatwave, so I find myself reminiscing of winter and of cool weather. Of grey skies, of rain and of bundling up in knits instead of melting under them. I find myself recalling those long stretches, when winter gets endless with days upon days of grey skies and I need a pop of bright colour to cheer me up. I found these two skeins of The Verdant Gryphon Traveller in Painted Grasshawk in my stash and knew immediately they could cure all dreary ills. Not only that, but they needed to be a matching beanie and mittens.

Callistemon Beanie is knit in the round and begins with a 1×1 brim deep enough to fold up. The head is worked in the tiny bowknot pattern and the beanie is finished off with an optional pompom. Callistemon Mittens are fingerless mittens worked using the same pattern, but have two ‘finger cuff’ options. You can knit the finger portion with a short cuff, or a long cuff (pictured). The long cuff is deep enough to cover your fingers and can be folded back out of the way.

Our popular “Summer Skies Rainbow Brite” is now available on DK 100% Merino yarn for self-striping hats, as well as on Platinum Sock and Sparkle Sock. It’s a delight watch the “clouds” emerge from the blue “sky” as you knit, and the rainbows are super vibrant!
