Hello from ECY Shedquarters!

Our Festive Seasonal Stash Boxes are well underway and will be ready to ship by the end of November. We are making them available to newsletter subscribers and members of our facebook group first and then for general release on the website on Monday. If you’re not familiar with our annual festive boxes we start with a handmade project bag from Ellen Shek and I then dye yarn to coordinate with the bag. We select a few other festive treats, package it up and post them out to you. They make a lovely gift for the yarn fan in your life or a special treat for yourself! If you are gifting during the festive period check out our Christmas posting dates blog post.

Also coming on Monday we have a Titus 4ply update. Titus 4ply is a true ECY classic, Superwash extrafine Merino with mulberry silk. It is smooth, soft and shiny with great drape making it ideal for garments, shawls and accesories. There is a great mix of semi-solid colourways as well as a number of variegated colourways so there will be plenty to choose from. They are available in batches of five but if you need more than five of a particular colourway we also have our Dyed to Order Sweater Quantity listings for many of our yarn bases.

We also have a festive sparkly yarn update coming very soon so keep an eye out for news of that!

As part of our gemstone series, we’re happy to unveil Topaz!

Of our gemstones, Topaz probably has the widest range of colors it’s found in naturally: browns, golds, blues, pinks, purple, even colorless. Topaz is also pleochroic, meaning that the gem can show different colors in different crystal directions.

Most etymology of the word “topaz” seems to refer to the mineral topaz itself, but there is the potential origin of from the Sanskrit word तपस् “tapas,” meaning “heat” or “fire.” In the Middle Ages, topaz referred to any yellow stone, but in modern times, it only refers to the specific silicate mineral of aluminum and fluorine.

There was an English superstition that claimed that topaz cured lunacy, and ancient Romans believed that topaz provided protection from danger while traveling. During the Middle Ages, attaching the topaz to the left arm was thought protect the owner from any curse and warded off the evil eye. Wearing topaz was also believed to increase body heat, which would enable people to relieve a cold or fever. Middle Age Europe, it was thought that topaz could enhance mental powers.

Orange topaz specifically is the conventional birthstone for November. It is also the symbol of friendship and the state gemstone of the state of Utah, and blue topaz is the state gemstone of the state of Texas. Blue topaz is the gem of the fourth anniversary and Imperial topaz is the gem of the 23rd anniversary.

Our Topaz yarn definitely sits in the weird middle zone of yellow, orange, brown, and gold. It is a tonal with a lot of dimension that is honestly probably best viewed in person (but you can also check out our gemstone highlight on our Instagram to see it with other colors!)

Our recommended pairings are Scorpio and Sagittarius (naturally), Pumpkin Spice Latte, Longaberger Picnic Basket, Garnet, Irish Cream Cold Foam, Samhain… it fits in really well with a fall palette and a lot of our tonals, honestly.

I loved getting to bring my ideas to life in these colorways! Inspired by the sheer coziness of Christmas, and captivated by the traditional colors of this time of year, I set out to create something very unique for our brand. I hope you love them all as much as I do!

My Timeless Cozy Christmas Collection features seven speckled colorways, 10 coordinating tonals (four of which are brand NEW), a holiday 10g mini set, and four hand-picked bundles! ⁠This entire collection is available for PREORDER until November 26, unless we hit capacity before then! Kicking it off is the colorway that inspired this collection: O Tannenbaum. ????

This colorway gives a nod to the classic Christmas carol that puts you in a festive spirit by bringing to mind a stately pine that’s aglow with sparkling lights, transforming the surrounding room. This monochromatic spectrum of greens pull together all the playful speckles of fuchsia, plum, and golden yellows, to name a few!

I wanted to include all of the colors that you might find when trimming your own tree. I hope when you start working with this colorway it feels more like crafting with a piece of joyful anticipation, ready to infuse your projects with the same magic that inspired me.
