Nerdy Fibers started in a small apartment kitchen. It was a scary jump, but this was something I had wanted since I was 16 years old. After years of working for others and never being home for my daughter I decided to take the leap. This has been the scariest, and the most fulfilling, work I’ve done. I’ve never regretted this decision even after starting right before March of 2020. I’m grateful I get to wake up and do what I love everyday. There has been a lot of learning curves and speed bumps along the way, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I love what I do and I’m happy it’s given me the time to be around my daughter. It’s been a dream to be surrounded by beautiful yarn everyday and it’s finally happened.

One Plus One Plus One Equals One

I love to go into a new season mixing up a fresh range of solids that the changing landscape inspires in me. This spring I was definitely pulled towards the sand, the mountains and the sea. Developing a wide range of colors with similar values, that create harmony together is one of the best parts of my job.

The real magic comes next — combining these building blocks into variegated yarns brings the whole collection together. My goal is always to create these mixes in such a way that yields a smooth wash of color, even when the individual elements are in high contrast. Since it can be a challenge to visualize how some colors will knit up, I swatched them up so we could see. The best part is that for every one of these new multis there are two or three or even four solids to use as companions.

Some of my favorites this time around are Angelfish, Butte, Painted Desert and Lupinus. I’ve dyed these on an assortment of Deep Sock, Harbour Singles fingering and Triton, my luxe Merino, Cashmere and nylon blend DK. And of course, there companion mohair colors to choose from.

There are only a few more days until the Tour de Fleece starts. In case you haven’t heard of it before: it is a worldwide (online) event for spinners to challenge themselves and cheer each other on. It happens every year during the time of the famous Tour de France.

As I am an enthusiastic spinner myself, I have washed, picked, carded and dyed up a storm for you and added some more fibers to my shop. They are all ready to ship, with free shipping in the U.S., and I will in fact add more in the next few days (some batches are still drying as I am writing this).

From sheep to shelf: British yarn at its best

We are a small family farm nestled in the rolling hills of the Hampshire countryside in Southern England. For over a decade we have been producing quality yarns from our specialist fine wool flocks. Farming for fibre we take every care not only to our woolly ladies but also to the landscape they inhabit. Working to increase the biodiversity of our meadows and also to conserve our ancient chalk downland, which has seen summer grazing flocks for over a 1000 years.

Shorn by our shepherdess Susie with care and kindness, we sort and spin and hand dye on the farm to ensure we maintain the quality at very stage. From the lamb to the skein we work to ensure we farm ethically whilst producing yarns that will knit beautifully.

Memorial Day was the unofficial start of summer (even though it felt more like early April here on the East Coast), and we’re celebrating by dropping all the prices on our yarns, kits and yarn packs!

Our 50-gram skeins of 100% Shetland Wool are now $10 each, and our 25-gram mini skeins are now $5 each. All our kits and yarn packs reflect this drop, so it’s the perfect time to select yarns for your next project!

New in our yarn pack collection is Isabell Kraemer’s Emsworth (pattern available on Ravelry). It’s a classic slipover with a cute lace/texture pattern panel in front and on the back, worked seamlessly from the top down. Like all of Isabell’s knitwear, the pattern is clearly written and comes in a wide range of sizes.

We’re offering yarn packs in a range of our natural colors for this wardrobe staple. We knit ours in Bramble, a rich, warm grey. Between the yarn, the pattern, and the design, it was a joy to knit (and even though we’ve just dipped our toes into summer, I can’t wait for fall to wear it!).

Bumper Keld Fingering update!

Hooray! The sun has finally started shining here at ECY Shedquarters and I am so ready for it! Flowers are coming through, the birds are singing (so loud!), and I had my first Covid jab at the weekend. All this positivity really helps get the creative juices flowing and I am excited to bring you lots more lovely yarn. There’s nothing nicer than sitting in the shade on a sunny day and working on the latest project. ????

Our next update will be going live on the website on Wednesday 2nd June at 3 p.m. UK time and will be Keld Fingering, our Merino linen singles yarn. We have been blown away by how popular this yarn is and the last update sold so quickly that we had to bring you more. And when I say more, I do mean an absolute mountain of it! I am *so* excited to unleash this lot!

Have you seen my latest new pattern? Riverside Walks is a large asymmetric triangular shawl combining fluffy garter stitch with sparkly lace sections which fade along the shawl. The pattern is available on our website and on Payhip but we have closed our Ravelry store. The pattern uses two skeins of Lowther Lace in Riverside with a Rosedale 4ply mini skein fade set in Ash but you could use a single 100g skein of any 4ply/fingering weight instead of the fade set. Our testers did a fantastic job in helping get this pattern ready to release and you can see some of these in our Riverside Walks blog post (in the ECY News section).

A few months ago we opened a preorder for hand-carved sheep, cows and shawl pins from Wood Works Crando. They are now finished and in transit from Japan! All of these have excited homes to go to but we are hoping to run another pre-order in the next few months. Sturdy & Stylish: Meet Karst

Karst made its official debut at the Indie Spotlight show earlier this month. Now it’s available to everyone — along with a new sock pattern to boot!

Karst is a sport-weight yarn made from a blend of white Cheviot sheep wool (the fiber traditionally used in kilt socks) and stormy Huacaya alpaca fleece.

Like all our yarn, the fiber is undyed. The whisper gray color comes directly from the fiber itself. The yarn’s namesake is a nod to karst landscapes, which are common here in Central Texas, and dominated by light gray limestone.

Karst is a great sock yarn, with a sturdy, medium feel that is still soft enough for next-to-skin wear. In fact, as soon as I got this yarn back from the mill, I asked Alissa Barton of the Knitting Fairy if she would be interested in whipping up a sock pattern just for Karst! The result is the Barn Sock, a thick and snug sock that’s great when you want some extra padding along with extra warmth.

New made-to-order bags

I am very happy and proud to present you the latest happy creations from our Atelier: made-to-order bags!

I have created a whole collections of six different bags that I will make to order to your own specifications and choices, in a striking palette of hand-dyed colours!

The materials: I use only natural materials. The bags are all made with organic cotton, cotton webbing, and metal gears.

The colour palette: inspired by Sicily, an Italian region close to my heart, all the colours are bold, striking and unique.

The dyes: I use fiber reactive dyes: minimal waste of water, sticking results, lasting over time and lightfast.

The prints: from linocut to screen-printing, all the prints I add to bags come from my own design and I print them with water based ink.

The bags: from small to huge, you can choose among different model of bags: choose the one that suits you best and I will make it for you in the colour you choose!

The customisations: from strap length to colours and different closures, you can really customise your bag to the smallest detail!

Every bag is accompanied by a video showing you how to make your choices and place an order.
