Iraira is Māori for “variegated,” reflecting the usage of variegated yarn in this design. Two skeins of yarn are used: one in a solid color and one in a variegated color. This shawl is worked with increases and decreases to shape it into the asymmetrical triangular shape. There’s lots of garter stitch, but the pattern is kept interesting with the use of stripes and slip stitches at different points of the pattern. The shawl is bound off using the picot bind-off for a nice, subtle touch.

This pattern is perfect for the adventurous beginner knitter who has made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Stitches include knit and slip stitches, as well as a k2tog decrease and a kfbf double increase.

Step into an ancient realm of Beauty and Wonder.

Before Frodo and Gandalf, before Sauron and Galadriel, Yavanna Kementari planted the fields and forests of Middle-earth. This J.R.R. Tolkien character is the “lover of all things that grow in the earth… from the trees like towers in forests long ago to the moss upon stones or the small and secret things in the mould.”

Join me for a six-week knit-a-long as we knit the elegant Kementari Stole. Together, we’ll explore the vast forests and fertile plains of Middle-earth, not as we know them during the events of the Lord of the Rings, but in a time so long ago it cannot be measured in years.

The KAL will run over the course of six weeks and will take place through email, on Zoom, and in the Refracted Light Fiber Arts Ravelry Group.

Each week will kick off with an email that contains a link to a group Zoom call where we can get to know our fellow travelers, get oriented to that week’s project goal, and experience the wonder of Middle-earth with readings from The Silmarillion. We can then stay connected throughout the week in the Ravelry group where we can continue chatting about our projects and generally stay up to date.

Throughout the KAL, you will be expertly guided through both the beauty of Middle-earth and the joy of knitting a beautiful stole.

Along the way, there will be opportunities to win one of many lovely prizes, contributed from yours truly as well as a variety of talented designers and artists.

Visit my website to register and for more information about timeline, prizes, and official rules.

When I think of the word winter, the Māori New Year Matariki immediately comes to mind. Winter in the Southern Hemisphere runs during the Northern’s summer months — June to August. Matariki refers to the cluster of stars (the Pleiades) that become visible during this time of year, heralding the New Year and giving a prediction of what the next 12 months will bring in terms of crops, weather and growth.

The Whetū Cowl (whetuu meaning star) features a lace star stitch motif in a fuzzy mohair yarn, on a backdrop of the night sky, twinkling with stars (the wool and mohair held together).

Sari Nordlund’s newest book, Summer Knits, is now here at Red Hen Books! There are lots of tees, tanks, vests, and even a skirt. Most patterns involve lace knitting but the instructions are detailed enough to make the process smooth. This book even has an attached satin ribbon bookmark so it’s easy to mark your place.

In addition, there are two other brand new books, from Knits from our Gardens and The Art of Knitwear Repair. Both are beautifully photographed and also come with a satin bookmark. Knits from our Gardens contains essays on gardening as well as a variety of knitting patterns. And The Art of Knitwear Repair is a comprehensive guide to the many ways to repair holes or rips in your knitted garments. I especially like the chapter on reclaiming yarn from old sweaters.

We know that a lot of knitters and crocheters struggle with getting the correct gauge, or with counting the stitches in a gauge swatch. It’s a frustrating task that takes away from the fun, creative part of making a new project. That’s why we’ve developed a new Gauge Wheel that really makes it simple to get quick and accurate gauge swatch readings… so you can get on to the good stuff!

All you have to do is hold the windows up to your swatch, get the points to match up between the stitches, then turn the tool until the stitches line up. Once you have the right size, you can use the key above the window on the tool to read the gauge, instead of having to count stitches.

And yes indeed, it works — on both knit and crocheted swatches!

Ready to stitch your way through the plot? The Spin Me a Yarn Literary Society is open for subscriptions! Each quarter, you’ll get yarn dyed to match our featured read, hand-picked goodies, and access to our lively Zoom book club where stitches fly and stories come to life.

Also making a splash: two sun-drenched colorways — Good Vibrations and Soak Up the Sun — and the launch of our Gift Shoppe, stocked with charming finds and perfect little pick-me-ups for yourself or a fiber bestie!

Subscriptions are limited! Claim your seat at the most colorful book club around and snag some gorgeous sun with the spirit of summer.
