Mind Wanderers Yarn Club

This new club for spring is dedicated to that special inner space, where we hide sometimes while knitting, that state of mind when thoughts just flow adrift and make us feel somehow lifted and lightened.

As knitters before being yarnmakers, Giulia and I often search for beautiful yarns and accessories to build our private, personal imaginary room where we can linger knitting in tranquility.

Now, it’s is a bit difficult to describe our vision for this club, as we wish to evoke feelings and perceptions that are by definition very personal and evanescent; in fact, we mean to celebrate delicacy and mild thoughts, when we linger with our needles moving smoothly, and the world seems to be set aside.

We were somehow forced to stay home, and time to reflect and knit became much more frequent than usual, so we rediscovered the beauty and sense of peace that we held in our hands, and minds.

So, the lightness inherent in our very special fibre, Cashmere, is the core of this club. Our Heavenly Blend is hand dyed in a unique ethereal colourway that we created to exalt its fluffiness and let it pass to our souls. We really hope that the hues we decided to dye for this occasion will match also your concept of MIND WANDERER, of flying thoughts and lightened spirits

We worked with two talented Italian artisans to create the right accessories to match both the yarn and our ideas, and we’re so happy with this collaboration!

Again, we created a bundle of evocative, charming and always useful handcrafted pieces, that, we hope, will bring some sheerness to your thoughts and knits

Please make note of a few useful bits of information about the club:

– Subscriptions will be listed in our online shop from May 22, 8 p.m. CEST

– Subscriptions will be open until May 31, unless they sell out before

– Subscriptions consist of only one shipment of the entire bundle that will be scheduled in early June

– As in previoous editions, we decided to list only a limited quantity of bundles, because they are handcrafted especially for this event and all unique

– Each club bundle will include 150g (three full skeins) of our most precious and beloved fingering yarn, a blend of Italian wool, Cashmere and alpaca in their natural grey and fawn hues, that is hand dyed exclusively for the club, and two different accessories, curated by our lovely partners Marcella of Latuamomis and Carla of Laboratorio Indie.

In some places, we are going on month three of social distancing/isolation/sitting at home. I don’t know about everyone else, but spring always causes my Startitis to go crazy anyway, and with having little else to do, well… there are a lot of new projects on my needles! :/

So to help with that, we’ve restocked the shop with project bags! There are cute wintery llamas and sweet honeybees that remind us of all the time we get to spend outdoors (distantly) right now, cheerful yellow poppies, and reminders of how much we miss traveling.

Our lovely fans have chosen Rainy Days to be our May/June Sweater Quantity Discount colorway. This incredible discount is one of the ways we’re working to make our yarns more accessible to makers of every shape and size. Basically, it’s a crowd-funded almost wholesale discount for orders of three or more skeins with a huge variety of bases to choose from. One colorway, preordered by several people at once means we place a large order with our mills, and spend two days of our dyeing time on one colorway, which streamlines our usual small batch process. Signups are open now but will close as soon as we reach our two-day dyeing capacity. Last time it only took a couple of days! If you miss the sign-up window or Rainy Days isn’t for you, be sure to follow us on Instagram or subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to hear about (and help us choose) our next SQD colorway in July.

Foul Temptress – New 1 Skein Spincycle Dyed In The Wool Pattern

Foul Temptress releases the morning of May 15th. The pattern will be on sale for 20% off through May 22nd for an extra tempting release sale.

Yarn, she can be a cruel mistress. You see that one special skein and immediately snatch it up because it MUST be yours, but then you get it home and have absolutely no idea what to do with it. This triangle cowl is the answer to that siren’s call, it just takes 200 yards of Sport or Fingering weight yarn. The pattern was designed specifically with one skein Spincycle Dyed In The Wool in mind because those little color shifting skeins are so beautiful but it can be difficult to find a pattern to show off just one small skein. Since the lace looks great with color shifting yarn, it is also ideal for the handspun yarns you have been hoarding to brew who knows what with.

This cowl is knit top down starting with a basic flat triangle shawl construction, it is then joined in the round for the last few rounds to create a triangle cowl shape. You can even use multiple single skeins up because the pattern includes two different border options; Siren’s Song and Lilith’s Lace. Siren’s Song is shown in Idle Nights (lighter yarn with blue/pink) and Lilith’s Lace is shown in Ruination (darker yarn with purple/green).

DyeSigner Alliance: Session 2! Now Open for Registration!

Enrollment is now open for Session 2 of the DyeSigner Alliance!

Our second session again features two amazing women in the yarn world right now! Their collaboration with us here at Nutmeg Fiber Arts will ship in August, but you must register now.

Our indie dyer is Brooke Sinnes of Sincere Sheep! She’s created something special just for Session 2 of our DyeSigner Alliance for you all! Located in the wine-growing region of Napa, CA, Sincere Sheep continues to be inspired and guided by the concept of terroir. Both wool and natural dyes are agricultural products that depend upon and reflect their environment. Factors during the annual growing cycle such as water, grass, weather and stewardship all impact the quality of the wool clip and plant harvest. You will see the effects in the subtle variation of colors and textures of yarn from year to year. All Sincere Sheep yarn and fiber is dyed using color extracted from plants (and periodically from insects). Dyes are responsibly sourced; some dyestuffs are locally gathered leaves and flowers, as well as agricultural and food “waste” that can be used a second time for their dye properties.

Our Indie designer is Julie Robinson who goes by @julieatwork on Ravelry and Instagram, and creates truly amazing, textural knitting designs. This is the second time we’ve worked with Julie, as she was featured in Issue 4 of our NF Magazine! She’s working hard right now to create a special pattern just for this club, meant to be used with Brooke’s special colorway. We are so thrilled to have Julie join us again for Session 2 of our DyeSigner Alliance!

Session 2 will ship out to you in August, after the dyer and designer have had the time to prepare the lovely items for you all.

Viola Kit Release with KnitSafari

One of the best parts of my job at Sweater Sisters is having the opportunity to work with incredibly talented designers like Tiam Safari of KNITSAFARI Designs. Tiam has worked as a freelance knitwear designer for Wool and the Gang, Hobbycraft, Cygnet Yarns and Knit Picks, and her sparkly fishnet sock pattern was picked up by Vogue.com.au (who listed her as one of the top five knitters to look out for!).

Viola is Tiam’s third design for Sweater Sisters. This incredible sweater pattern is knitted in flat panels that are seamed on the right side with a crochet hook to create a spine effect. The sleeves are worked seamlessly in the round to reduce bulk, and then the V neckline is worked in the round at the end for a professional finish.

Tiam designed this sweater using Wayfaring Yarns Arcadia DK, a beautifully soft 100% Superwash extra fine Merino. I have four colors available for the kit. Three of the colors are inspired by the sands of three unique U.S. beaches and the fourth is inspired by the beautiful blue sky of my hometown, Alta, Wyoming.

Pfeiffer Beach – dusky lavender
Pink Sands Beach – silvery pink
Rockaway Beach – a blend of silvers and browns
Alta – the blue summer sky or your favorite faded blue jeans

These kits come with a built-in sweater quantity discount of 10% and are an additional 5% off through Sunday, May 24th. Sale prices range from $95 for XS-M to $214 for 5XL.

I take all precautions when shipping my yarn to make sure my product is virus-free. However, once it is out of my hands and in the postal system, the package is handled by many hands. I recommend taking the package out of your mailbox with tongs and putting it into a bin for a few days before opening, just to be safe.

Opening the Yarn Alliance — the emails that changed my mind

Something interesting happened last week. A couple of members of our yarn club, The InterStellar Yarn Alliance, emailed to ask if it was time to renew their subscriptions. And the truth is that it was time… in fact, the time to open the club for renewals and new subscriptions was supposed to have happened back in March but, just one week before I was planning to open the doors, the U.S. started to go into shutdown. Suddenly, tons of people were losing their jobs, worried about loved ones, or getting ill, it just didn’t feel right to start cheering about a yarn club.

I honestly wasn’t sure what to do. I thought perhaps it would be better to just let this season’s opening slide and wait until the next season, when I hoped things would be better for everyone. But then those emails came in, from members who said they had so enjoyed being part of the club that they didn’t want their subscriptions to end. Reading that made my heart soar — and shook me out of my indecision.

It should have been obvious to me all along that when times are difficult, we all find comfort in our knitting and crochet: in the rhythm of the stitches, in the feel of the yarn, in the way the colours lift the spirits. And it’s always better when we do it together, whether in person at knit night or safely distanced in the shared experience of a club. So, instead of being a time to shy away from opening the Yarn Alliance, I realised that now is exactly the time to share it.

And so, I opened the Yarn Alliance this week and I’m excited to be able to share this upcoming season with our new members. It’s given me such a positive feeling about the future, a sense that someday it will be safe to end these shutdowns and venture out into the world again, and I’m excited to embark on a new season and dye new colours. Bayou

I am a lover of simplicity. I find myself drawn to sweaters that gracefully balance minimalism with visual interest, and embrace simple lines… sweaters you can live in. As a designer, and a hand dyer, I find inspiration in my surroundings. Bayou found its inspiration in the stillness of the bayous, in their mossy tones, and their striking pops of natural color.

For Bayou, I chose a natural, undyed yarn for the body of the sweater, and I dyed three glorious coordinating colors using magical natural dyes. The natural, undyed colors, are the perfect still water canvas to showcase the beauty of the yoke. The fingering weight yarns make this sweater as light as air with a touch of warmth.

Bayou’s construction matches the simplicity of its design. It is knitted top-down, in the round, mostly in stockinette stitch. The sleeves are knitted in the round from held stitches. Bayou is seamless. The yoke design is a beautiful old shale pattern in three colors, framed by two rows of bobbles. The yoke design sits at mid chest, highlighting the beauty of the neckline, sitting gently on the shoulders. The body and the sleeves have minimal shaping, just a few short rows at the top of the back. Tubular cast on and bind offs contribute to the fluidity of the sweater.

Bayou includes cropped and full length options, as well as three sleeve options: cap, three-quarter and wrist length. Bayou includes sizes ranging from 35” to 69” bust circumference. An arm circumference worksheet is included so you can fit the sleeves perfectly!

The Bayou kits are hand dyed using natural dyes only. The body is knitted in a natural, machine washable yak/Merino/nylon blend, and for the yoke, we chose a machine washable Merino/nylon blend, which we dyed in a range of natural colors.
