I really wanted to come up with a collection that showed off my style of dyeing. I have never been one to “throw dye at a pot.” For me to create I have to feel truly inspired and this is why I have not come out with “new” colorways in a while.

This collection was created to show what inspires me and why I love dyeing yarn so much. Sock blanks will also now be a regular thing as I have finally mustered up the courage to start painting them. When I first started dyeing I hand painted all of my fiber so I felt this to be a natural progression for me. I hope you love this collection as much as I do, I believe it to be my best work yet. Enjoy!!

I’m doing another Choose Your Yarn Adventure Yarn Giveaway this week. Choose your favorite of five lovely yarn bases, all dyed in my A Little Princess colorway. The winner will receive his or her favorite skein.

The bases to choose from include:
*So Silky Sock, which is made of 50% mulberry silk and 50% superwash merino.

*Donegal Sock, which is made of 85% superwash merino and 15% nylon nebs, giving the yarn a lovely tweed look.

*Squoosh DK (my newest yarn base), which is made of 100% extra-soft superwash merino that’s impossible to stop squeezing.

*Donegal DK, which is made of 85% superwash merino and 15% nylon nebs. This is just like Donegal Sock but warmer.

*Buttery Soft DK, which is just so soft. It’s made of 45% baby alpaca, 45% extra-fine merino, and 10% silk.

Fighting the Februry Blues

I’m not a fan of cold weather and by this time of year all I want are the early signs of impending spring. But the color lover in me can’t help but be captivated by the special way the winter light plays on the landscape. The brittle, egg shell quality of the atmosphere and the somber, smoky hues outside inspired a small collection dyed on a new-to-me base, Majuro MCS fingering, and on Mirage kidsilk mohair lace.

There are two separate palettes I think of as The Mountain and the Sea. The first captures my impression of the wintry landscape outside my Catskills home, in the magic hour as the sun begins to set. The second was inspired by memories of a frigid New Year’s Day long ago, spent on the beach on Cape Cod, and the interplay between the icy waters, the bent sea grass on the dunes and the overcast sky. And, of course, what winter color scheme would be complete without a breathless frozen pink?

The Cryptozoologist Shop Update: Spring Fling

The Cryptozoologist is having an update today at 7 p.m. GMT (2 p.m. EST/11 a.m. PST). Once again we’re offering a host of vibrant and exciting colourways all in 100% British BFL/nylon sock yarn.

There’s a literary theme running across some of the yarns this time, with The Gracekeepers and The Gloaming both inspired by the enchanting books of the same name by Kirsty Logan. Since both novels are soaked in seawater and have strong LGBTQ+ themes, it seems fitting that both of these yarns support the Mermaids charity, which helps transgender and gender variant children across the UK. We will be donating £3 from each skein sold to Mermaids.

Elsewhere, new colourway Ketterdam is inspired by the city in Leigh Bardugo’s novels Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. Leigh paints an industrial cityscape with a rich history, and accordingly Ketterdam is full of deep rusts and aged bricks, and speckled with soot.

Also making its debut this update is Velaris, which draws its inspiration from Sarah J Maas’ ACOTAR trilogy. Velaris is also known as the City of Starlight, and this deep rich blue yarn is evocative of clear nights spent watching the stars emerge as Twilight fades into dark. Sally we can’t provide you with your very own Rhys!

Away from the pages of fantasy works – we do have a life outside of books, honest! – there are new colourways in the form of Somnus Flower, a bewitching blend of lavender and aqua accented with pops of pink and yellow, and Roseate, a bright and joyful yarn bringing pinks together with mustard, greens and browns – just the thing for a spring shawl or sock project.

So whether you want to escape to a fantasy realm as you knit, or just pick up a pretty skein or two, why not have a poke about at The Cryptozoologist’s newest additions?
