Long before the lockdown, we started planning for two brand new yarns to add to the ECY stable (actually there are more, but these are the first two!). Rosedale 4ply, a new gold sparkle 4-ply yarn is coming later in April. But first we have Lowther Lace which is coming to the website on Sunday 12th April at 5 p.m. UK time. To see the colourways that will be going live on the website on Sunday you can find an album of these over on flickr.
Lowther Lace is a sumptuous blend of baby suri alpaca and mulberry silk. The alpaca fibre gives this yarn a wonderful cloud-like fuzzy halo and offers a great alternative to mohair. This yarn is ideal for using on its own in both knitting and crochet and can also be held double with other yarns to add a wonderful soft, fuzzy halo. It does not have great stitch definition due to the fuzziness of the fluff so complex lace patterns might get lost in it.
I have recorded a YouTube video about this yarn – I did lots of swatching and stuff so that’s all included. It’s just gone online, so you can view it on the Eden Cottage Yarns YouTube channel. This will be followed up with a blog post with some pattern inspiration and lots of other information about the yarn.
Also over on YouTube you can still find the video recorded going through all the designs in Cat Knits by Marna Gilligan, discussing the techniques, yarns used and possible alternatives. If you missed that, or prefer to read through information in a leisurely fashion, we have also published a blog post with all the same information plus a few extra bits which you can find on the home page on the website. PLEASE NOTE: This Friday and Monday are bank holidays and as such we will be closed. I know it won’t make a difference to a lot of people at the moment but in all honesty I am knackered and ready for a four day break! I’m setting up auto-posts for social media in case I am not online over the weekend, but I’m sure I’ll dip in to the ECY Garden FB group now and then. Between the self-isolation and the snow here in Wyoming, I’ll be doing a lot of knitting this month. Because I’m dreaming of spring, I’ll be knitting with silk blends. I love knitting with and wearing garments made with silk year round.

This month I will be offering WayfaringYarns Shangri-La yarn by the skein. Shangri-La is our finest yarn made of 75% Ultrafine Superwash Merino (the softest merino in the world) and 25% Mulberry Silk. This fingering weight Merino silk blend feels like heaven running through your fingers and is perfect for shawls and any other garment that calls for drape.

All of the silk yarns we offer at Sweater Sisters are specifically Mulberry Silk. You will sometimes hear Mulberry Silk called Bombyx Silk. Bombyx mori is the type of moth that is fed mulberry leaves and the resulting cocoons are spun into raw silk fibers.
Mulberry Silk is pure white, odorless and hypoallergenic because it contains a natural protein called sericin, a byproduct of the mulberry leaves that reduces the possibility of an allergic reaction.

In shipping my yarn to you, know that my product has never been exposed to the virus. I ordered the yarn before Christmas in preparation for Interweave Yarn Fest, which has now been moved to August. I wash my hands thoroughly before handling and wrapping each order.
Once it is out of my hands and in the postal system, keep in mind that the package itself is being handled by lots of hands. I recommend taking the package out of your mailbox with tongs and putting it in a bin for a few days before opening, just to be safe.

Hello to everyone. I hope you and your loved ones are holding up in these trying circumstances. I won’t tell you to be chipper or keep your chin up: I will tell you that I wish you all the best.
Things have been exciting here: I am holed up out of NYC with a dear friend. Since the shop is my only form of income, and most of it is in Brooklyn, I have been scrambling to get ducks in a row. I am safe: I am sheltering in place at home. I have arranged mail runs as part of my grocery run once a week, and I sew in my bedroom, so I am able to keep going for the time being.
I will be focusing on drawstring bags and DPN cases at first. If you have a particular request, PLEASE tell me. My contact form, Instagram DMs, Twitter DMs and email are all open to you, dear customers. If I have access to the fabric in question, I will be happy to sew up a custom bag at no additional cost. (I do hope you’ll understand that my access to fabric is limited at the moment.)
Because I believe strongly in putting my money where my mouth is, KnitSpinQuilt will continue to donate 15% of item prices to charity. In 2020, I have chosen the Ali Forney Center, a charity that works to alleviate homelessness in LGBTQ youth in New York City. The Ali Forney Center cannot close under current circumstances, because it provides housing to at-risk youth, and is in need of support now more than ever.
Please keep safe, keep indoors, and keep on keeping on. This is going to be hard, but the only way forward is through.

Like all your favorite indie dyers, I’ve watched all my spring events get cancelled while I’m surrounded by thousands of skeins of dyed yarn. I’m using this break from the usual demands as a rare chance to just let my imagination go wild, so I’ve issued a personal “New Item of The Day” challenge. Some days this means adding a new base to a beloved colorway, but more often I’m experimenting with brand new things. I’m a little scared of how many more than my current 200 offerings I’ll have on my shop when this is all over! Here are a few of my favorites from the few last weeks.
True to my deep and murky character, I’ve added Guac in both Harbour Singles and Mirage kidsilk lace, along with one of my favorite colors-Destroyed to the Maelstrom Boucle line up. But I can’t ignore the spring awakening that’s going on outside my house in the beautiful Lower Hudson Valley that have inspired new colors like The Winks, Cirrus and Thistle Pass (hope you’ll forgive the bad pun).
