All Dressed Up with No Place To Go

Like many of your favorite indie makers, I’ve watched a busy booked season of shows, yarn crawls and trunk shows grind to a halt. Beyond the loss of income, I have a room filled with skeins waiting to go to their new homes.

One of the items I was most excited to show off is my newest base, Nautilus BFL Aran. Nautilus is a 100% British Bluefaced Leicester with a 2-ply construction that results in a bouncy, lofty fabric that works great in a wide range of needles sizes, from around US #8 to US #11. With great stitch definition, this one would be fabulous for cables and other structured stitch patterns.

On a personal note, I wish you all well in this unprecedented time. I’m using my time to let my creativity have full reign, experimenting with new colors and dyeing techniques, and getting a ton of knitting done. If you are not suffering from financial insecurity, now is a great time to support us small businesses in our beloved industry. I know at least two of the LYS in my community have created GoFundMe campaigns so they can pay their staffs for as long as possible — even though I depend on my dyeing for my income, I managed to find a way to contribute to these. There are opportunities to help if you can afford to do so. I can’t wait ‘til we can all get together again, when we’re on the other side of this.

A Chic & Stormy Blend Update + Isabel Kraemer pattern release!

This month’s update is dedicated to the very first blend we created starting our small company. A Chic Blend now has 17 intense and bright hand dyed semisolid shades, and they will all be listed to be mixed and matched, perfect for your colorwork pleasure.

We conceived this yarn and its vibrant colors to be used in striking stranded knitting and more subtly in combination with our undyed grey shades of the Stormy Blend.

What’s better than a special pattern release dedicated by Isabell Kraemer to these yarns? She is planning to release her Gianluca sweater on Ravelry on Friday, March 20, and a Lanivendole shop update is set for the same day at 6.00pm CEST

In this tragic situation, we are having problems due to shows postponed and wholesale orders put on hold, but still we want be active during this wait, and believe it’s important to bring our woolly pleasures to you, knitters and crocheters around the globe, to stay connected and positive together.

Gauge: 10cm in 24-26 sts and 3.5mm needles

You’ll find all yarns available as ready to ship, unless they go sold out, and will then be dyed on order, don’t worry!

According to current COVID-19 situation, we are working with national post service to be able to ship safely all parcels through Registered Mail service, in order to avoid as much as possible that items are lost on their way. You’ll have the possibility to ship with an express courier service as well, and in that case we’ll update you in case some companies stop/delay their services, and we’ll sort it out together!

Hello! My name is Vanessa Ewing and I own my own hand dyed yarn business called Cape May Fiber Company. My hand dyed yarns are inspired by the sea and shore where I grew up. Taking my fine arts degree and my knowledge of yarns and fibers, my goal is to produce extraordinary colors on yarns that bring joy and comfort to those who knit and wear them. I use traditional acid dye as well as botanical dye to produce one of a kind, small batch colorways.

My newest ad(venture) is an exciting new club, my Botanically Dyed Yarn of the Month Club. Signups are on a running basis, which guarantees you will have a full year of color.

I’m an indie bag maker recently from Wisconsin, formerly from Pennsylvania, and I make everything myself.

The project bags I make are to carry around your knitting, crochet and spinning. I have many shapes, including box bags, pyramids, wedges and backpacks. I make a few bags that snap to hang on spinning wheels or looms in order to hold fiber or tools.

All of the bags are designed by me. I search far and wide for fabric and even have some that I print specifically for my business alone. I always have a variety of prints, some of which don’t stay around long. The fabric baskets and rope bowls are excellent to sit beside your wheel or loom to hold fiber or weaving supplies. I also make stitch markers to hold your place in knitting or crochet. I make orifice hooks for your spinning wheel and crochet hooks with fun handles. The crochet hooks are one of a kind as I play with clay and bake them on the hook. I also just recently have started to blend some different wools together to make batts for sale.
I love doing special orders and I’ve worked with other indie dyers to do collaborations of bags and yarn kits. Please feel free to message me to see about your own collaboration or bag made specifically for you. I also have items that I don’t generally sell online, but if you’ve seen them at a show and you’d like them, message me!

StarKnits was scheduled to vend at Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival in Pittsburgh, PA, March 20-22 and then at YarnCon in Chigago, IL, April 4-5. Both events were canceled due to COVID-19 and I applaud the organizers for being proactive about the health of our community. I’m using my time to take photos and do an update of epic proportions (at least for this one-woman business) starting on the 20th.
