Hi! My name is Beckie, I’m the sole worker bee behind Shirley Brian Yarn… wait what? Your name is Beckie and you’re Shirley Brian Yarns? Huh? Shirley was my grandmother’s name — she was an epic knitter. She made sure that our family was never cold, and that my Barbie had the best knitwear collection in the world. Brian was my father, we lost him much too soon, and this is a way to keep him close daily. And there you have it: SBY.
I live and work with my pup Oliver in Ottawa, ON, Canada, and ship my yarns all over North America (hopefully worldwide soon). I’ve been in the yarn business for the better part of a decade. First as yarn store owner and then, after selling the store, I have been dedicated full time to SBY. I like to write patterns when there is time, I knit constantly and playing with blank yarns and colours is my full-time job and passion.
I like tomatoes, avocados, soup, and wine. I have travelled far and wide and continue to do so as much as I can. Reality TV binges fuel my knitting time and I consume a ridiculous amount of books on Audible monthly. I have a weakness for vintage knitting, spinning and weaving tools and notions, and would be embarrassed if you saw the size of my knitting bag collection.

Sailing Sweater
My Sailing Sweater pattern was recently released on Ravelry. It’s a super simple quick knit and the easiest sweater to throw on for running around in. The pattern includes both completely written and charted instructions, and it is the perfect sweater to knit for those who prefer to work on accessories over garments, as it is like knitting shawl. The pattern is easily adjustable, with clear instructions on complete customization. It’s a super quick knit, too! I’ve just completed a navy blue version in a week!

Summer is upon us and the lambing season is finally done. If you are looking for a lightweight yarn to knit with this summer, our hand-dyed wool, linen and silk blend is perfect. I just finished Wave by Kristen Finlay with our wool, linen and silk blend and it knit up beautifully.
We are participating in the Save Em to Save Em Campaign and we have raw Shetland and Leicester Longwool as well as Leicester Longwool yarn. We will have Shetland yarn for the fall festival season.

Hello to those of you who just discovered my company and to all my longtime followers! I’m excited to be part of the Indie Untangled Marketplace!
I thought I’d take the opportunity to let you know a little more about me and my growing business. Eight years ago, I learned to crochet, and then to knit, launching what was then called Adella’s Crochet Cottage while my husband Jimmy was teaching in Afghanistan. Like many of you, I became obsessed with all of the different colors, textures and compositions of the different yarns I’d come across. Frustration with not being able to get quality yarns locally, and the discrimination I sometimes faced in yarn shops, further strengthened my desire to dye my own yarn. So, I did.
Dyeing came very naturally to me and I was encouraged by my friends and family to start my own business and sell my hand-dyed creations. The rest is history.
After the birth of my daughter, I realized that I had much more to live for and be grateful about. I decided to rebrand my company in honor of my little princess, in hopes that one day I would be able to pass something down to her and keep the legacy alive. As a woman of color, I want to show my daughter, and hopefully inspire others, that we can achieve success regardless of the circumstances.
A lot has happened as Lola, and my business, has grown…
I’m in the middle of prepping for my first big show — Stitches United in Atlanta, just a couple hours from my home and studio in Grovetown, Georgia. If you’re planning to go, please stop by Booth 623 (see the map here) and say Hi!
You can get a sneak preview of what I’ll be bringing to the show (and, of course, photos of my biz’s adorable namesake) on Instagram. I’ll be bringing some of my most popular colorways, like Steampunk, Queen Bean and Funny Bones, as well as some new ones, plus a new Georgia Peach enamel pin from Shelli Can.
If you’re not able to make it, I will be having an online event that will run from May 30th to June 2nd. All of my colors, even seasonal ones, will be available for preorder on several different bases. I’ll be donating 20% of sales during this event to pediatric cancer research through the D10 competition, a major athletic event that my uncle Duane is participating in on June 8 in NYC (his goal is to bench press 175 lbs. 20 times in a row!).

The second round of Advent Calendar signups will open this Saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m. PDT!
This year’s calendar will be a mash up of our Great British Baking Show yarn and charm club and our Afternoon Tea Collection. Think: baked goods, warm wintery colors, and tea-inspired colorways.
Each calendar will have 24 20g minis and one 100g skein of yarn, all on our Darjeeling Sock base (75/25 Superwash Merino/nylon), and will be accompanied by three patterns written just for this year’s calendar, something special from Pinecone Ceramics and a few extra goodies thrown in for good measure. You’ll have the choice of either knit, crochet, or both if you’d like so that the patterns are geared toward your fiber craft of choice!
Thank you all for the wonderful reception of my Suavest Sheep! After working on a project with a very short loose end I decided it was time to grow the family to include a smaller size. Thus the Lovable Lambs were born! This new addition to your herd is perfect for both thinner and shorter loose ends. The lambs function best when wrapped in six inches to one yard of lace, fingering, or sport weight yarn.
I designed these lambs to corral your loose ends close to your work or carry spare yarn for color matching, repairs, or for the joy of having a bit of your favorite yarn always within reach. Each lamb and sheep is printed on a 3D printer in my studio using PLA (polylactic acid – a plastic made from plants which is renewable and non-toxic)

This month’s colorways are based on a photo of a tile that newsletter subscriber Cindy received, which is a beautiful mix of colors. It immediately fueled my imagination on all the different colorways I could create.
I’m so happy with how this month’s colorways turned out, because I think I really nailed those tile colors :-D. All four of them work well together for colorwork, and of course individually.
Bright magenta/purple is “Create Your Self,” Soft Gray with a tinge of pale pink here and there is “Infinite Possibilities,” rich royal blue is “You Only Live Once” and a pretty speckle of pinks, blues, grays along with some of the yellows and oranges in the tile is “Imagine It Real.”
All four are available for preorder from now through May 26, or while supplies last. All orders will ship out by no later than the week of June 24, 2019.
You have your choice of two bases this month: Birte, DK weight Superwash Merino, Cashmere and silk, and Verdande, Worsted weight of the same blend. Be sure to choose the correct base from the drop-down menu on each product page.
