I have always loved the holidays. I love cold weather, I love snow (when I’m lucky enough to be in it), and I love celebrating in every way. I think it’s the cheeriness of the lights and decorations when everything else can seem a bit drab. I’ll take cheer wherever I can get it, and I think a holiday project bag is a great place to start.

My new collection of holiday bags features some really lovely prints and lots of festive touches like jingle-bell zippers that actually jingle! I have bags that are both Christmas-themed as well as ones that are more generally winter themed, in the traditional “Ho ho ho!” colors as well as more subtle palettes. I hope there’s something for everyone, and especially something for you! One would make the sweetest gift for your crafty bestie, or the sweetest celebration of the time you take out for yourself this season to breathe, relax, and create.

Happy making, and happy holidays.

All books, magazines, and craft supplies will be 20% off starting on Friday, November 22 and ending at midnight on Monday, December 2nd. (Any previous discount codes do not apply and purchase of gift cards is excluded).

There are so many good things in the shop right now for gift giving or for yourself. I’ve put together a gift guide on my blog so take a look at that if you are looking for ideas. Lots of new knitting and crochet books, cross stitch kits from Pigeon Coop, sashiko supplies and books, gift making and gift wrapping books, and crafting books for kids. Also check out gift wrapping options, tote bags and gift cards!

There will be more holiday promotions coming over the next few weeks, so be sure to follow Red Hen Books on Instagram and sign up for my newsletter on the website.

Happy Crafting!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks, and they’ve been… interesting.

A lot has been happening and that’s not just around the world, it’s definitely the case at TVY too!

We’ve published a couple of new patterns, which were designed as an ode to the brightness of moon in the night sky and its many phases. It was designed in a Mohair Lace and DK combination, to evoke the etherealness often connected to the moon and its position in spirituality, fantasy and science. Working with yarns held together and separated stitches to produce the pattern gives a lightness to both the hat and cowl. Though as you can see, it’s also very happily knit in worsted using Roosimine to bring out the motifs. You can find them on Payhip and Ravelry:

With all the patterns also on our Patreon

We’ve also revealed the full shawl for our birthday Mystery Knit Along that took place from August to October. So if you prefer to wait to see the final shawl before starting, you can check out more of the pictures of the Parallelo Shawl on Payhip and Ravelry. The pictures were taken on a little trip to the Lothians to spend some time zine swapping, gaining inspiration and organising for some of the community-focused work that we’re doing here in Scotland with some other wonderful people.

As a reminder we do an End of Year Box every year, as a way of seeing the year out and looking forward to the next, and it’s your last chance to make sure you get one!

This year we’re doing things a little differently, and along with the option to choose between the main skein of the yarn club or a club box there are two upgrade options:

Either add the Adventurer’s Backpack Option, with fabric designed by us inspired by Winter Nights and Guiding lights, and made by @Kallokshekellen, to go with your main skein of yarn.

Or add the main End of Year Club Box, A Light in the Darkness. Which this year is themed around collective action and hope, with a community focus. £5 from each box sold goes directly to Mutual Aid. To go along with your main skein you will receive a number of extras that are chosen to connect with the theme but are also relevant to a yarn box.

Or you could add both and get a beautiful bag, yarn and all the extras.

Sign-ups close this weekend!

Speaking of bags….
The first batch of our Atlas bags in a new colourway have snuck their way into the shop. Each one uses it’s own unique section of hand-dyed fabric so they are all individual and once each one is purchased that’s it! Atlas is a crossbody bag with a hefty capacity, it has an internal patch pocket and a split ring to pop your keys on. The crossbody strap is also adjustable up to 150cm for great access in body size.

NEW – American Sourced 100% Wool Throws

The perfect sustainable gift! FARM FRESH Wool Throw Blankets – made from our super soft 18-micron Rambouillet wool that was grown on USA family-owned farms. It was spun into yarn by a fourth-generation family woolen mill in Michigan, then sent to another family woolen mill in Prince Edward Island, Canada, to be woven into luscious throw blankets. The blankets are 52″ X 76″ and are white with a stunning black tweed stripe 4″ stripe down the length. This blend of black and white presents as a charcoal grey.

One Throw Blanket = 11 bales of hay for the flock
(Our critters consume 14 bales of locally-grown hay per day from October-May when our pastures are resting. Your support puts hay in the barn and employs both the Mitchell team and the local hay grower.)

$189 each plus shipping
Quantities are LIMITED – purchase here

Mitchell Wool Co is a sustainable family farm that raises their own Cormo and Targhee fine wool flock in Michigan. Their mission is to support the American wool effort through planet-supportive conscious craft. MWC’s breed-specific, non-Superwash yarns are exclusively dyed with plants and food waste. The flocks both on their own farm as well as those they partner with are humanely raised with loving care. MWC emphatically rejects the practice of mulesing. They support small farms across the country by buying their fleeces at ethical rates and they employ the local community with a fair living wage. All partners that work with Mitchell Wool are held to this same standard so that you can enjoy conscious craft through a sense of devoted community.

Preorders for my November colorway of the Georgia O’Keeffe Yarn Club are now open. We are venturing into new territory and looking at “Above the Clouds, I” from 1964. This painting features a lovely sky above a sea of clouds, with the yarn featuring blues, a pop of peach and resist areas for clouds.

Orders cut off on Saturday, November 23rd (end of day). Orders will ship between the 28th and the 2nd of the next month. This order will come with your yarn base of choice and a fact card. All club goodies are for subscribers only. If you wish to subscribe, there is a link on my website.

You can now shop my Holiday bag collection. I opened preorders but also have some ready-to-ship bags in stock.

You can choose between a small tote and large drwawsting bag with spruce tees or shop the new candy button design.

If you like using reusable wrapping this season, look no further than a small drawstring bag printed with spruce trees. This size also works well for a hat or sock project.

Let me know if your purchase is a gift and I can include a note.

If you are looking for unique gift for the maker or fiber artist in your life, the online store has some lovely bags in stock.

Finding joy and community in times that feel like darkness is encroaching from every side is the way we find light in that darkness. Working together to be each others ports in the storm and building together so that no one has to suffer that storm.

Part of the end of year box has always been about looking back at the past year, then looking forward to things to bring with you and work towards in the new year. In that, this end of year box is no different. A Light in the Darkness is a collection of extras that look back at this year and hold space for our feelings about it, whilst encouraging us to move forward with intention, and of course the pretty yarn doesn’t hurt either! Sign-ups are open until the 15th of November.

Previous boxes have included stitch markers, a solo journalling/creating game about processing and speaking hope into yourself for the next year, dice, wool wash, pins, yarn and more.

On a lighter note and as a reminder to find Joy, I want to share some of the pictures taken this past weekend, whilst spending time with friends I’m organising with. I designed and launched a Mystery Knit Along this summer to celebrate nine years of Third Vault Yarns, and here it is fully revealed. If it’s something that you might like to put your needles to making, you can find the pattern on Patreon, Payhip and Ravelry.
