Newburgh Yarn Co. presents The Art Of Knitting, a limited-edition sock set inspired by depictions of knitters in 19th & 20th century paintings. February’s set is inspired by Girl Knitting by Marguerite Stuber Pearson. Sets launch monthly and are ready to ship the first of every month at 10am ET. Sets are dyed on Soft Sock, 4ply fingering weight, with 85% Superwash Merino and 15% Nylon. One full skein has 437 yards/100 grams and one mini skeins has 87 yards/20 grams.

The Sphinx has many stories from all over the land, each unique to their culture but the image of a large feline with human facial features is known all over the world.

This may be the last folklore creature we dive into, but it also could be the most well known. The Sphinx has many stories from all over the land, each unique to their culture but the image of a large feline with human facial features is known all over the world.

Immediately you probably go to the Great Sphinx of Giza, so did I.

The first stories are thought to be from as early as the third millennium BCE. They were used in imagery all over the cradle of life, Egypt, Greece, Persia, Babylon, even East Asia but the one I was drawn too was the story of the Egyptian sphinxes (1999’s The Mummy with Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser still has a chokehold on me).

They’re often seen with the body of a lion, resting guarding and a stoic man’s face often wearing a pharaonic headdress and false beard painted with reds, bright blues and yellow. They stood guard as protectors of the royals, often built to guard their royal tombs as they were believed to be a creature of good. They’re most often represented by the god Ra, the fatherly god and father of the pharaohs. They were the defenders against evil, Ra’s enemies, literal forces of darkness. Other forms were tributed to Amon with rams horns of a ram, or with the head of a falcon and wings to be from the god Horus

The Greek story of the Sphinx is where their love for riddles originates. A Sphinx made her home outside the mountains of Thebes and confronted every person who walked across her path with a riddle. If they answered incorrectly they were devoured. After years of many nobles dying, Oedipus was sent and solved the riddle leading the Sphinx to throw herself off the cliff to her death.

The Coterie Sweater is inspired by the Coterie Shawl, a pattern I designed in honor of Local Yarn Shop Day 2022.

Coterie is a celebration of all the things that I cherish most about local yarn shops. Defined as an intimate group with a unifying common interest or purpose, Coterie conveys what I personally found at my LYS. These yarn shops are amazing places that foster our community of fiber enthusiasts and are the lifeblood of our craft. They need support from their community during these difficult times.

The Coterie Sweater is knit seamlessly, and worked from the top down, beginning with a twisted rib neckline. The round yoke features an elegant lace panel to add delicate and feminine detail to your sweater, and the stockinette body leads to an easy-to-customize split hem with twisted ribbing. I added extra length to the ribbing at the back of my sweater so I could confidently wear it with my favorite leggings! As you gently shape the sleeves, you’ll add extra decreases to create a gentle puff at the wrist before knitting the twisted rib cuff.

The lace stitches are both fully written and the repeat is charted, so you can use the type of instructions you are most comfortable with.

Let’s Spring out of Winter with a Make-a-long! This one is going to be so much fun! Carolyn, Michelle, Maria and even Monica are all going to participate. We hope to share each of our unique perspectives as we knit along: Carolyn is pretty experienced and Michelle is, too, but she’s pretty busy and we all know she doesn’t swatch. Maria likes to wander around and make unexpected modifications. This will be Monica’s first knit garment. We are so excited for her to take this plunge with us! And whether you are an experienced knitter or a newbie, we hope you will, too!

So, let’s see it! What are we knitting? We picked the Eun Sweater by Ane Fiskum Sunde, a Norwegian designer with a fresh modern style. This is a top-down pullover with a deep split hem, and pretty ribbing details. It’s absolutely perfect for layering, making it a great choice to transition from winter to spring. The DK weight yarn will knit up quick, so you can wear it sooner…and later. Check out the yummy palette of colors we’ve selected for kits. We are happy to help you determine yardage for your perfect fit.

We’ve also got a restock of Woolf, from our Gilded Ewe Collection, a blend of 70% grey alpaca, 20% silk and 10% Cashmere, three gorgeous shades: Potions, Cause I’m Happy, and Mocha. Woolf, paired with a hank of Twain, you can make some gorgeous, luxurious DK weight socks.

Have you seen our new viral Yarn To Go Carousel?

Well, fun fact friend, it took me SEVEN tries (aka prototypes) before I finally had a version that I thought was good enough for you.
With each try, I would spend a couple of days knitting with it and putting it through its paces to see what annoyed me.
Because I knew if it annoyed me, it would annoy you too.

I’d think I finally had it down, but then the yarn would get tangled around the base…
Or wrap around the spindle top and when I yanked the yarn to get it spinning, it slid off the table. ????‍♀️

But after trying the seventh prototype in every situation I could think of, what I finally got was the most multifunctional yarn holder I’ve ever used.
(It’s kind of magical actually.)

Set it on a table.
Hang it from your wrist.
Knit in your favorite chair.
Knit in the doctor’s office or at the park.
Anyhow. Anywhere.
And when you’re done, fold it up flat and stash it in your bag.
