December Vincent van Gogh is Live!

As the year comes to a close, it’s time for one last Vincent van Gogh colorway. It’s only fitting to use his last painting, “Wheatfield with Crows,” as the inspiration. The painting features deep blues and golds with bits of green and browns, and the yarn is dyed similarly.

This order will ship before I travel for the holidays, but is NOT guaranteed by Christmas. Package will include the skein and a fact card about the artwork. This listing does NOT include any of the extra goodies that are for the yarn club subscribers.

You may preorder as many skeins as you wish from the selected bases. Preorders will end on December 15th to give me enough time to dye and ship packages before traveling for the holidays.

It snowed here in Pittsburgh the other day — big fat flakes that swirled around in the air as if they had all the time in the world and weren’t sure if they wanted to land — and in that moment, it felt like we had suddenly plunged into Officially Winter.

And I’m so glad. It’s time for the holidays, for heavier yarns, and for cosy nights with my knitting and steaming cup of tea. You too?

So I’ve made you a little something to celebrate the season: a digital Advent calendar counting down from the 1st of December until Christmas, with a link each day to a beautiful, free knitting pattern to inspire your end of the year (or beginning of next year) projects.

Some of the patterns are simple, some are complicated, some you might know, and some you might not, but together they make for a delightfully knitworthy way to mark the next 25 days. And so this calendar is our gift to you, from the all of us on the SpaceCadet Crew.

Corriedale Collaboration With SpaceCadet and Ross Farm

Now that it’s winter and and the season of delightfully woolly yarns, I have a real treat for you! A while ago, I asked my friend Amy at Ross Farm Fiber if we could collaborate to create something a little different and very, very special…

Ross Farm, a sixth-generation farm in rural western Pennsylvania, specialises in heritage breeds of livestock, and spinning amazing yarns from their sheep. And Amy had just sheered the fleeces of a herd of Corriedale sheep that she had rescued and had them spun into beautiful skeins of worsted yarn.

Now, these yarns are not for everyone, I know. They’re very different from what we usually dye at SpaceCadet: thick and very rustic, non-Superwash, delightfully springy when you squeeze them, and with lots of good farm-y crunch to the fibers.

But if you love heritage breeds, love the realness of locally-raised, locally-processed, rare-breed wool… these skeins are something very special.

And even as we started dyeing them, they showed just how special they are: the natural state of the Corriedale wool, the lanolin content, and the gentle variations in the plies meant the yarns took the dye so differently that every single skein is its own unique piece of art. I honestly can’t stop looking at them!

We’ve dyed them in seven beautiful, muted hues that are perfect for the wintery days to come — a dozen skeins in each colour. And we loved the results so much, we added in a couple of our standard yarns as well: SpaceCadet Elara, a lovely soft bulky-weight yarn, and Oriana, a vibrant fingering yarn.

When Jade and I were taking the photos, I’ll be honest… it was really hard not to just bag them back up again and keep them all for ourselves! But tempting as that was, we’re putting them all in the shop to share with you. And believe me, they’re worth snapping up!

What About the Other 1,399 Sheep Breeds?

Did you know there are around 1,400 sheep breeds? And that more than 50% of the world’s wool is Merino?

Tunis is one of the other 1,399 breeds. It nearly became extinct during America’s Civil War and currently is on the Livestock Conservancy’s Conservation Priority List — meaning it’s existence isn’t out of the woods yet. With its long history, Kelly’s Tunis yarn is a perfect choice for natural dyes — and for you to start exploring the wonderful world of wool.

This wool has a nice warmth to its color — more ivory or cream — which gives a brightness to yellows and oranges, and a softness to other colors. It’s fairly soft, but some might feel it’s a little scratchy for next-to-skin wear. Its chunky weight makes it perfect for quick, sturdy sweaters, hats, etc. It’s lofty and lightweight courtesy of being woolen spun. (This yarn was spun in Frankenmuth, MI). The sweater shown is Amy Christoffers’ Felix pullover with the gauge adjusted. See the Kelly’s Tunis product page for more pattern suggestions.

Kelly lives near Ann Arbor, MI, and the wool for this yarn came from her Tunis sheep, which were shorn by my brother, Kirk. Kelly no longer has these sheep, so this is a really special, limited-edition batch of yarn in so many ways.

The name Tunis describes the breed’s connections to foundation stock from Tunisia in North Africa. North African sheep, variously described as “fat tailed,” “broad tailed,” and “Barbary” sheep, were imported to the United States as a gift by the Bey of Tunis to George Washington in the late 1700s. They nearly became extinct during the Civil War. Visit The Livestock Conservancy website to learn more about this breed’s interesting history.

Our Newest Natural Black Yarns

Our two new natural black yarns — La Brea and Carbonado — are now available in the online shop. Each one offers a different take on undyed yarn in natural black!

Named for the famous tar pits of Los Angeles, La Brea is a rustic worsted-weight yarn made from 100% Navajo-Churro wool. Navajo-Churro sheep are a dual-coated breed with a downy undercoat and a hairy outercoat. Some of the sheep fleeces used to create this yarn had white overcoats and black undercoats, leading to the smattering effect you see in the final yarn, which blends both coats together.

Carbonado is a sportweight yarn and a restock on a reigning favorite. It’s a tri-blend yarn, with its main ingredient being true black alpaca. This fiber helps give the yarn its dark hue and smooth feel. The yarn also contains Gotland sheep wool, which adds a silver shine and halo, and Coopworth-cross wool, which helps keep everything together!

Embrace the black sheep of the world with either of these beautiful yarns!
