Have you ever created something for others based on a memory you share together?

We’ve been going to Lopez Island, Washington, as a family since we were children. My grandparents had a home there and we have so many memories of our visits. Lopez is a magical place of unspoiled beauty with moody seas and verdant forested hills. I wanted to capture the beauty of the Island in yarn to create Christmas gifts for my family so we would all have a concrete memory of a place we love so much.

After some experimentation I came up with “Slo-pez.” A nod to the slower pace of life on the Island (and not a name I came up with!), Slo-pez has all of the inky blue and teal colors of the sea, mossy greens of the hiking paths, and deep greens of the forested hillsides that encapsulate the Island. Of course I had to throw in a little rust to round things out and make this colorway perfectly “Pacific Northwest.”

I was so lucky to be able to join my brother and his family on Lopez to ring in 2020, and we hiked out to a bay on New Years Day to take this photo of us wearing our Slo-pez hat and headband together.

My webshop update this week includes Slo-pez on several base yarns: Simple Worsted, Delightful DK, 2 Ply Bouncy Fingering, Cashmere Blend Fingering, Silky Cashmere Fingering and Magic Mohair.

The update will be “Live” on Friday, January 24 at 10 a.m. Mountain Standard Time.

2020 rings in the 11th year of business for mom-owned Slipped Stitch Studios!

We’ve come a long way from sewing project bags out of JOANN scraps at nap time on the kitchen table, to the lovely team and studio we have now. We are still quite small, but it works best that way.

We are so proud of all the indie designers and yarn dyers that we get to collaborate with. In 2019, we realized that over half of our inventory is shop-designed or indie-designed fabric! You can’t get this stuff anywhere else!

We have grown our product line from a single project bag size, pattern magnets and needle cases, to seven sizes of project bags ranging from Mini to our Extra Large Tote. We also have two types of needle and hook organization (large and small), a Needle Nook to keep your double-point, hook and circular projects in check while they are on the needles, and Yarn Socks to keep your yarn from getting tangled. Patty Lyons fans alone helped us bring back the Pattern Wallets out of retirement in 2018 and they are better than ever! Finally, we have expanded to sourcing and creating tons of unique stitch markers, Stitch Kits, and supplies! It’s been a busy 11 years, and we have so much more planned!

This weekend in Huntington Beach, California, we will be hosting a birthday party in the studio! Everyone is welcome to come on over and check out what we do and where we do it. We will have sales, door prizes, snacks and fun! The famous mobile yarn shop, the Yarnover Truck, will be at the shop to provide everyone with their daily does of fiber, and Parlez Vous Crochet will be in the shop with her beautiful and unique crocheted jewelry line!

If you can’t make it, no worries! You can celebrate our birthday from the comfort of your home! Use coupon code: HAPPY11BDAY to get $11 off your order of $60 or more! Offer good now until Sunday at midnight.

Alisa of KnitSpinQuilt and Debbie of Murky Depths Dyeworks have teamed up again to create another exclusive, limited edition kit — The Magnolia Kit.

We were both drawn to this Arts and Crafts Movement-style print, evocative of the textiles of William Morris. The claret colored magnolias with pop of magenta offset by the grey eucalyptus leaves are sure to bring a glimpse of springtime straight to your door.

THE BAG
You have your choice of either a medium (sock) or a large (shawl) drawstring bag.
The sock bag measures 10″ x 7″ x 3″. It will hold one or two skeins of yarn, great for a hat, sock or other small project.
The shawl bag measures 13″ x 8″ x 4″. It will hold two to four skeins of yarn, perfect for a shawl or small sweater.
We selected a claret satin ribbon with a picot edge as the perfect complement to the fabric.

THE YARN
You have your choice of one or two skeins of this gorgeous hand-dyed yarn.
Deep Sock is a soft, springy two-ply yarn with great stitch definition. Next-to-skin softness makes it perfect for garments and the added nylon makes it suitable for socks and other hard wearing items. These are 400 yds per 100 gram skeins of 80% SW Merino wool and 20% nylon.

SHIPPING DETAILS
This item is a PRE-ORDER. Orders will open on Friday, January 24 and close on Friday, February 7. Kits will ship on or before Friday, March 6. We know that’s a bit of time to wait, but we need to be certain we can deliver the highest-quality product possible, so we’re setting a conservative timeline to be sure!

We will be donating 5% of all sales to Direct Relief, an international charity doing work in Puerto Rico to assist with hurricane and earthquake recovery.

Lisa K. Ross, the talented designer behind Paper Daisy Creations, started the #LotsOfSocks Initiative last year in her Ravelry group as a way to raise funds and awareness for Down Syndrome. Over $21,000 was raised!

I’m proud to once again be a sponsor for this event and thrilled that Lisa has chosen to use our #LotsOfSocks Halfsies colorway for her soon-to-be-released featured design this year. See the second pic for a sneak peek! Blue and yellow are the Down Syndrome colors, which inspired our choice for the Halfsies sets. There are two 50g skeins in in each set, for a total of 100g/400yds.

Our #LotsOfSocks colorway is now available in the shop. We will be donating $3 from each set sold to National Down Syndrome Society. That amount will increase to $5 per set if/when 20 sets are sold! Donation will be made on March 21 and will be for all skeins sold through March 20, 2020.

If you’re not familiar with the program, here’s an glimpse at what Lisa has posted in her Ravelry group:

“Do you know about the #lotsofsocks initiative? Those with Down syndrome have a 3rd copy of chromosome 21, so on 3/21 (March 21) the world celebrates World Down Syndrome Day. The idea behind #lotsofsocks is that everyone wears two different colorful socks to highlight the uniqueness of these individuals and show their support for the Down syndrome community. This KAL was designed to create LOTS of socks that will also generate support and awareness for a great cause! Tag your Ravelry projects #lotsofsocksKAL.

SALE INFO:
Each day from February 5-19, a different featured designer will have a sock pattern on sale for 50% off. Some of these are new designs and some will be their existing designs… each day will be a surprise! On that day, ALL sales of the highlighted design will go to supporting Down Syndrome International. I have a ton of new products for you this year. I have expanded my in-house hand-dyed yarn line to include Snow City Yarns, alpaca and alpaca blend bases in soft luxurious colors and Au Naturale, extra fine untreated Merino dyed up in ultra saturated colors. The Au Naturale non-Superwash yarn is available in 25g and 50g skeins, perfect for all your colorwork needs. Come and squeeze these new yarns. You won’t believe how soft and luxurious they are.

Winter is here but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream of spring! I have released a new colorway to help us all do just that. “Beneath Wandering Thoughts” is inspired by a bright pink and green painting of the same name, with pops of purple and yellow to brighten the mood even more.

Available in my light, sock and silky single bases, this colorway is sure to help do away with the winter blues.

Happy New Year! We’re celebrating with lots of gorgeous new colorways! Plus, we’ve dyed up old favorites too.
