The long-awaited Tucson bandana cowl is finally available for purchase as an individual pattern! This lightweight cowl is perfect for cool fall evenings, and I promise as you knit you’ll want to keep knitting just one more round to watch the mesmerizing stranded paisley motif emerge. It’s colorwork perfection! To achieve the classic bandana shape, you’ll start the cowl working flat and then will join in the round for all the colorwork, and then you’ll bind off with a stretchy Icelandic bind off.

This sample features the silky smooth Merino silk blend Paloma by Less Traveled Yarn in one skein of Cabinwood and one of Devil’s Bridge, but be sure to check out the Ravelry project pages for other color combination inspiration.

This pattern was originally featured in the book Handmade: Slow Fashion Inspired by Arizona’s Five Cs, and I’m thrilled to be able to offer it as a single pattern for you!

Shooting these photos in the graffiti’d underbelly of one of Pittsburgh’s many bridges, a middle-aged guy in dirty shoes and three-day old stubble walks past us.

He takes one look at our model, overdressed amongst the broken bottles and remnants of late-night meetups, and we brace ourselves as he opens his mouth and yells…

(wait for it…)

“THAT’S A REALLY NICE WRAP!”

Well. That’s not what we were expecting him to say…

But honestly, he’s right. Because this pattern is so eye-catching that, despite all our cynical expectations, it completely deflected his attention — so that the shawl received his unsolicited comments instead of our model.

And so we yelled back, “Thanks!” as we continued on with the photoshoot, and the sun shone through the old bridge’s ironwork, and a gentle breeze blew all the tension away.

The Deflection Wrap uses a chevron structure and textured stitches to show off the incredible ombre and gradient colour flow of a full year of bundles from the SpaceCadet Mini-Skein Club. And for one week only, you can get the pattern at an awesome 25% off!

It’s still Socktober and we’re still all about the socks! This week, we’ve got new Whimsy (OOAK colorways) expanded sock sets in the shop and new colorways for our Cranky Sock Kits!

Not sure what a Cranky Sock Kit is? We can assure you it’s not a pair of ill-tempered socks; these kits are your portal to super quick socks. Each kit contains a cranked sock tube in your choice of colorway, a coordinating mini for coordinating heels and toes and a scannable code to FREE downloadable directions for how to transform your tube into a pair of fabulous socks, perfect for gifting or simply filling your own hand-knit sock drawer!

Our Whimsy expanded sock sets come with two perfectly coordinated minis to offer you maximum versatility with color!

So many socks, so much fun!

Oops, Socktober is nearly over but the best laid plans often go awry. We had hoped to have an update of sock yarn out at the beginning of the month but as many of you know Victoria had been ill on and off for the past couple of months, culminating in being off with COVID. After recovering Victoria was able to photograph the update of Brimham 4ply so that it could go live on the website. There are 100g skeins and 20g mini skeins with lots of options of yarn packs in lots of colour combinations. Some of these have been curated for use in MKALs too. Brimham 4ply is our extrafine Merino/nylon sock yarn, which is super-soft, squishy, and strong. It honestly does tick all the boxes.

We have also added Silverdale DK to the website to coincide with the latest issue of Moorit. In this issue there is a design from Sandra Guttierez aka Nomad Stitches which uses two colours of this yarn (Loganberry and Charcoal) in a striking colourblock sweater (shown in the images, photo copyright Moorit and Amelia Claudia Photography). Issues of Moorit are available from many stockists — including Indie Untangled — as well as directly through the Moorit website. Silverdale DK is a blend of Merino, nylon and silver Stellina and it is available on our website now.

We had a stock take of all our printed patterns recently and found that we have quite a lot of older stock. As we are moving more towards digital patterns we have decided to put these on sale. We have added a new heading to the Pattern menu for Reduced Printed Patterns so that they are nice and easy to find.

Finally, there are a LOT of postal strikes coming up between now and Christmas. It’s going to cause a lot of delays for small businesses like us who don’t have contracts with other couriers. What I would say is please consider choosing “courier” as your shipping option at checkout if you’re concerned about timing — that doesn’t speed us up (we already work as fast as we can!) but it should speed up the actual delivery. And… it’s not too early to be thinking about Christmas presents now — seriously! If that’s something that’s going to stress you out it is worth starting now — not just yarn, but anything that you’re ordering online, especially from small businesses.

Welcome to a new year of La Società delle Giardiniere, our secret club of surprise boxes that will delight you throughout 2023! This year’s theme is Tools, Notions & More!

Once upon a time, in a country, but not yet a nation, called Italy, there was a secret society composed only by women: La Società delle Giardiniere, The Club of Women Gardeners. La Società delle Giardiniere was the female branch of Carboneria, a network of secret revolutionary societies active in Italy at the beginning of the 19th century. Their main goal and aim was to free Italy from oppressors and reunite the peninsula in a unique nation, which happened in 1861.

The Republic of Italy, as we know it nowadays, was established in the aftermath of World War II, in 1946, after an historical referendum that saw, for the first time, women voting.

As always the history of women is neglected in most history books.

For many reasons women do not make it to the short or longer version of history. Women are almost invisible. Most of the time women were working behind the scenes, in secret, covered up in crinoline and tea parties, surrounded by children.

This year I invite you to discover with me the stories of four women, with four surprise boxes dedicated to them. Each box will have an array of gifts and collectables notions that will make you happy, fulfilled, and chic at your next knit event!

Become part of our secret society: subscribe today!

The images you see are the inspiration behind my choices for this club: throughout 2023 you will receive four surprise boxes with unique stitch markers, and other tools and notions that are out of the ordinary. Two random boxes throughout the year will have a handmade fabric surprise.

You can choose to trust me for an entire year (and you won’t be disappointed) or buy just one box!

Deliveries will be:
1st instalment – End of January 2023
2nd instalment – End of April 2023
3rd instalment – End of July 2023
4th and last instalment – End of October 2023

Just in time for sweater weather, designer Sharon Hartley (@riverroadknits on Instagram) has released her Dark Academia sweater, available now on Ravelry. Knit in my Deep Sock base, this top-down, circular sweater is inspired by dusty libraries, autumn’s chill, and (of course) gothic architecture. The subtle puff of the bishop sleeve adds a bit of flair to the simple silhouette. This size-inclusive pattern comes in 10 sizes, up to a 66.5” bust. I’m offering kits in the original No More Shall We Part with Never Enough Thyme color combo, along with four other haunting options. Bonus, if you are attending the Indie Untangled trunk show, you can see Sharon’s original sample in person.

In other news, if you can’t make it to the Indie Untangled show this year, no need for FOMO. I am taking preorders on my 2022 show color, Mountain Majesty, inspired by the local flora this beautiful time of year on both my Deep Sock and my Neptune Merino DK bases. Register for free and head on over to my Indie Untangled Everywhere virtual booth from October 14-November 1 for a link to my listing for Mountain Majesty.
