With summer flying by and fall just around the corner, I thought that we could all use a little friendly reminder to take it easy once in a while. That’s why I’ve invited our newest limited edition friends, the Sincere Sloths, to join the end minder family

The Sincere Sloths are sure to make you smile as they swing along your stitches. They’ll tame your yarn tails, hold joins secure, and act as a softhearted swatch for handy repairs or easy yarn shopping. Sloths are nature’s advocate for slow living. Each time you use them, I hope you’ll be reminded to take a mindful moment away from the daily hubbub.

Swing over to website or mosey into my booth at a festival to treat yourself before they disappear at the end of September!

Our yarn Ultisol has a very special ingredient. It went on a long journey across the pond to arrive stateside, with 50 pounds of it showing up in two very large bags at my doorstep.

That ingredient is Zwartbles sheep wool.

Zwartbles sheep are a European breed. They are not raised in North America, where Gothfarm Yarn is based. The wool in our yarn was imported from a supplier in the Netherlands. The name Zwartbles is Dutch for “black with a blaze” – which is a nice, concise description of the sheep breed.

The name is pronounced “Z-vart-bles.” A Dutch woman was kind enough to politely correct me when I was calling it “Z-wart-bulls.” I have a friend who just calls it the “Z sheep” to be on the safe side!

Zwartbles wool is naturally black, but the sun easily bleaches the tips. This gives the black wool a red undertone, with overall color coming pretty close to dark chocolate. In our yarn Ultisol, we blend the Zwartbles wool with fiber from Cinnamon Red Huacaya alpaca. The result is a dynamic dark brown yarn with auburn highlights. The yarn is named after a rich red soil type.

Ultisol has a medium-soft, springy feel, making it great for all sorts of outerwear. (Check out the Bearclaw beanie – a pattern designed especially with Ultisol in mind – in picture five.)

The yarn is 2-ply and worsted weight, and due to differences in the staple length in the sheep wool and alpaca fleece, has a more rustic appearance. It can pass for handspun even though it is 100% mill spun. And if you’re into handspinning, make sure to check out our Ultisol roving. It’s the same fiber, just unspun.

Zwartbles wool is not very common in commercial yarn. The reason for that includes color, availability, and the market dominance of Merino. We love being able to highlight – and enhance – wool from a distinct, international sheep breed.

There’s a whole wide world of fiber out there. Our yarns offer a way to explore it.

Whether it’s your first rodeo (for a top-down yoked sweater) or not, this quick knit is a terrific way to let a variegated colorway shine. The spiraling zigzag pattern uses only one strand of yarn on any given round—no stranding—and is worked by simply slipping a stitch here and there. The not-too-cropped bodice is in relaxing stockinette stitch (no purling!) and is easily lengthened if you prefer. Plus, the yoke pattern is both charted and written out line by line, so you’ve got this!

The pattern is on sale at a 30% discount through Saturday, Sept. 4th — use the code lionsandtigersandbears on either Ravelry or Payhip.

What comes to mind when you think of the color red? A stoplight? A fire truck?

In environments built by humans, red is often synonymous with urgency and attention. But natural reds from wool and fleece have a different effect. They’re less attention-grabbing fire alarm and more cozy fireside.

The comforting color mirrors the very warmth the fiber provides.

At Gothfarm Yarn, we’re currently well stocked with natural red yarns. The hue varies from deep and saturated to barely blushing. It comes from the amount of natural red fiber in each yarn blend – no dyes or synthetic fibers required.

Three of our yarns get their red color from cinnamon red Huacaya alpaca fleece. In our deepest reds, Ultisol and Aswan, it makes up about half their fiber. In our lighter hue Arkose, it’s just a touch.

Our yarn Alabaster is alpaca free. This yarn primarily owes its light red hue to wool from the aptly named California Red Sheep. This sheep breed’s fleece is interspersed with brick red hair. We added a touch of red mohair to help bring out the red a bit more. The result is a warm, tweedy yarn reminiscent of the stone for which the yarn named.

All together, our yarns offer a warm and relaxing take on red. It’s all thanks to the array of fauna that grow the natural, undyed fiber used in all of our yarns.

Southern Skeins is pleased to announce a collaboration with designer Johanna Underwood.

The Taste of Home Hat pattern is inspired by a line in a children’s book where a mother is speaking to her child, this pie crust weave brings to mind memories of fall and holidays spent with family.

Johanna learned to crochet at an early age from her grandmother, and grew up surrounded by beautiful handmade crafts. Years later she taught herself to knit while working overnight shifts as a counselor at a group home for teenage girls. Neither craft was “love at first sight”, but with practice, patience, and persistence she discovered her creative passion. Anyone who knows her can attest to rarely seeing her without knitting or crochet in her hands (or at least in her purse).

After the birth of her son in late 2020, she began designing her own pieces and decided to share her simple, cozy designs with the world. Johanna lives in central North Carolina with her husband, son, and two black cats.

You can use one of my sock sets or a single skein of Southern Sock. You can also subscribe to the Sock Yarn Box or make a one-time purchase to get a surprise skein.

I had the pleasure to call San Angelo, Texas my home for about a year. This small Texas city is steeped in rich history and a surprising art scene. While living there, I fell in love with mesquite artwork inlaid with turquoise. There is something magical about this combination.

This fun triangular shawl is worked from the center out featuring short rows, wrapped stitches, and a fun mosaic colorwork motif.

Use coupon code MESQUITE to get 10% off this pattern until midnight on August 16th.

Be sure to check out the Ravelry project pages — my testers made absolutely breathtaking versions of this shawl!
