The Shades of Spring

While spring has not arrived in many parts of the country (please stay safe if you’re getting tons of snow!), we know that the delights of the season have been on the hearts and minds of many. We just couldn’t resist getting our hands in the dye pots to create some spring inspiration to warm your hearts and projects!

We’re kicking off this week with a delightful set of Many Minis of Spring. These not-quite-pastels are semisolids with our signature tone-on-tone, hi-def speckles for added interest. Whimsical names like Bunny, Chickie, and Tulip will make you hop with joy (see what we did there?) as you stitch them into your spring-themed projects. Perfect for pops of color in socks, cheerful hexies for your annual project with us and more, these sets will delight. Salutations!

It’s been a while and a busy February. With March upon us, alongside the wonderful hints of spring, I wanted to sprinkle a little joy into this budding month!

This new pattern celebrates the intertwined and changing nature of craft and industry in history. It features garter stitch with a stranded intarsia interlocking cable. Unravel & Entwine is a two-size shawl that can be knit up with 120g of 4ply for a shawlette or 250g for the big squishy shawl of your dreams. It’s now available via our Payhip and Ravelry shop. If you’re more of a DK fan, you can switch things up and break out the DK yarns for it too!

We’ve also got a fantastic shop update for you this Friday, 3rd March, featuring mini sets like Beachcombing (inspired by shell collecting FOMO), Enchanting as the Sunset and more. There’s also an update to our Loading Bar collection of colourways with Stray and the Last Campfire, inspired by two wonderful adventure/puzzle exploration games. All of our Loading bars will be getting the update, though a couple are taking a little longer to load. 😉 The Loading Bar collection is inspired by video games and with this new update they are perfect for your assigned/planned pooling projects.

Who’s ready for March’s Travel the World colorway reveal? We’re going to TOKYO!!!

This month’s collection is extra special to me. For as long as I can remember, Tokyo has been my #1 bucket list place in the entire world to visit.

That dream came true in March 2017 when I spent several days there (by myself!) traveling around and seeing the city. It was the most incredible experience. I ate at the local markets. I visited the temples. I went one night to the Robot Restaurant (Google it, trust me). I wandered down alleys. I met people. I just let myself get lost in the city. On my last day there, I managed to talk my way into a private studio for a tattoo by this amazing woman who spoke no english, but completely understood what I was looking for. And on my last night, I sat at the bar overlooking the city and cried. I cried because it was everything I had hoped for, and I cried because I just didn’t want to leave. Tokyo completely stole my heart, and I cannot wait for the day when I get to go back.

Yarncentrick is Back for Year Two!

Yarncentrick is back for its second year on Friday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Frederick, Maryland. May weather in Maryland is notoriously wet so we’ve moved the location to Frederick in an indoor space. More than 30 indie dyers, bag makers and creatives, including several Indie Untangled online marketplace and show vendors that you may already be familiar with, will come together in a fully accessible space with plenty of paved parking. The event is being organized by Mary of 29 Bridges Studio and Valerie, also known as the Knitting Fairy Godmother. Tickets range in price from $5-$20 and are timed to avoid overcrowding. Cable locks are back!

Every few months, I ask the members of our Knit Club what knitting things they are dreaming of.

I do this because honestly, ya’ll are much smarter than I am. And I can’t tell you how often someone will ask for something and I will start using it and say, “Where has this been all my life?!”

This was absolutely the case for our Cable Locks.

One of our wonderful Knit Club members asked for point protectors that would ACTUALLY stay on the needles and do their job of keeping the stitches safe.

At the time I thought, “I don’t even use point protectors. Why not just pull your needles through to the cords and call it good?”

But I know that everyone knits differently and I always want to be able to provide tools that make EVERYONE’s knitting life easier. So, I started doing some experimenting and testing and released two new point protector options: Tip Ties and Cable Locks.

I patted myself on the back and thought, “Those are wonderful. They’ll be exactly what she needs.” Then I went about my business and never added them to my own knitting bag.

After all, I don’t use point protectors…

That is, I didn’t use point protectors until I cast on a shawl at Christmas time…

I knew this shawl was going to get bigger and bigger, so I planned ahead and used one of my longer circular needles. But this meant that I had a LOT of extra cord hanging around, and as I knit those long rows, those hundreds of stitches would relax themselves all down the cord.

I found myself CONSTANTLY having to scrunch them back up together, close to my left needle tip so that they were ready to be knitted.

I guess maybe I was a little rough about it because I began to notice that my yarn was catching just a touch on the join between the cord and the needle tip. No problem, I shoved the cord back in a little tighter and carried on.

But it kept happening (which was REALLY annoying) and in my irritation at having to scrunch the stitches again, I realized that each time I scrunched those stitches back up towards my needle, I was unconsciously yanking on the cord as I squished them up. That little yank was pulling the cord out of the tip just a tiny little bit causing a little drag on the stitches, and honestly, probably ruining my circular needle. ????

That’s when I decided I needed a cable lock on my needle.

Not to keep the stitches on the needle (I had plenty of extra cord), but to help me keep them all so close to my needle so I could stop yanking on it. ????

But of course, these little guys don’t just keep stitches close to the needle.

If you put one at each end, they also keep stitches from accidentally sliding off while sitting in your knitting bag.

Or, even act as stops if you need to steal the needle tips for another project.

We adore playing with color and some colors just draw us in and make us want to include them in every project. Our newest colorway to be added to the shop is Horse & Buggy and is just one such colorway! This beauty is a light lavender, almost periwinkle, tonal with a few speckles thrown in just to show off. Pendle Chunky update live on the website

Our latest update is now live on the website and it is Pendle Chunky, our buttery-soft Superwash extrafine Merino. It is perfect for winter accessories as well as lovely cosy jumpers/cardigans. Have you seen the stunning Patchwork Jacket by Claire Montgomery in this month’s issue of Inside Crochet? The image shown is used courtesy of Inside Crochet, with photography by Mavric Photography. This design uses simple granny square motifs to evoke patchwork quilts. The pattern uses our Milburn DK (Superwash BFL/silk) in 10 colours but could also be a good way to use up stash. Obviously (!) we have yarn packs for the design on the website. The listing includes the sizing information for the pattern and each size option includes the right quantities of yarn for each size. Inside Crochet is available in many stores in the UK as well as being available online.

We may be a bit quiet over the next week as we prepare for Yorkshire Yarn Fest on 4th and 5th March 2023 at Sandburn Hall, Flaxton, York in the UK. You can find information on their website, buy tickets and find out about the workshops taking place over the weekend. We are saving some of our planned updates for the show so if you are coming to see us you will get first dibs on fade sets of yarn (shown in the images), mini skeins and more!

Amici di Maglia in Italy have had a recent delivery of Milburn 4ply and Bowland 4ply so check out their website to get hold of these yarns. We are also about to send another shipment to them so keep an eye on their stock. They also have Oakworth 4ply, Pendle DK and Nateby 4ply in stock!! We have a list of all our stockists around the world on our website, you can find it in the footer menu at the bottom of the page.

We are continuing to see progress with shipping of some international orders from January following the Royal Mail cyber attack, below is a summary of the current status:
– International orders placed and shipped before 23rd December should have been delivered. Please contact us if they have not.
– International orders placed over the festive break are in the system and starting to be processed and have mostly been delivered. Please contact us if they have not.
– EU orders placed since 12th January have been shipped and should be moving through the system.
– International orders (NON EU) shipped between 12th January and 31st January are starting to be acknowledged and make progress but the newest are moving first. A complaint has been raised with Royal Mail about this. We have contacted the affected customers, please let us know if you have not heard from us.
– International orders shipped after 31st January *should* be almost back to a normal service but a little slower.

The SpaceMonster Club is all about the connection between makers

We had a little hiccup this past season in the SpaceMonster Club. The maker I had lined up for our end-of-season gift had a family emergency which meant she wasn’t able to complete the commission. It put us in a pickle, to say the least, and I found myself scrambling to find a replacement.

So I turned an old friend in the industry: a fabulous potter whose hand-thrown mugs are incredibly popular but, even better, who I knew would come through for us. We’ve done many yarn shows alongside her, sharing tools during booth set-ups and dinner after a long show day. I reached out and she said yes immediately.

And when the gift arrived, it was better than I’d even hoped.

That’s the thing about hand-makers — about potters like her, dyers like us, and knitters and crocheters like you…

We know that what we make isn’t about the product we have in the end (I mean, how many times has someone looked at your project and told you, “Y’know, you could just buy a hat?”), it’s about the making.

And even more, when we make with materials that have also been hand-made, it’s about the connection from maker to maker… from potter to dyer… from dyer to knitter and crocheter…

And that is why we love dyeing for our club members most of all. Because nowhere is that connection stronger.

When we stand in front of the dye pots thinking of colour inspiration, we’re imagining what you’ll think as you open the box. When we commission the gift, we’re hoping you’ll love it. And when I write the dyer’s notes, I’m writing to you.

And that connection with our club members? Well, I think it’s pretty special.

We’re getting ready for the next season of the SpaceMonsters Club and we’d love to have you join us! But we don’t have long — the next parcel is due to go out at the end of this month — so if you’d like to join our colour adventure, you’ll need to act quickly.

The SpaceMonster Club will be open for new members for only a few days, so that we can get started packing the next colourway!

I’m excited for the new colours we’ve come up with for the next season. Will you join us?
